Obama struggles to keep Dems from killing tax cuts

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama struggled Tuesday to prevent wholesale defections by fellow Democrats that could sink the tax deal he worked out with Republicans — angry opposition that could subject millions of Americans to a big holiday-season tax increase.

Many GOP lawmakers seemed ready to embrace the Obama-GOP compromise and declare victory. The question was whether enough Democrats would join them in support, especially in the House, where liberal resentment of the president's concessions on tax breaks for the wealthiest runs strong.

Obama went on national TV to give a ringing defense of his compromise, declaring it the necessary price for heading off a tax increase that neither taxpayers nor the weak economy could stand and for gaining more months of unemployment payments for millions of jobless workers.

The compromise plan would extend unemployment benefits for millions of people, and reduce Social Security payroll taxes for a year. Workers would pay a 4.2 percent tax rate instead of 6.2 percent.

Democratic leaders in the House criticized the tax plan, sometimes harshly, but stopped short of saying they would try to block it.

If the little commie piggies at the DUmpster, Kos, MoRons.org, the Huffy Post and other communist groups REALLY want a BIG government nanny state, why the hell don’t THEY volunteer to finance it. Their boy Daddy Soros can give them all the money they need. A communist government should not be financed by those Americans who do not believe in socialism, communism and Marxism. Let the liberal piggies do it!

I think we’re screwed no matter which way it goes...if they DO pass and Obozo signs, extending the Bush rates and the economy gets better, unemployment declines...all in time for 2012 and Obozo says it’s all his glory and gets re-elected.

OR

the whole plan goes dumpster and tax rates get jacked up and the economy tanks and we all are doomed...

LOSE-LOSE

” Let me see. He comes out and announces a compromise”

Isn’t that our goal his last two years? We are winning.

Have to disagree, friend.
Just as `Coolhand Luke’ never planned anything in his life, by his own admission, Barry ain’t `masterminding’ anything.
He’s got a major problem on his hands: mutiny by his crew. Why? `cause national politics and presidentin’ is harder than calling a community meeting to discuss rent controls or sitting on his butt in the senate, polishing his halo and playing critic ...
Pop some corn, sit back and enjoy the demo-debacle. Only 23 more months of this comedy show to go.

I asy kill it and get something in return this time not some stupid quid pro quo, like for like or even swap.

That ain’t negotiating, that’s splitting the difference, a tactic for lazy people.

For the 287,657th time:

THE DEMOCRAT PARTY WANTS TAX INCREASES, NOT "TAX CUTS."

Yeah, he might have made a few more friends if he hadn’t taken the opportunity to call the opposition party a bunch of “hostage takers”.

Idiot.

He never fails to display his arrogance and stupidity when off-prompter.

The strange thing is I saw the Keyes-Obama debates when Obama was running for the US Senate. Obama may be the only person to have ever beaten Keyes in a debate, albeit not on substance, but on style points. As in the Kennedy/Nixon debate, Obama was "cool" and Keyes was "hot."

Obama answered policy questions with non-answer truisms, but he did so by speaking slowly, in a low, soothing voice, which had a hypnotic effect on the studio audience.

He seems rattled these days. And I think people are beginning to "get" his schtick.

It's far far worse than that.

He just told the whole world that all they need to do to get us to buckle is take some hostages AND HURT THEM.

A clear message that I assure you is not lost on al qaeda.

That's a very interesting comment from someone who has made posts agreeing with much of what I stated. Makes me wonder whether you missed your meds again.

A good catch and very unfortunate for what is left of the free world.

Even though he can’t think without a teleprompter instructing him, Obamao has vaguely figured out that raising taxes will further screw up the economy and cost jobs, making 2012 a bigger nightmare for Democraps than it is already going to be.

Don’t agree with that at all.

I do think most of their anger is real. They were angry over not getting the public option even though the legislation they did sign would lead to that in a few years. They don’t see the long term potential.

It’a possible someone could have designed this to make him appear moderate I guess...but I don’t think the majority are in on it.

I personally hope they kill it. It would hurt if a rax hike went into effect but at some point you have to make a stand and now is the time. Let’s see what kind of deal the GOP could get out of the W.H. if they were trying to deny any concession.

The loser Daschle opposed tax cuts of any kind based on his stupid (and politically suicidal) comparison of someone at a very low level of income *only* saving a couple of hundred while someone making $250K would save thousands -- by doing so he merely pointed out the fact that he was *against* cutting income taxes for someone who clearly shouldn't be getting taxed on their tiny little income. Thanks NormsRevenge.

What tax cuts? I thought the argument was whether or not they were going to increase taxes.
