"If FR dies, thatís that." - Jim Robinson [Jim's reply at post # 588]

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

===

[To: paulycy]

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

Those who yell the loudest are those who are not secure in their own belief system and perceive the intellectual questioning as personal attacks. They are still looking for validation from other people instead of being secure in the salvation of Christ, who said there would be persecutions and tribulations as part of the cost of following Him.

VERY well said!

Checking signups is a must. Longevity can tell you a great deal about a poster. So can posting history. If someone posts 20 times in a year and then complains about the site, they haven’t a leg to stand on. They aren’t here. How would they know what’s “normal”? You’re a Freepaholic the same as most on this thread. Not everybody is. And not everybody has FR’s best interest at heart. Be skeptical now and then. It’s a must.

... JimRob's and his family's contribution to the United States of America has never been adequately recognized and probably never will be ...

Amen to that with the notation that FreeRepublic has great value to all of us! Why would Sarah Palin take the time to spend a moment of her time if he wasn't important to a lot of us!

Thanks again, Jim, John, and all the rest of the crew! Take time to smell the roses. They are flowing from your fans!

Statement by the founder of Free Republic
Free Republic ^ | Jim Robinson
Posted on March 22, 2004 9:22:17 PM EST by Jim Robinson

I posted the following statement to our front page in response to the criticism I'm receiving lately as to not being fair and balanced and perceived mistreatment of trolls and assorted malcontents. Got news for all, I'm NOT fair and balanced. I'm biased toward God, country, family, liberty and freedom and against liberalism, socialism, anarchism, wackoism, global balonyism and any other form of tyranny. Hope this helps.

Statement by the founder of Free Republic:

In our continuing fight for freedom, for America and our constitution and against totalitarianism, socialism, tyranny, terrorism, etc., Free Republic stands firmly on the side of right, i.e., the conservative side. Believing that the best defense is a strong offense, we (myself and those whom I'm trying to attract to FR) support the strategy of taking the fight to the enemy as opposed to allowing the enemy the luxury of conducting their attacks on us at home on their terms and on their schedule.

Therefore, we wholeheartedly support the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive strikes on known terrorist states and organizations that are believed to present a clear threat to our freedom or national security. We support our military, our troops and our Commander-in-Chief and we oppose turning control of our government back over to the liberals and socialists who favor appeasement, weakness, and subserviency. We do not believe in surrendering to the terrorists as France, Germany, Russia and Spain have done and as Kerry, Kennedy, Clinton and the Democrats, et al, are proposing.

As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and-pro America. We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc. We also oppose the United Nations or any other world government body that may attempt to impose its will or rule over our sovereign nation and sovereign people. We believe in defending our borders, our constitution and our national sovereignty.

Free Republic is private property. It is not a government project, nor is it funded by government or taxpayer money. We are not a publicly owned entity nor are we an IRS tax-free non-profit organization. We pay all applicable taxes on our income. We are not connected to or funded by any political party, news agency, or any other entity. We sell no merchandise, product or service, and we offer no subscriptions or paid memberships. We accept no paid advertising or promotions. We are funded solely by donations (non tax deductible gifts) from our readers and participants.

We aggressively defend our God-given and first amendment guaranteed rights to free speech, free press, free religion, and freedom of association, as well as our constitutional right to control the use and content of our own personal private property. Despite the wailing of the liberal trolls and other doom & gloom naysayers, we feel no compelling need to allow them a platform to promote their repugnant and obnoxious propaganda from our forum. Free Republic is not a liberal debating society. We are conservative activists dedicated to defending our rights, defending our constitution, defending our republic and defending our traditional American way of life.

Our God-given liberty and freedoms are not negotiable.

May God bless and protect our men and women in uniform fighting for our freedom and may God continue to bless America.

If we run ads we’re commercial. If we are commercial we run into more problems claiming fair use. We’d have to scrub our archives and really clamp down hard on our posters. I’d rather do with less income and retain more freedom.

That has my vote. However, if another FReeper/entity wanted to start a FOUNDATION site with products for sale (hats, shirts, books, whatever) that could in turn use its revenue to support other causes and sites, would that be do-able? Focus on the Family started a second group so that it could participate in politics (disastrously in some instances, so far, but give them time...) and avoid the tax implications of mixing politics with their essentially religious mission. Here we have another entity wishing to support non-commercial, free-speech, grassroots comment on politics without giving an entrée to legal sharks wanting to profit from fascist censors.

start a FOUNDATION site

That's a very interesting idea. A completely separate entity that can raise funds and donate to FR or anything else it chooses as it sees fit.

