Ethanol Could Go on GOP Chopping Block
Michigan Capitol Confidential ^ | 11/11/2010 | Jarrett Skorup

When the Republican majority is seated in the House of Representatives this January, many have high expectations that they will cut government spending as many of the candidates promised on the campaign trail. But the tricky question now is: Where to cut?

Some energy and environmental experts say they should begin with energy subsidies; specifically for ethanol.

Ethanol is a biofuel made mostly from corn in North America and can be used as an additive to gasoline. In many states, there is a mandated 10% blend with gasoline; the idea being to lower the amount of oil needed.

But many experts say this doesn't work.

"Contrary to popular belief, ethanol fuel does little or nothing to increase our energy security or stabilize fuel prices," wrote Kenneth Green, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. "Instead, it will increase greenhouse gas emissions, local air pollutant emissions, fresh water scarcity, water pollution (both riparian and oceanic), land and ecosystem consumption, and food prices." ...

Lets not burn our food for fuel. Lets get the price of bacon down and lower fuel down with more mileage.

It’s all wimpy, time chewing talk.

Boob bait for Tea Partiers and Conservatives.

The recommendations are too little, too late. Moreover, the political class will make sure that nothing adequate to address our fiscal problems gets done.

Ethanol is scam to raise the price of corn by creating an artificial shortage so ADM can increase it’s profits.

Just another p.o.s. law that’s forced on us by our puppet masters that know better than us.

“.....plus it raises the price of hay for my horses.”

LOL, I was just thinking of posting that same statement when I came across your post, and read it.

Exactly. Prices keep rising because land useage is going to grow corn, and Alfalfa is getting more scarce, thus the prices are skyrocketing. At least that’s the way I see it.

Probably the single smartest move that could be made in the energy field is to kill ethanol subsidies. If it made sense it wouldn’t need a subsidy.

The only sensible thing to do is figure out how get energy from...KUDZU! It not only grows like mad, you cannot kill it. It rambles over hills, trees, mountains, whatever. Set up a processing plant and the stuff will grow right in the door and into the machinery. No fertilizer or cultivation required.

Ethanol has already destroyed (as in embrittled, causing chunks to break out) the fuel lines on my weed trimmer

Just had my snowblower in for repair. That Ethanol was a big part of my $163 repair bill!

Exactly. This scam exists because of the undue influence of the early nominating states. There is zero justification for ethanol. Grassley and others maintain their positions because of this wealth transfer/welfare scheme.

Time to dump this scam on the ash heap of shameful history. Grassley justified this to me once as a “popular program”. No kidding.

Disgusted Hawkeye.
