Gang Rape Story Lacked Balance (says NYT public editor)
New York Times ^ | March 11, 2011 | ARTHUR S. BRISBANE

Posted on 03/12/2011 3:22:24 AM PST by reaganaut1

The story quickly climbed The Times’s “most emailed” list but not just because of the sensational facts of the crime involved. “Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town,” published on Tuesday, reported the gang rape by 18 boys and men of an 11-year-old girl in the East Texas town of Cleveland.

The viral distribution of the story was, at least in part, because of the intense outrage it inspired among readers who thought the piece pilloried the victim.

My assessment is that the outrage is understandable. The story dealt with a hideous crime but addressed concerns about the ruined lives of the perpetrators without acknowledging the obvious: concern for the victim.

While the story appeared to focus on the community’s reaction to the crime, it was not enough to simply report that the community is principally concerned about the boys and men involved – as this story seems to do. If indeed that is the only sentiment to be found in this community – and I find that very hard to believe – it becomes important to report on that as well by seeking out voices of professional authorities or dissenting community members who will at least address, and not ignore, the plight of the young girl involved.

Let’s consider the particulars:

The story by James C. McKinley Jr. reported that residents of the town noted the girl dressed “older than her age,” wore makeup and fashions “more appropriate to a woman in her 20s” and hung out with older boys at the playground.

The story also quoted one resident, saying, “Where was her mother? What was her mother thinking?”

Referring to some of the defendants in the case, the same resident was quoted saying, “These boys have to live with this the rest of their lives.”

At least they’ll live.

She will be doomed to a living death.

-Every- child molester/rapist “kills” their victim, even if they leave them breathing when they’re done.

I can see your point.

Does it seem to you, I know it does to me, that newspapers aren’t writing news articles in the straightforward, objective and informative manner which they used to do a couple decades ago?

Nowadays it seems a news report has to be ‘relevant’ and politically correct. Newspapers are trying to slant the whole situation rather that who, what, where and when. Just give us the facts and maybe add something extra to flesh it out. We’re not stupid but they sure treat readers that way.

why is it no one sees how morally bankrupt and socially outcast large enclaves of blacks become to the community?

Yet the government continues building free and reduced cost homes and housing units to make these enclaces larger.

“At least they’ll live.”

Uh, maybe not. Rape in Texas can be a capital crime. These guys could all be executed.

Obviously, the child rape was just another part of the
evil New York Times agendae.

As long as they are kept on urban reservations, nobody cares. As the economy continues deteriorating, they are more often leaving the reservations in war parties to attack the European and Asian settlers along the frontier (via carjackings, purse-snatching, home invasions).

The police don’t like the housing arrangements because they concentrate crime to such a degree they become ungovernable; in Newark (NJ) they’ve replaced the high-rise tenements with low-rises to dilute the crime. It doesn’t help much, but the cops don’t have to do so many stairs on the few occasions they do show up.

You’d think that world-prominent women’s organizations would be burning mad about such situations and use their bully pulpits to admonish the “men” to respect the women’s bodies and souls and keep themselves far from violating them. Wrongo. It’s not politically correct to have old fashioned morals any more. Sisters have sold other sisters out and it is so, so sad.

Still happens in MD.

If race isn’t mentioned in a crime report, we all know what to automatically assume.

It’s not racism; it’s just deductive reasoning based on [typical] historical precedence.

How long was “Chief Moose” looking for those “white guys in a white van” [undoubtedly all dressed in white, too] before somebody finally mentioned the “DC Snipers” *might* be black?

They still don’t classify that as an act of “terrorism”.

[two Muzzies on a serial killing spree...nope, nothing terrifying, there]

It’s possible, but nowhere near as common as it could be. In a society that knows less and less about souls, killing or maiming a human soul seems less important than doing it to a human body, or sometimes even to an animal.

Newspapers were told to squelch the truth because readers were realizing there was no hope for a segment of our population, and that segment was also starting to realize it as well (and behaving accordingly). They have to hold out hope that there is some place in our society for people with marginal math and English skills (at best), in which that person could raise a family and lead a productive life. It is obviously ridiculous, but how do you tell those people that? What else could be their reaction other than to live as Somali pirates on our urban reservations?

Yes, that is my point, but I also think they are committing some reverse psychology. I think they are actually promoting violence by their lopsided reporting. The only way the victims can find justice is through vigilante means.

As if they cared about women, ~really~.

They only care about psychologically castrating white men.

Even worse, to ask for tips without a real description, is just bizarre. That DC sniper case was frightening; when you’re told to “zigzag” when you walk (like trying to avoid a torpedo attack from an enmeny submarine), your government has just told you that you’re on your own. I’m surprised they even released the descriptions of those 2 perps, but the civilians who actually led to their arrests probably refused to be sworn to secrecy...

I say that this is what you get when, through the dummying down of public schools, the empowering of the NEA, the embracing of criminal culture, and the installation of sweeping transgenerational welfare and housing programs, you rob people of their basic pride and decency.

and the parents of these men/boys bear no responsibility for the upbringing of them. blame it all on the schools. The schools have them for 6 hours a day, 9 months a year for up to 13 years. Yeah blame them rather than the parents that actually gave birth to the little felons.

“they are more often leaving the reservations in war parties to attack the European and Asian settlers along the frontier (via carjackings, purse-snatching, home invasions).”

We welcome them here to Hillbilly Hell.

When the Beltway Snipers were on the loose, *every* hunter here was watching out for them.

They got “lucky” and were snagged by a TN trucker at a South Mountain rest, stop 30 miles east.

They were headed this way, alright, but really had no idea what they were headed *for*.

They ring them with Planned Parenthood instead, and are frustrated that it is taking so long. They accelearated that with welfare reform, and now the blacks are being displaced by Latinos; I guess the master plan is that when there are enough of them they close the spigot/seal the border (though they’re breeding enough on this side to make that irrelevant).
