TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The backlash against Arizona's tough new crackdown on illegal immigration is now beginning to affect enrollment at the University of Arizona. In a campus-wide e-mail sent out Thursday morning, university president Robert Shelton states, "The families of a number of out-of-state students (to date all of them honors students) have told us that they are changing their plans and will be sending their children to universities in other states."
Shelton goes on to express concern about the impact of SB 1070. He said the decision of students to withdraw "should sadden anyone who cares about attracting the best and brightest students to Arizona."

But at the same time, Shelton indicated the University does not plan to defy the law. He writes, "UAPD, which is one of the finest police operations anywhere, will be receiving extensive training on the specifications of the new law. I have total confidence that they will abide by the letter of the law, which includes a provision that individuals may not be stopped solely on the basis of race, color or national origin."

GOOD...
More slots for IN-STATE students, INCLUDING MINORITIES, that Arizona residents are already paying for...
Or, if they're not illegals, then they're so liberal that nobody will miss them. Win-win, regardless.
“On Wednesday Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik took a different stance toward the law. He held a press conference to tell the world what he had already revealed to KGUN9 News the day before, saying that while his department will continue to detain illegal immigrants for the Border Patrol, he has no intention of enforcing the provisions of SB 1070 making it a state crime to enter the country illegally.”
If Sheriff Dupnik is unable to carry out his constitutional oath of office he needs to be removed pronto.
Things haven’t changed much. U. of Arizona is strong in sciences. The social sciences are a joke, but the music department is pretty good.
I agree.
I bet this claim is as well-documented as all the “hate crimes” against all the dem pols of late...
(of course, I could have just waited to go to school because now Hussein wants to forgive all of those loans....}
This report is utter BS.
No way they have any meaningful data at this point in time. A couple of lefties called to complain. That’s all.
I think the sales and marketing term is "added bonus".
Those ‘students’ will be surprised when they find that other states are going to follow Governor Brewer.
Wow. I want my state to pass the law so all the liberal retards leave, too. Cool idea.
A little off-topic but look at the “most-commented” stories in today’s “Red Star” (http://azstarnet.com/)
I’m embarrassed by some of the schmucks we have here in the People’s Republic ... I can’t believe that first story, grrrrrrr.
* Tucson cop first to sue to block AZ immigration law (369)
* Dupnik declares immigration law an ‘embarrassment’ (365)
* Poor census responses could cost Arizona a 9th congressional seat (124)
* County’s early ballots show strong interest in Prop. 100 (80)
* Campus Correspondent: Some UA honors students leave citing SB1070 (75)
* Religious leaders call Ariz. immigration law immoral, unjust (65)
* Immigration law fosters division, triggers opportunities for harassment of all people (53)
* Immigration activists boycott Diamondbacks-Cubs game (48)
* TUSD: Students won’t be questioned about immigration status (42)
* Dupnik says he will enforce AZ immigration law if ‘forced’ to do so (42)
Hear, hear!!! More room for those students who perhaps may not have been able to get in due to “quotas”.

Thanks lulu16.
Oh yes, you’re right about that! In fact I have friends who actually moved from San Diego to accompany their son to the University of Arizona. Wow, was he disappointed, but he *is* an honor student.
That Tuscon cop has dual citizenship, right?
The leftie media are doing their jobs... presenting one side of the story: peddling influence.
this is ridiculous - what the hell is the census one about??? gimme a break...
here’s what i’ve been thinking about all day - these fools are going to try and create a referendum...from what i understand, if they wait until AFTER july to get the signatures necessary to put this bill to a vote by the people, we have to wait until nov 2012 to do that. (if i’m wrong, someone PLEASE feel free to correct me, because that sounds ludicrous)
so i say we beat them to the punch...get the 77k signatures we need by july to put it to a vote THIS november. that way they can’t tie it up until 2012 and the only way to overturn it is to put it on a ballot for another vote...
thoughts on this???
“Now, we need to focus on getting Meghan McCain to leave Arizona.”
LOL! Whoa, I need some sleep. I read that as: “Now, we need to focus on getting Meghan McCain to eat Arizona!”
