WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama struggled Tuesday to prevent wholesale defections by fellow Democrats that could sink the tax deal he worked out with Republicans — angry opposition that could subject millions of Americans to a big holiday-season tax increase.
Many GOP lawmakers seemed ready to embrace the Obama-GOP compromise and declare victory. The question was whether enough Democrats would join them in support, especially in the House, where liberal resentment of the president's concessions on tax breaks for the wealthiest runs strong.
Obama went on national TV to give a ringing defense of his compromise, declaring it the necessary price for heading off a tax increase that neither taxpayers nor the weak economy could stand and for gaining more months of unemployment payments for millions of jobless workers.
The compromise plan would extend unemployment benefits for millions of people, and reduce Social Security payroll taxes for a year. Workers would pay a 4.2 percent tax rate instead of 6.2 percent.
Democratic leaders in the House criticized the tax plan, sometimes harshly, but stopped short of saying they would try to block it.

If the dems kill this bill:
1) The American people will become furious when their paychecks get smaller and blame zer0 and the dems.
2) We can negotiate a MUCH better deal especially on the death tax.
3) Long term memory will help us iin 2010.
This is just the beginning of the benefits to having the dems kill this crummy compromise.
Make no mistake about it, the left is very, very, pleased with little Barry and is just making a lot of noise to dupe people the way they successfully duped into thinking that no one, not even Barry the Marxist, could be worse than the Bushhitler. Whoever put this plan into action has to be laughing their butt off at the comments here and elsewhere since with nothing other than a few lefty blog articles they’ve managed to distract everyone into watching the “democrat infighting”. Now that you’re all focused elsewhere, Barry will sneak a fast one into the Executive Order bin or introduce some regulation that will take the economy and your freedoms further down the toilet, all while the majority is gloating over not having their taxes increased. The democrat fascists knew they weren’t going to increase taxes day one of this little “debate”, they just wanted to put the blame on Barry rather than on Congress and they’ve done so very well so far. Hopefully, some democrat in Congress will kill this deal, at which time the blogs now whining about Barry will scream at those halting the deal for “distracting us from getting other things done before the Republicans take over”.

Don’t give Obama a two year extension, because he just wants a campaign issue in 2012...make tax changes that are permanent and demand a clean bill with NO Dream Act or unemployment insurance extensions.
I like this trade off......index the gas tax for inflation, but also index tax deductions for inflations and increase the standard deduction to $50k and index it for inflation, then let the Clinton tax code return and make it permanent. Lower the corporate income tax to 25% with no tax on dividends or interest, index cap gains for inflation at 20% rate, but zero percent held to retirement. Don’t tax income from overseas operations. Leave the Clinton code with three rates: 15%, 28%, 39.8%—but with the top one kicking in at $1 million income.
Promise to increase consumption taxes when the economy recovers....
