Times Square Bomb: U.S. Officials Finding Foreign Links to New York Bomb Plot
ABC News ^ | May 3, 2010 | RICHARD ESPOSITO, PIERRE THOMAS and BRIAN ROSS

Posted on 05/03/2010 1:26:24 PM PDT by faq

U.S. law enforcement officials say there is growing evidence the Times Square bomber had ties to radical elements overseas and did not act alone.

One senior official said the individuals involved "are living here and did not come from overseas to carry out the bombing."

Attorney General Eric Holder said today the investigators had made "substantial progress" in tracking the man who drove a Nissan Pathfinder into New York's Times Square with a crude bomb that failed to detonate.

Officials declined to provide the specifics that led them to believe there were overseas links to a larger plot.

...

"This is moving very fast because they left behind a treasure trove of evidence in the unexploded car," one US official told ABC News.

Officials told ABC News Senior Justice correspondent Pierre Thomas that the Connecticut owner of the vehicle told them he had sold the Nissan SUV last month in an unrecorded sale to an "Arabic or Latino looking man" in his 20's or 30's, for a few hundred dollars in cash.

The license plate on the car was apparently stolen from an auto repair shop outside Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to law enforcement officials.

The authorities told ABC News that the previous owner provided a description of the man who bought the car, and told investigators the vehicle was sold for several hundred dollars in cash, with no written records identifying the purchaser.

That's a BIG DUH!

All they have to do is LISTEN to their own people who are interviewing detainees: "In their dreams and fond imaginations, this is what will happen across all of the "Crusader nations" who are in Afghanistan. Pick a day, and everyone gives it their best shot. If just one-in-a-thousand of the Islamic people in our nations answer the call to Jihad, it will still be thousands of attackers ... Some will opt for a "John Mohamed/Malvo" whacking people from the trunks of cars. Others for a Virginia Tech lone gunman in the school. Others will attack school busses, nannies will kill the kids, clerks will kill customers, cooks (in the elementary school?) will poison the cool-aid. Etc, etc. "

This is from a paper written by Dave Grossman, Lt. Col. USA (ret)and posted HERE. I have also posted another article on the muslim threat HERE, that was written by the Pulaski County Missouri Sheriff regarding the training he is providing to his deputies to mitigate the threat of a Beslan, Russia type scenario.

People need to wake up to the external threats that have not gone away. The current regime in D.C. is a threat to be sure, but it is not the only threat. Our foreign enemies perceive WEAKNESS and will exploit the demonstrated weakness anyway they can. Unfortunately, thanks to the current regime in D.C., the war is coming to our home soil.

FREEDOM!

No, it's a death cult and subversive anti-American political movement....you know...The Enemy.

Like it or not, Islam is the second largest (in population) religion on the planet. I happen to completely despise Islam and all it stands for and, yes, I see the radical, violent elements of it as my enemy. However, it IS a religion and practice of it is protected by our First Amendment.

You see, unlike elements of both the Left and Right, which want to trash the parts of our Constitution that don't suit their, albeit, different purposes, I'm a true Constitutional conservative. I believe in preserving, protecting, and defending 100% of the Constitution.

There are many lawful ways to deal with the Islamist threat in our country without trashing the First Amendment. All your pretense that Islam is not a religion does neither you nor the conservative movement credit.

The source said forensic evidence uncovered in the vehicle led them to a Middle Eastern man’s name that was familiar to counter terrorism investigators.

Well now, isn't that special!

The incompetence of the Obama admin is on full display.

Thousands more must die before they come to realization that there are people that are intent on our destruction. In their eyes the problem with 911 was that it was a Republican President that was in command so therefore it doesn’t count in their agenda. Shameful and disgraceful.

You were saying ...

However, it IS a religion and practice of it is protected by our First Amendment.

And that's what needs to change for Islam. as it's specifically designed to install a violent and oppressive government to overthrow that very document which you say protects it right now ... :-)

“South East Asian”????

In the UK they call Pakistanis “Asians”, don’t know if they call Hindus the same. Certainly stupid to lump them together.

South East Asian to means Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Laotian. Maybe Filipino too. But NOT Pakistani!

So what would the lawful ways include? I used to agree with you but now I would exclude Muslims from joining the military, the FBI, the CIA and perhaps other agencies/etc as well. They cover, aid and abet for their terrorist buddies.

According to Bluebook, a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder, 100k miles, standard package, FAIR condition has a trade in value of $800.

Interesting. You will not find a drivable 1993 Nissan Pathfinder here in central FL for that low a price.

"Lawful ways" means dealing with people based on their actions, not on what place of worship they happen to attend. For example, it is possible right now under current law to exclude people from joining the military and agencies you cite based on security background checks. We could demand strengthening of background checks, and perhaps require them for more job categories than presently.

Radical Islamists are the enemy, but not all Muslims are radical Islamists. Just as in WWII, Germany, Japan and Italy were the enemy, but not all Germans, Japanese and Italians were disloyal to the United States.

I don’t understand still calling this a “bomb.” This was something that was supposed to look like a bomb. After all the mythbusters crew had to heat the propane tank for some minutes over an extremely powerful gas burner to get it to explode...

I won't pretend to know much about Islam. Not interested in it. However, you cannot change the First Amendment protections for practitioners of any religion. There are better ways to deal with the radical Islamists among us than to trash the Constitution.

For example, although I'm very wary of sedition laws and the misuse to which they could be put in the wrong hands, I would like to see the legal concept of sedition revived. If we had good sedition laws, people who misuse their positions as clergy to preach jihad could be charged with a crime. To repeat, this is just an example. There are many laws already on the books that provide law enforcement with tools to contain the seditious among us.

From what I have read on some other FReeper posts, this is a typical design that has been used many times before by Islamic terrorists, so whatever you want to call it -- it does go "boom" when it works right ... :-)

And I don't mind you calling it something else, other than a "bomb" -- as long as it gets the idea across to people that it does go "boom" and it does kill people and it does blow up things....

It is a mistake that many people make in thinking that this is a problem with "radical Islamists" -- instead of the very foundation of Islam, itself, as that governmental idealogy that is supposed to violently overthrow governments, kill people and wage incessant war until all oppposition is violently oppressed and stays oppressed under their "government" (and it is a "government" that they're talking about).

So, you're talking about a governmental idealogy designed to violently overthrow other governments, no matter what it takes and more specifically "by the sword" (as they put it) and killing and oppression is nothing to them (i.e., "that idealogy") in order to accomplish the installation of this government and eliminate all other governments.

The funny thing about all this is that they make no bones about saying all this very explicitly -- and yet -- so many people have a hard time believing it...

It's not "radical Islamists" who are the problem -- and as you put it, there are so many of them, you can keep "killing them off" one right after the other, with "other ways of dealing with it" -- and they'll have babies faster than you can "legitimately kill them" ... :-)

So, you will get nowhere that way ... you can't kill them fast enough (those "radical ones" doncha know) to make any difference. It's the fascist and oppressive government idealogy that you have to deal with if you want to save this country.
