Herman Cain Could Transform Lifetime of Effort into Political Capital
associated content ^ | 5-9-11 | Patricia Campion

By the end of the first GOP presidential debate in South Carolina, only one name emerged with solid promise: Herman Cain.

In 1988, Cain purchased Godfather's Pizza. By 1995, under his skillful guidance, Godfather's went from the verge of utter failure to become the fifth-largest pizza chain in America. Still, even as his managerial office skills helped him climb the success ladder, he never considered himself above the equally necessary task of cleaning bathroom toilets.

In the days since Cain's return to the political stage, the excitement he stirred is growing. There are three reasons why his challengers should be afraid.

First, Cain's positions regarding the highly unpopular policies of the current administration have grabbed the attention of weary Americans. Those who long to hear their voice reflected, not ignored, by Washington's efforts are encouraged by his determination to repeal Obamacare and his opposition to amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Second, regarding the economic chaos that our current leaders cannot seem to solve, Cain is a savvy businessman who turned a financial failure into a success. His plans to implement a Fair Tax system to jump-start business and reverse staggering unemployment numbers is being met with enthusiastic support. As rising gas prices are adding additional stress to an already struggling American populace, his plans to achieve true energy independence by drilling our own resources has inspired much-needed optimism about powering our own future.

The greatest advantage held by Cain is what the political elite see as his downfall. In this era of America's disdain for pompous, ineffective career politicians, they may want to re-evaluate such seriously misguided confidence. Right now, a "political outsider" who will clean a toilet himself rather than passing the buck is precisely what makes him so refreshing.

Some folks are irritated at the Fed Experience and TARP. But I think it’s fair to add that he is not in favor of the way the Fed is being run now and not in favor of the dual mandate — and he certainly is not in favor of how TARP has been administrated. Henry Paulson turned out to be a bigger skunk than even those who had studied him for years predicted.

BTW He is in favor of auditing both.

Rush was talking about Herman Caine today, saying something about not focusing on social issues, too divisive?

Did I hear Rush right?

He’s not “my candidate”. I do like him, but he’s not “my candidate”.

But to never have heard of him, and to have been a member of Free Republic since 2002, says to me you don’t actually spend much time here reading any of the articles or any of the comments... at least not on the subject of politics.

Maybe you just drift to the crime stories.

That’s cool.

And by the way, how does a photo of Herman Munster fit with “never heard of him”? That I just don’t get.

Cain is flying under the radar (at least as far as the MSM goes) until this last debate.

I think the sensitivity to the “Who is Herman Cain?” comment comes from the fact that the phrase is being used by his opponents to belittle Cain.

Personally, I think Cain should take a “Yankee Doodle” approach with the phrase (the British sung Yankee Doodle to belittle Americans, so Americans adopted it as a theme song). Cain should run with “Who is Herman Cain?” as a theme to show he’s an Washington outsider and to get info out about himself (the same tactic used by Carter in the ‘76 campaign).

I agree with your sentiments. Well stated. Support for some form of bank loans back in the heat of 2008 is simply not the same philosophical thing as supporting Obama Care or Stimulus or Cap and Trade. A lot of conservatives hated TARP but thought a run on the banks and resulting depression was the counter risk.

I respect anyone who disagrees with that, but it just is not the litmus issue.

No — I am plenty engaged. Maybe I missed the articles on him that day. But I do like the spectrum of topics we have here at FR and hit them all equally.

>>That’s cool.<<

Always good to know my FReeping pattern meets approval of...um, who are you again?

>>And by the way, how does a photo of Herman Munster fit with “never heard of him”? That I just don’t get.<<

You don’t? Ever play Pictionary or something similar?

Thanks — that clears some things up. My dentist seems to always hit a nerve when he does that 3, 4, 3, 2 thing with a pick. That happens sometimes in threads.

It’s a degrading image to post to represent a person “you’ve never heard about” going just by his first name. Seems pretty juvenile to me.

And when I say “that’s cool”, I’m not offering my approval, I’m just trying to keep the conversation light.

If you would rather get nasty, I’ll just drop out because I don’t really feel like getting into a nasty argument.

If you do, well, that’s cool.

Cain faces an uphill battle for the nomination for sure — but SC really helped him.

In a general election, he wipes Obama out. He’d go after him like black on Trump.

I was also trying to be light — doggone interwebz, you can’t elbow someone in the ribs when you rip a retort. And I don’t like smileys but I can toss one in... :)

It really was meant to be a light-hearted reposte.

Sorry if it came out wrong.

The Herman picture thing was also a joke — my sense of humor is sometimes misunderstood.

But my underlying point about name recognition is quite real.

The next step for him should be to lay out a plan of action that will fix America. Let the people know what he intends to do then he should say that unlike Obama he will carry out the plan or resign. I’m serious about the resigning part. He should write the letter of resignation now, deliver it to the Chief Justice or something. I think people could connect with that. If he fails to do what he promises to do, then he can be sued for breach of contract or something. Just a thought that needs some polishing. I am sick and tired of politicians who promise everything then fail to carry it out.

I’ve heard good things about Cain, but am not personally familiar with the man. Looks like some of us will need to do some research into what he’s all about, huh?

________________

Also, for anyone who’s not part of the Georgia list - Herman Cain will be hosting a very big “event” at Atlanta Centennial Olympic Park on May 21st, at High Noon.

He plans to make his announcement regarding his run for President. His press person says it will be more than an annoucement, it will be an experience! Hope to see other Cain supporters there, or even supporters of conservatism over RINOism.

Also, some of us will be finding some trademark Herman Cain cowboy hats to wear, and other gear (http://www.gopmall.com/candidates/president/herman-cain/)
