Petraeus to Modify Afghanistan Rules of Engagement, Source Says

Published June 25, 2010

| FOXNews.com

June 16: U.S. Central Commander Gen. David Petraeus testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, before the Senate Armed Services Committee. (AP)

A military source close to Gen. David Petraeus told Fox News that one of the first things the general will do when he takes over in Afghanistan is to modify the rules of engagement to make it easier for U.S. troops to engage in combat with the enemy, though a Petraeus spokesman pushed back on the claim.

Troops on the ground and some military commanders have said the strict rules -- aimed at preventing civilian casualties -- have effectively forced the troops to fight with one hand tied behind their backs.

The military source who has talked with Petraeus said the general will make those changes. Other sources were not so sure, but said they wouldn't be surprised to see that happen once Petraeus takes command.

Current ROE are ridiculous.......

What has happened to us as a nation since WWII? We no longer fight to pacify the enemy, we don't even fight to win, but rather we bend over backwards to win their 'hearts & minds'!! IMHO that is a losing strategy and nothing more than a death wish on our part.

So killing the enemy will now be authorized?

Woah! Not so fast. The first change needs to be letting them put ammunition in their weapons. ;-)

I don’t believe it. I would be greatly surprized if meaningful changes are made to the ROE.

However, IF it is true....it would be great.

If this is true and he loosened the ROE to allow the military to shoot back he’ll improve morale in the theater by quite a bit. You can’t fight a way if you can’t shoot back for fear of hurting someone.

It means that this was the price of admission for Obama to get Petraeus.

Even worse, we're trying to win hearts and minds that CANNOT be won. Islam simply is not compatible with western ideals and values, and it never will be.

Interesting since as McChrystal’s immediate boss, he could have changed them on his own any time before now...

“No point in wasting lives or dollars with our current ROE.”

Absolutely! If we are going to fight, then fight. If not we might as well come home and drink a cold beer on the porch.

If the Russians, with their brutal tactics couldn’t beat the jihadists, what chance do we have with our current ROE’s?

I heard someone recently calling our soldiers “IED Magnets”.

With our current ROE that about sums it up.

The American public loves its military

They now know what the military thinks of Obama and his cohorts

The administration is scared crapless

Petraeus has them by the shorts and he knows it and they know it

Ironic how the dems are hoping the general they slandered etc etc can save their sorry butts
