Walmart Greeter
email

Posted on 03/13/2010 8:29:51 PM PST by BulletBobCo

Charley, a new retiree greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem to get to work on time.

Every day he was 5, 10, 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, clean-shaven,

sharp minded and a real credit to the company and obviously demonstrating their

"Older Person Friendly" policies.

One day the boss called him into the office for a talk. "Charley, I have to tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang up job, but your being late so often is quite bothersome."

"Yes, I know boss, and I am working on it."

''Well good, you are a team player. That's what I like to hear. It's odd though you're coming in late. I know you're retired from the Armed Forces. What did they say if you came in late there?"

"They said, 'Good morning General, can I get you coffee, sir?'''

I tried to laugh, but the thought of a retired U.S. military general working at China Mart made it a bad joke.

A Captain was new to his position as commanding officer and wanted to seem important. When a private showed up at his office he pretended to be on the phone and motioned for the private to not interrupt. He said, “Thank you General. Will there be anything else?” into the phone. When he hung up he asked the private what he needed.

The private said, “Sir, I’m here to hook up your phone.”

...a retired U.S. military general working at China Mart...

True story.

Not long after I retired, I decided that my ret'd pay wouldn't keep me in the type of toys that I felt I needed at the time...so, I went looking for a part-time job.

I offered myself to the local Wal-mart, with every intention of standing in the doorway and greeting the shoppers...with a hearty hello and whatever else they wanted me to say.

I filled out the p/w and went home to await a response.

I got a response.

The manager made a personal visit to my home, to convince me I was over-qualified for the position of greeter, and was I sure I didn't want to submit a full resume to Corporate for a management position?

I politely declined that offer and pointedly asked if I would be considered for the Greeter position.

I was told that Wal-mart, as a corporation, did not feel that a retired US Army Sergeant Major would be happy working 18-22 hours per week as a door greeter for (whatever the minimum wage was at the time), and if I truly wanted to be employed by Wal-mart, I'd have to start at the top.

It was ludicrous to say the least.

This was almost 20 years ago and my retired pay was not really that much, at least not for a 20 year retiree.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 20K annual.

My wife worked, but she wouldn't allow me to raid her checkbook for my toys.

Anyway, I didn't pursue it further and later started my own company, which didn't require a lot of my time, yet provided a revenue stream for my toys.

To this day, I feel like Wal-mart lost the best damn door greeter they would ever have had.

It's just a damn good thing that I didn't need the job...I just wanted the job.
