Media Lies About Sarah Palin Korea Comments (Global Hit on Palin)
Thursday, November 25, 2010 | Kristinn

Posted on 11/25/2010 8:41:56 AM PST by kristinn

A hit piece by a liberal blogger about a slip of the tongue by Sarah Palin regarding the crisis on the Korean peninsula has become an international news story that is being spun to impugn Palin's credibility as a potential presidential candidate.

Palin has been dishonestly quoted out of context in dozens of articles and broadcast reports as saying on the Glenn Beck radio show on Wednesday, "We gotta stand with our North Korean allies."

Here, in context, is what Palin actually said (transcription by Kristinn):

Glen Beck: "Sarah you said, you said in the last few days that you are considering a run for president. And uh, polls show that you would probably win the Republican nomination. How would you handle a situation like just developed in, in North Korea?"

Palin: "Well, North Korea, this is stemming from I think a greater problem when we're all sittin' around asking, "Oh no, what are we gonna do?" and we're not having a lot of faith that the White House is gonna come out with a strong enough policy to, um, sanction what it is that North Korea is gonna do. So this speaks to a bigger picture here that certainly scares me in terms our national security policies. But obviously, gotta stand with our North Korean allies. We're bound to by, by treaty."

Beck: "South Korea."

Palin: "We're also bound by, yeah, we're also bound by prudence to stand with our, our South Korean allies. Yes. And, uh, you know to remind North Korea, well, we're not gonna reward bad behavior and we're not gonna walk away. And we do need to press China to do more to increase the pressure on North Korea."

The smear started with liberal blogger Oliver Willis who posted an entry with the title, AUDIO: Sarah Palin: "We Gotta Stand With Our North Korean Allies. The blog post did not transcribe Palin's interview with Beck, it just had a snarky comment, "Genius. Absolute genius. When Glenn Beck is correcting you on foreign policy, well… genius."

Willis included the audio clip in his post which this transcription is based on. As can be seen, it was a simple slip of the tongue. But, because of how Willis disingenuously framed it, the slip has become "truth" to once again be used to smear Palin as ignorant of foreign affairs.

The hit piece was picked up by Mediaite, a site founded by former MSNBCer Dan Abrams, which titled their hit piece, Sarah Palin - North Korean Allies.

Mediaite also posted the audio clip. But even with the evidence that the comment was clearly a slip of the tongue, Mediaite smeared Palin as ignorant by quoting her out of context rather than publishing the entire exchange with Beck.

For good measure, Mediaite brought back a previous smear of Palin that claimed in 2008 when she was selected to be John McCain's running mate she did not know Korea was divided between North and South.

The Weekly Standard came to Palin's defense last night with a piece that chided her critics for the smear.

That did not stop the smear from going global, however. A Google News search shows nearly one hundred articles accusing Palin of not knowing that South Korea is our ally.

Wire services, broadcast networks and newspapers across America and the globe have gleefully picked up the smear.

The BBC piled on today with an article that said, "Her slip of the tongue over North Korea will provide more ammunition for critics who say she doesn't have sufficient knowledge or experience for high office."

The Times of India headlined their article, Sarah Palin's Latest Verbal Gaffe - North Korea an Ally.

It is a testament to Palin's global reach and influence that such a simple slip would garner worldwide headlines and be used by her enemies here and abroad to smear her.

However, the truth must be told and the media once more shamed for their duplicitious reporting.

And she would be granted access based on what?

Based on the fact that - unlike Democrats - Palin happens to be a true patriot.

When President Obama hosted five liberal bloggers for a brief roundtable discussion Wednesday, he took two questions from blogger and Media Matters employee Oliver Willis, who authors the eponymous OliverWillis.com

IMHO, here's the problem with Palin:

Over-exposure.

She is in the media more than ANY other potential candidate. And since she is SO popular, anything she says will be amplified. Yes, I heard the entire interview, and I understand it was a mere gaff which she did clear up.

But I am getting tired of seeing her on Beck, Hannity and the rest of the FNC team (Chris Wallace not withstanding). I understand she's got another book to sell, but she needs to keep her focus there. Her answer to the North Korea question was weak - at best.

sidenote: you can save all the accusations of me being a troll. She is CLEARLY the best candidate out there as of now, and I plan on giving her my full support(as of now - that could change is Bachmann runs). The fact that she *IS* the best on the GOP side is what concerns me about the GOP as a whole; as in - why no one else to call out the Groper-n-Chief (Bachmann being one of the few exceptions). But I digress.

