Military pay would stop with a government shutdown
The Federal Computer Week ^ | Mar 14, 2011 | FCW staff

Posted on 03/14/2011 8:56:22 PM PDT by ScubieNuc

According to draft guidance circulating around the Defense Department, military personnel would be required to work without pay if the government shuts down, reports the Air Force Times.

That differs from the 1995 shutdown when U.S. troops reported to work and were paid, the article states. But the 13-page contingency plan, in which DOD highlighted which parts of the military would continue to operate if the government shuts down, states that this time the military would miss a payday if a shutdown continued through April 1.

PJ Crowley was a State Dept employee. I’ll ignore the Manning stuff other than to say that he is probably being treated just fine. I would not believe what the media and his lawyer say about it.

The military is always the first to forfit a COLA when the Civil Service still gets it, and any pay raises are always less than the Civil Service as well.
I do not trust this govt..the govt broke treaties with the Indians ( Native Americans as they are called nowadays) and they did with the military over health care until Col Day pressed the issuse and got it reinstated.

It is always screw the military, but suck up to us and tell us how great we are the rest of the time. Talk is cheap.

When I was serving in the 1980’s, when the congress and President Reagan were disagreeing about the budget, we were told that in the case of a government shutdown, we still had to report for duty and that we could still make purchases at the commissary and exchange and they would hold on to our personal checks, until our pay had caught up with us. For those living on the economy, letters were being prepared by the local commands, outlining what was happening and to try and work with military members until this situation was resolved.

I remember that one. The base Credit Union and local banks announced interest free loans to members who needed cash and the Red Cross did likewise.

The DAB was passed and we didn't have to use it but people were getting nervous.

I call BS on this. I think the left is taking something way out of proportion and attempting to intimidate the GOP Congress.

Let us all not forget that the Army/Air/Navy...etc. Times papers are a Gannett product.

I have no idea if this is a scare tactic or not, but I talked to a soldier a couple of hours ago and he said they were indeed told they would be expected to work without pay if something was not in place by Friday.

BS.

The Senate, The Congress and Immigrant would receive their checks.

The government was shut down before and the military got their pay but they are now in cahoots with Barry and will authorize the with holding?

I’m gonna go on vacation when they do...

Your link took me to a reply page to Mariner. ;o)

I would appreciate it if you would try again. It sounds like a very good link and something I would like to read.

“draft guidance”

Other posters made this point, but I want to underscore it.

It’s a draft...

They simply wont take order from the Golfer in Chief. My cousin serves in Sokor and 90% of everyone he serves with hates Odumbo’s guts.

That sounds about like the same percentage for those serving in Iraq.

I was all in favor of a shutdown if Obama didn’t return the 105 billion to defund Obamacare and agree to the cuts by the congress. But to see the military go without pay is making me rethink that.

Wouldn’t it be possible to just pay the military in a separate bill? I am sure that they can continue to do that.

Will the senate and congress and staffers all get their paychecks if there is a government shut down? I bet that they do

How come the military are among the FIRST to lose their pay?

Because their overseas votes are ignored

I think 0bambi is pushing his luck here.

Here is a pic I got using my forward time camera device....

It's from early next year.....

It’s probably time to add a verse to this, considering...

Tommy

By: Rudyard Kipling

I went into a public-’ouse to get a pint o’beer,
The publican ‘e up an’ sez, “We serve no red-coats here.”
The girls be’ind the bar they laughed an’ giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an’ to myself sez I:

O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;
But it’s ``Thank you, Mister Atkins,’’ when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it’s ``Thank you, Mr. Atkins,’’ when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but ‘adn’t none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-’alls,
But when it comes to fightin’, Lord! they’ll shove me in the stalls!

For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, wait outside”;
But it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide,
The troopship’s on the tide, my boys, the troopship’s on the tide,
O it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide.

Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.

Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy how’s yer soul?”
But it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll.

We aren’t no thin red ‘eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints:
Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;

While it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, fall be’ind,”
But it’s “Please to walk in front, sir,” when there’s trouble in the wind,
There’s trouble in the wind, my boys, there’s trouble in the wind,
O it’s “Please to walk in front, sir,” when there’s trouble in the wind.

You talk o’ better food for us, an’ schools, an’ fires an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.

For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Chuck him out, the brute!”
But it’s “Saviour of ‘is country,” when the guns begin to shoot;
An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;
But Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool - you bet that Tommy sees!

Here is a better article than the original article. The original article references this article. Gannett publication, so I’m not sure how trustworthy it is.

Politicians pay should stop with a government shutdown...they’d straighten up soon enough then.

Actually that is a short-sighted and actually damaging idea.

Many of the Socialists and Progressives in government are independently wealthy people like Pelosi and Reid who have seen massive increases in their personal net worth while "serving". They can easily withstand a few missing paycheques when compared to the new freshmen who are sleeping in their offices. All this does is cause the fiscally conservative new members to give in to anything to get paid. Linking their cashflow with the crafting of a budget is guaranteed to result in yet another hasty and wastefilled mess.

Once again, FReepers shooting their own.

No...not lies.

I am active duty...24 years Air Force. I serve as the superintendent for my unit (NCOIC)...and in that function...one of my additional duties is as the RA (Resource Adviser). That means I manage the money.

I have seen the guidance. It was like this during the last shutdown as well. You worked but didn't get paid. You get BACK paid...but if a pay-day (1st or 15th) occurs during the shutdown...you won't get that paycheck.

So...it isn't "B.S."...its true. It was true in '95 as well. If they do shut it down...and if the shut down lasts into April...I won't get a paycheck on the 1st...and neither will anyone else.
