Kinda sounds like a Romney-driven agenda.

It is. His minions control the RNC. They're bought and paid for.

Those who think the GOP leadership will cooperate in the closing of primaries are ignorant or delusional.

In Idaho, one of the most solidly conservative states, the Republican rank and file have been trying to close theirs for several years. 95% of the delegates to their state convention want them closed, and still the party leadership keeps blocking it by every means possible, including legal action.

Tell ‘em, Delphinium.

The only way a state can mandate open primaries is if the party is using the state voting apparatus to conduct the primary. If a party decides to conduct its own private primary for the purpose of selecting candidates, it can do whatever it wants. If I were running the GOP, in every state that mandates open primaries I’d say “no thanks” and would send out ballots via certified mail to party members, then have them tabulated by a private auditing firm.

The GOP has no control over closing primaries.
These are set by state laws.

Where did John McNasty miss the qualifications for the RINO primary?

Certainly, John M. misses the target when it comes to his consistency and voting record. On that McNasty is a plain loser.

I would like to go on record as saying "dear God, don't draw out the primary/nomination process!"

All it does is provide the MSM extra time to pick out each and every foible of our candidates and causes the electorate to suffer from election fatigue.

It only benefits the media choice anyways (Romney or Huckster)

Agreed—and until they make that basic change you know that it is Republicans from the mushy middle—who want the influence of a Democrat crossover vote—in charge.

The truth is, the GOP really does need to seriously overhaul their national nominating process.  This is as good a start as any, but remember the GOP is traditionally very slow to change and adapt, and tends to stick with conventional picks (party deans, last primary's runner up, a losing VP candidate, etc).

First, the GOP should close all their primaries so that only registered Republicans vote in them.  Open primaries are silly.  This is one change the national party should lean on the states to enact.

Second, the 'turn your brain off at the door' and doing the Iowa, New Hampshire dance is a relic from a past era and doesn't serve us well.  The GOP should look at each presidential election and see what states went GOP by the highest proportion.  Those states should get the early primaries, maybe group the states together.  Work through the state primaries that way, doing the states that the dems won by the biggest margins last.

I like seeing some activity when it comes to the GOP running its primaries.  Still, they are just too slow and too conventional to do any meaningful change.  At least someone at the national level recognizes doing things the same old way simply because that's the way it has been done isn't necessarily a good idea.

Actually it's the Republicans who want a closed primary in idaho who have taken legal action against the Republicans who want to keep it open.

Above and beyond that the problem could still be resolved if a majority of voters in Idaho had the will to change things.

The romney folks have been conniving behind the scenes for this for several months. An article from earlier this year March 13, 2010:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2449005/posts#comment or http://thephoenix.com/Boston/news/96976-new-and-improved-romney/

FTA the last page: “But he’s got all the machinery moving behind the scenes. For instance, though Kaufmann doesn’t acknowledge it, people familiar with the ongoing process say that he is acting as Romney’s point man to steer the RNC toward the same single-window primary schedule as existed in 2008. (A special GOP committee will present a plan for the 2012 primaries to the RNC this summer. The plan will maintain the four “pre-window” states, but some in the party are hoping to create some kind of staggered window to prevent a Super-Duper Tuesday scenario.)

And Romney has invested heavily in maintaining his national network, spending nearly $3 million last year out of his national Free and Strong America PAC and his five state-level PACs, which he set up as far back as 2004. Most of that has been spent to keep his core people and consultants on the payroll. Many others from the campaign have been “taken care of” with jobs working for supportive pols and business leaders, who function as “extensions of Romney Inc.,” as one Republican consultant puts it. “It’s easy to keep people around and interested if you’ve got money to spread around,” he adds.”

THE ARTICLE glibly explains that Romney has 6 PACS he’s using to keep hundreds on his payroll and he has legions of these staffers entrenched at the RNC. Plus every week there’s a hit at Palin by these Romney supporters in the media. This weakling is too insecure to run on his own ideas and record, he has to pay hacks to continue to attack Palin through the media. Romney through his sycophants have attacked Palin a hundred to one versus how often they’ve attacked obama. And think back over all the major issues Palin has confronted and fought Obama on, many times all alone. Where was Romney? Hiding in the tall grass.

We need to stop letting liberal states like NH pick our candidates.

Perhaps the states that gave the highest percentage to the GOP should have their primary first.

I agree that dragging it out should help the nominee go into the general with more momentum than if it were all over in March.

I like the idea as sewing up the nomination by the end of January is way too early. The voters need to hear and be able to check out the candidates for several months and then vote in primaries. The front runner in January or February will not always be the best person the party should have run for the November election. I know some will say a longer primary process will beat up the candidates and drain money from the contributors so we are weak by November. I still like a primary fight that show cases the candidate who has guts and can best tell the voters his or her issues and values.

I like your idea about the highest margin Republican states and as I read this thread I wondered what had happened to you.

Weird...and nice to read you!

I'm OK. Just taking a break.

You know, I love politics. I found FR 10 years ago - I grew up in a very political environment so FR is home to me, well, even with a dead notifier, LOL!

America will never forget that while Gov. Palin
helped the Tea Parties and fought ObamaCARE,
where was the perpetual soreloser Mitt Romney?

Why, Romney was backing Obama (again).

"Romney praises Obama
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney praised President Obama
at a GOP fundraising dinner Wednesday ..
"I also think it's important for us to nod to the president when he's right," Romney said....
Romney, who spoke at a dinner for the National Republican Senatorial Committee,
said he's pleased with the president's plans to "finish the job" in Iraq and Afghanistan
-- lines that drew applause from the partisan audience. He also applauded the president
for standing up to the auto industry.
"I hope he continues to be tough ....The former businessman even offered faint praise for
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, saying that after a series of initial missteps,
"I think he's finally getting close to the right answer."

I take comfort in knowing that GOD is fully in control of the process.

(Otherwise this piece of news would stress me out to no end...because it is probably just the first of a string of well-disguised efforts I expect which all have the goal of weakening and ultimately ousting out Palin at any cost, because she clearly already has a huge lead, and everyone knows it...and everyone in the establishment is scared...and they can put it however they want but they are going to try to bait us into believing she’s not viable...and subtly fish with the process to the very end...CAN YOU BELIEVE the nerve of people to publicly “encourage” her to become chair of the RNC?...as if she doesn’t have BIGGER and BETTER things to worry about?...as if she ALREADY isn’t RUNNING the Party even without the title in the first place?...I don’t trust the RNC...I don’t trust Fox News or anyone else either...I do not believe I am a conspiracy theorist for being extra weary...Thankfully, Palin knew from the get-go if she was going to do this thing, she’s not going to be able to count on her party...she is taking it straight to the grassroots, to the people...the primaries will be interesting...I pray for her everyday.)