She doesn't need to bone up on issues.

She doesn't need to brush up on foriegn policy.

But the MORE she is in the media asking questions that other potential candidates don't even have the guts to answer, the more mistakes she will make. That's just natural.

But she needs to understand that the media is NOT going to give her a break.

My suggestion for Sarah: Sell the book, then go on a world tour. London to visit Lady Thatcher, then Merkel in Germany, the Czech Republic, Israel, then close it out with a visit with the troops. During this trip, don't talk to media - just government leaders and photo ops.

When she gets back, drop the Fox News commentary contract since it'll be time to start fundrasing for 2012. She's a big girl now. It'll be time for her to start controling the media, instead of letting it control her.

getting off my soapbox now. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I know what an “incumbent” is, but what’s an “incumbant”?

Case closed.

I see that the supposed insult of the day for anyone who dares question Palin is 'elite'. I wonder how you define it? Does it mean educated? Successful? Or is it simply anyone who disagrees with you.

I've never disguised the fact that I do not consider palin qualified to be POTUS based 100% on her CV. Here she had the opportunity to show some FP chops and instead blew smoke. If that's all you expect from a potential contender for POTUS then I suggest that you raise the bar a bit or get used to breathing the smoke and calling it fresh air.

Are you a true patriot? I’ll assume that you are. See how far into the workings of the military or our FP that credential gets you.

You pollute every Palin thread with the same old BS. When people say elite to you it means that you remind them of the country club rinos who hate the Tea Party and Palin (i.e. like Rove). If your only choice was Palin or Obama, who would you vote for?

If we send it around the world, it just gives it more credence. What we should do is post the whole response at the places the libs post the slip of the tongue.

And hey, everyone knows it was a flub. It won’t be the last and we here at freeper do the same thing to the libs.

Maybe we should stop making fun of mistakes or just print the truth and let it go.

I used to giggle at GW’s, but I laugh because I know it was a mistake. I Didn’t laugh at the 57 state thing, or other TOTUS errors because they didn’t seem like mistakes, they seemed more like ignorance, and that was scary.

>> I read the transcript. It doesn’t seem to make much sense even without the slip.

>> Palin: “we do need to press China to do more to increase pressure on that arena. “

>> huh? If we can’t pressure NK directly then how will be able to pressure China to put pressure on them?

You must think that Bolton is also a moron.

Maybe she was thinking Obama is allied with most all our enemies. I could understand the gaff. I've heard two radio talk show hosts mess up the North" from "South" Korea and either the engineeer corrected or the next sentence he corrected himself.

It's too badpeople hate Palin so much. The woman has such a homeliness to her and she's just demonized, probably because people listen a lot more to the prince of this world than the King of Kings and she's a child of the most High God. Bound to hate her.

"..that is my MAIN “problem” with sarah...She does need to go to these places..a lot...Korea, japan, the Mideast, India, pakistan, etc etc."

No, she does NOT need to do any such thing. The US's problems these days are largely domestic, and Palin is best qualified to deal with those. It is long past time for the US to simply tell the rest of the world to **** off, and take care of our own problems for a while. The Europeans have been squealing for the opportunity to "be a global player". Let them.

That said, I would still trust Palin to get it right on foreign policy issues because she has shown a strong knack for choosing knowledgable subordinates for those areas where her personal expertise is not as strong.

A "big" part of Reagan's success was due to the fact that he knew how and when (and to whom) to delegate. Contrasted with Jimmy Carter, who micromanaged everything and got it all wrong.

This media attack is nothing new. “Republicans are dumb” has been the media mantra for as long as I can remember. The only sad thing is to see some on her own side attacking her. In my mind, the more the mainstream media attacks her, well, the more regular America likes her.

In her defense, in addition to signing hundreds of books, she was zipping through 7 radio interviews yesterday. I listened to them and she was talking as fast as she could. It was like, “okay, I’ve got 5 minutes before I go on Laura’s show.” All 7 of the talks show people were shooting questions at her just as fast. In all of that, she didn’t have any teleprompters, notes or pre-screened questions, and she only misspoke one time? Give me a break.
