Times Square Bomb: U.S. Officials Finding Foreign Links to New York Bomb Plot
ABC News ^ | May 3, 2010 | RICHARD ESPOSITO, PIERRE THOMAS and BRIAN ROSS

U.S. law enforcement officials say there is growing evidence the Times Square bomber had ties to radical elements overseas and did not act alone.

One senior official said the individuals involved "are living here and did not come from overseas to carry out the bombing."

Attorney General Eric Holder said today the investigators had made "substantial progress" in tracking the man who drove a Nissan Pathfinder into New York's Times Square with a crude bomb that failed to detonate.

Officials declined to provide the specifics that led them to believe there were overseas links to a larger plot.

...

"This is moving very fast because they left behind a treasure trove of evidence in the unexploded car," one US official told ABC News.

Officials told ABC News Senior Justice correspondent Pierre Thomas that the Connecticut owner of the vehicle told them he had sold the Nissan SUV last month in an unrecorded sale to an "Arabic or Latino looking man" in his 20's or 30's, for a few hundred dollars in cash.

The license plate on the car was apparently stolen from an auto repair shop outside Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to law enforcement officials.

The authorities told ABC News that the previous owner provided a description of the man who bought the car, and told investigators the vehicle was sold for several hundred dollars in cash, with no written records identifying the purchaser.

That is truly disgusting, Mike. An opponent of the health care bill? What city are you the mayor of, anyway? This is the most disgusting statement you have ever made.

However, it IS a religion and practice of it is protected by our First Amendment. You see, unlike elements of both the Left and Right, which want to trash the parts of our Constitution that don't suit their, albeit, different purposes, I'm a true Constitutional conservative. I believe in preserving, protecting, and defending 100% of the Constitution.

Right, so according to you, all religions, even if they include murder and human sacrifice should be allowed to flourish unfettered by government interference in the US.

There are lawyers who say you are wrong. Once the purpose becomes political violence, it is no longer freedom of religion.

"Lawful ways" means dealing with people based on their actions, not on what place of worship they happen to attend.

The mosques are where all the hate speech and violence are initiated.

Radical Islamists are the enemy, but not all Muslims are radical Islamists.

They are if their "cleric" tells them to be.

Japan and Italy were the enemy, but not all Germans, Japanese and Italians were disloyal to the United States.

Not all Germans were Nazis, not all Japanese were loyal to the Emperor.

But regardless of color or race, all muslims are muslims.

Problems with your plan are that plenty of Moslems haven’t done anything violent or harmful that would get them on lists or whatever, but they have plans.

IMO all radical mosques or Islamic schools that teach any kind of jihad whatsoever should be shuttered immediately and their staff deported. If US citizens, they can choose to go back to their country of origin or have their right to free speech curtailed. No one has a right to promote jihad against the US in the US. All Muslim conversion in US prisons should be either stopped or monitored.

When Muslims who just happen to like jihad even if they haven’t done it yet (ie lots of them) are in alphabet agencies vetting fellow Muslims, this is not going to work. When CAIR and other jihad loving Muslim organizations influence government decisions it is a very bad thing.

Your comparison of Japanese and Germans in WW2 is not apt. Islam is a set of beliefs and belief inspired action, people can convert. Japanese and German nationality cannot be compared.

Next week she’ll be wiping oil off of birds in a photo op. I have never felt so scared about national security since my first air raid drill in the classroom in 1957.

I remember hearing that terrorists in Iraq used propane tank bombs. But, what they at least sometimes do is drain the tank of fuel and pack it with explosives.

Look at the caption in this piece. Janet Puppetano says it’s a “one-off.” Going all British on us to make her point in style. They are all treasonous scum, the lowest riffraff of the earth.

Must be that “white male” they keep talking about (for no reason)

No kidding! How come it's okay to "profile" if it's a white man?

I didn't say that, and you know it. I'm going to assume you're way smarter than your over-the-top response to me would indicate. You know what I've been getting at, so think through ways that we can deal with the Islamists without trashing our Constitution in the process.

If I just pulled up in a car full of explosives and lit the fuse I sure as hell wouldn’t get out of it and change my shirt right there next to it . I didn’t believe the guy in the video was him right away.

There are lawyers who say you are wrong. Once the purpose becomes political violence, it is no longer freedom of religion.

And this I agree with completely. Same principle as "you can't cry fire in a crowded theater," unless there really is a fire, of course.

However, there is a world of difference between dealing with attempts by individuals to incite violence from within mosques, and attempts to declare that Islam is not a religion. That some FReepers refuse -- and that's what it is, refusal, not lack of comprehension -- to acknowledge the difference is antithetical to conservatism.

We conservatives must never give in to one of the worst impulses of the Left, which is that they cherry pick aspects of the Constitution that suit their purposes, and denigrate others.

Islam IS a religion. Deal with it. Those who practice it peacefully do enjoy full protections under our First Amendment. Those who do not practice it peacefully should be prosecuted under laws that exist to deal with such criminal acts.

They always said the war in Iraq was the ultimate recruiting tool for Al-Queda.

The ultimate recruitment tool would be a picture of Times Square in flames.

Then any indoctrinated Muslim would love to be that guy who blew up an American landmark.