Very interesting.

Reading those posts, I got up and made myself a nice dish of red beans and rice, with a side of cornbread. Then I wiped up the bean dish with the last hunk of cornbread and ate every drop.

In your very first post on this thread, your first words were telling people “who you are”. I know who JimRob is. I know the traffic this site gets and the usual age of posters. Keep your bells and whistles. An activist site doesn’t need them.

Well, considering the fact that nobody designated you as the final arbiter of what an activist site needs, I think I will continue to ignore your immature comments and suggest that it may be people like you who drive others away.

It’s not the cost, it’s more about the time.

Jim and John, would you give some thought to the idea of experimenting with a couple of conservative college students as interns? Get them from likely places by advertising for any who live in SoCal but attend Hillsdale College, or are members of Leadership Institute or the like. Check 'em out and give them limited duties, even online instead of on site, to see if it works out. If it did work out, over the next few semesters you might be able to offer to be an official internship site and use grunt labor to tackle some drone tasks like system testing or your aforementioned archives scrubbing.

I dont like the gay thing at all... but it was the site owner's general attitude on the threads that kept me from donating $200. There are civil ways to go about "purging", and that was about as uncivil as they come.

Your comment reminds me of that tv ad where a guy at a business meeting starts making fun of the boss, and then realizes the boss is tuned in on the speaker phone.

Advertising and fund-raising are facts of life for anything other than blatantly commercial operations that cater to mass mediocrity.

Agreed, but the owner has expressed strong reservations about allowing any advertising on his site. See post #588.

For now, at least, the current business model of 100% donations will stand.

Well, it seems your presumption knows no bounds either. Nobody is suggesting a glitzy kiddy sight, only a highly functional and easy to use one. BTW, some folks will tell you that you'll have better success in life if you ask questions (especially when someone offers you his or her thoughts)rather than lecture people or put them down, but I won't do that since you seem to already know it all. Once again, good luck with that attitude and I wish JR good luck with the site.

Really?

POst 166 : FR needs a serious functional upgrade to include such standard features as post formatting, editing, object insertion, emoticons, etc

That is kiddie stuff. This is an adult forum. I don't need emoticons to tell people how I FEEEEEEL. I have words.

some folks will tell you that you'll have better success in life if you ask questions

I certainly didn't see you ask any. You told us how important you were and proceeded to tell us how lacking FR is.

OK, how about losing your fixation with emoticons (which greatly helped other forums) for a minute and think about ease of use functions for people who may have trouble typing or arthritis. It is called being considerate and thinking of your users. I can't believe you think ease of use won't sell. Finally, I am sure that members of another (adult touring biker) forum that does have all the features could easily demonstrate that they too have an adult forum. They also use other kiddie stuff with icons and ease of use features like iPads, iPhones, Androids, GPS, FLIR HUD devices, etc.

How old are you anyway?

Sorry, it was rude of me not to answer your question. I am staring 70 in the face.

making technology easy to use sells

ONLY if you need it or want it. All the things you mentioned are not needed on a grassroots activist site. Only the young believe that they can't live without it.

Good luck and I won’t bother you any more.

You have a lovely evening!

Well, I'm gonna get married to the Sheik of Araby tomorrow, so there....prove me wrong ;0)

I always get a kick out of the grandiose claims of anonymous FReepers...my claim is just as valid as any of the others now being made, even if there is a subsequent post of a link to a website that COULD possibly be theirs. That's the thing about the internet, donchaknow? Anybody can say anything.

I’m 60 and have no use for all that fancy stuff. I’m surprised that you think it’s essential.

Btw, by GPS you mean Global positioning? That would be a HUGE No-No on a political site. We get stalkers.

Excellent idea @1436 , E. Seriously.

And a great tax write off potential as well.

Does 0cents share any of the FR item revenues with FR?

Not really my business but while I might ask Alan to promote revenue for FR on Antimullah, I won’t for a commercial site.

Alan does not accept advertising, so nothing negative about creative 0cents - just propose breaking a rule for FR’s sake on a sporadic basis to try to help. May not provide results from the broad ranging readership from over 120 countries.

Jim doesn’t want ANYONE messing with FR’s servers. He owns them.
