BENGHAZI, Libya -- A plane has been shot down over the main rebel-held city in eastern Libya.
An Associated Press reporter saw the plane go down in flames outside Benghazi early Saturday after the area came under shelling.
A black cloud went up over the city's southern outskirts.
Muammar Qaddafi's government declared a cease-fire Friday in an attempt to outmaneuver Western military intervention. But the opposition has been saying shells rained down well after the announcement and accused the Libyan leader of lying.

Apparently a lot of help is coming from Egypt- arms etc. Recent history suggests the only organized group in Egypt was the MB. We’re being had in the takeover of the whole region by islamists.

I don’t see any evidence that the battle is between Islamists and the tyrant. I see a modernized people in a tribal country desiring the overthrow of the tyrant. There might be the fanatics on the margin but I don’t see them in the lead.
The Gulf nations are seemingly on the side of the rebels and they are certainly not in the radical/Iranian camp

Wonder if the French and British, who are supposed to do the fighting while Obama makes speeches, will have second thoughts about flying over Qaddafi’s anti-aircraft emplacements now. It looks like it could be a bit dangerous.
As long as Libya or any ME Country is not messing with our allies or our National interest why not encourage them to kill each other? Kill A LOT of each other. Maybe we could sneak in once in awhile and help them kill even more if it doesn’t involve to much risk?

This is a UN declared war with the goal of putting the Muslim Brotherhood in charge. When Obama gave his address to Libya, he kept saying “the international community” this and the international community” that. America was not mentioned. This is why Obama dragged his feet before announcing involvement. He was waiting for the UN to tell him his role.

Before we blow Gaddafi away, we should be damn sure that whatever replaces him will be an improvement. Remember the Shah of Iran.
I'm on Daffy's side right now. I suspect the rebels are hard-line Islamists.
Let Europe deal with it, without US. We have a full plate to deal with as it is.
Egypt has 200 F-16s and 1000 Abrams tanks.
If Egypt wanted to enforce a no-fly zone, she
could do it on her own.
If she wanted to overthrow Ghaddaffi, she could do it
on her own.
Tunisia, which just had its ‘revolution’, also has armed forces.
Obviously they don’t want to do this for some reason.
Egypt has always believed that the eastern part of Libya was logically a part of Egypt. Maybe they feel
that if Libya falls apart, they can “intervene”, occupy the area, and eventually claim it.
Or, maybe they just don’t want another Islamic state on their
border.
In any case, US forces are not needed in Libya if anyone
is really serious about getting rid of Ghaddaffi.
