Mitt’s backers: ‘RomneyCare’ overblown [DeMint defends Romney & his socialized medicine scheme]
The Hill ^ | March 17, 2011 | Michael O’Brien

Mitt Romney’s supporters on Capitol Hill are giving him political cover for the healthcare plan he signed into law as governor, even as his competitors for the GOP presidential nomination ramp up their attacks on “RomneyCare.”

Romney’s healthcare reform initiative in Massachusetts is viewed as one of his biggest political liabilities going into the Republican primary, due to its similarities to President Obama’s healthcare overhaul.

But leading conservatives, including supporters of Romney during his 2008 presidential run, argue that the Massachusetts plan isn’t a deal-breaker.

“One of the reasons I endorsed Romney [in 2008] is his attempts to make private health insurance available at affordable prices,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.), a GOP kingmaker.

So DeMint is really defending his 2008 endorsement.

Way to stand up for principles Jim, not.

“stay home”???

There are, you might be aware, OTHER elections happening that day.

No serious conservative would ever advocate NOT voting.

I never bought it. Nutritionally, you are what you eat. Politically, you are who you endorse. DeMint is a Romney Republican, no matter how much meaningless lip service he may pay to conservatism on any given day.

What’s that old saying? “Hypocrisy is the homage lies pay to the truth.” Or something like that. It’s all an act with these people.

As painful and heartbreaking as it might be for those pre-disposed to have a bleeding heart or suffer with a loved one, relative, etc. with dire medical problems, the government, nor do the rest of the citizens in this country, do not owe you or them resolution of your problems!

Our founding documents of this country say no such thing. It can't be any plainer than that. If you want to change this, get 3/4 of the states to ratify an amendment, otherwise STFU.

This government owes you your life (i.e., not to take it wantonly), your liberty (i.e., it cannot enslave you), and your freedom to pursue your fancy (however it does not guarantee your success).

If Romney gets nominated watch how quick the media jumps on his mormonism.
This is really the bigger issue. It's possible that Romney can convince voters that the "democrats hijacked my health plan"... but the closer the media (and any non-Mormon) looks at Mormonism, the weirder it looks. It is very, very, very weird.

It would be like trying to elect a Scientologist as president. I just don't think it can happen.

Mormonism and Scientology are way too easy to target by the media as being "way out there". Because they are.

It is an act isn’t. It’s disheartening to see people you think may have a clue, who then turn out to be cheerleaders for people who are absolutely clueless. It’s also disgusting.

I like your truism.

Yep, I wouldn't vote for Mitt because of his cultism alone but he also gives me plenty of other reasons to not vote for him.

Thanks for the ping Gene.

Jim, you've finally done/said something I disagree with completely. You can praise Myth till you're blue in the face. This will only denigrate you in the eyes of your supporters, myself included.

Understand this, Jim: I will absolutely NOT vote for Romney should he a candidate in 2012. Period!

Jim DeMint Ping!

The rest of his quote, if anyone cares:

“DeMint blames Democrats in the Massachusetts State Legislature for adding many of the features to Romney’s plan that many on the right decry.

“It just depends on how he plays it. For me, I think he started with some good ideas that were essentially hijacked by the Democrat Legislature,” DeMint said.”

Nonetheless, Romney didn’t veto what the Dems sent to him, and that’s where the buck stops.

Yep. You’ve got it exactly right.

If these people had the moral sense to first ask the question “is it constitutional?” they might be of some value.

Until then, they’re just part of the two-legged socialist beast, dragging the country into oblivion.

That’s straight out of the Romney campaign talking points, by the way. “It’s all the fault of those rascally Democrats!”

When I say I’m “staying home” that means that I won’t be voting for Romney. Actually, if push comes to shove and Obama seems to have the upper hand, I probably will vote for him even if I have to hold my nose, but it will be very, very difficult for me to do so. Otherwise, my vote will go to an independent candidate on the ballot who mirrors my thinking.

I vote in every election. My polling place, a school, is right next door to me. I can literally stand on the corner of my property and touch it.

His blatant hypocrisy is.

DeMint is wrong on this one, likely wrong on other things too.

That being said, he's one of our better senators, truly a conservative we can be proud to support.

I'm not going to throw him under the bus for one wrong statement.

Obama and the democrats are the enemy, not Jim DeMint. Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good, that's one of the ways to ensure democrat victory.
