I guess the guys in the 70s were right — if the days were shortened they should be that much colder, comparatively. In 60 secs. The Earth’s own activities changed things on a much bigger scale than man has ever done.

These types of articles are always silly to me. The Earth is on whole slowing down its rotation, but regularly experiences short increases in rotational rate. Except for frictional loss, the angular momentum of the entire Earth system is constant. But the solid Earth, atmosphere, and oceans exchange angular momentum due to heating and weather.
If you want to see how the Earth has been slowing down, go to:
http://maia.usno.navy.mil/search/search.html
select any period for the last 40 years, and select “Bull. A LOD (msec of time per day) “ and you will get a list of millisec changes in the length of the day for each day in your selcted time.
Or you could just go have a cold beer. :)
PS - So far the sight does not show the reported day shortening for the Earthquake. Thats not to say it hasn’t been posted yet.
