Why Maria Shriver Should Take Arnold Schwarzenegger Back

After 25 years of marriage we learned last week that Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenneger are separating. Now, this week, we have heard the revelations that the former California governor fathered a child with a household employee over a decade ago.
As surprising as this news is to some, I doubt it can come as a complete shock to Ms. Shriver and I believe it need not signal the end of her marriage.
Infidelity on the part of a husband or wife is not a reason to erase one's marital vows. In fact, in the aftermath of an affair, even in the aftermath of keeping a secret about a love child for a decade, spouses can reaffirm their commitments to one another and resolve to know one another at a more intimate level than ever.
Marriage, as I have written before, is a terrifically difficult journey for the vast majority of those who commit to it. Passion wanes, often ending entirely. If couples are not linked by rare and deep connections at the level of the soul, they come to feel entirely alone. For these reasons and others I believe the structure of marriage itself must be changed.
Surely, Ms. Shriver understood that in marrying a man who needed to build up his muscles as no man before him had ever done, a man who needed to be a film star, a man who needed to marry into a famous American family and a man who still needed the affirmation of a state's voters, that she was marrying a man with deep needs for admiration and affirmation.

As I read it, this psychiatrist, Dr. Keith Ablow, seems to see Arnold Schwarzenneger's outrageous adultery (that was responsible for him fathering a child with an employee that worked in his home) as a great opportunity for Maria and Arnold to strengthen their marriage and, according to Dr. Ablow, certainly no reason for divorce. How ridiculous. This kind of amoral approach to marriage and adultery is harmful to the naive people that might actually buy into Dr. Ablow's weird, immoral advice. He is a sad example of what happens when you try to separate morality from sex and marriage. You get a psychiatrist contending, in all seriousness, that a husbands infidelity, even when it goes so far as to produce a child with his mistress, is somehow a means to reach a 'deeper relationship' with his humiliated wife. It is beyond absurd. Frankly, like many, I'm not terribly interested in this wealthy couples marital drama but this irrational 'advice' from Dr. Keith Ablow is enough to make one question his sanity.

They, in fact, have 4 children ages 21 to 14. The youngest is 5 days different in age from his love lust child.that is my guess anyway. Wow. Five days. I had no idea. Poor kid. He (or she) has to feel pretty freaked out right now.

It is bad advice. I don't know about slapping the label "immoral" or "amoral" on it though. One can find Arnold's conduct morally reprehensible and worthy of condemnation, but if husband and wife think there was something in the marriage worth saving they might try to save it, if only "for the children's sake." Once again, I don't think that would be the right course, but it's the way very moral people behaved in years past.

Garbage. She should take her children and leave at once. No child should be taught to tolerate this kind of disrespect and betrayal. This “forgiveness” baloney going on today is destroying our country and our culture. It’s just rationalization to do “what I want, when I want and with whomever I want”.

Well obviously they weren’t practicing safe sex.
How about if she is unfulfilled? Can she go out and get some strange, as long as she cooks dinner, does the laundry and is a good mom?

Absolutely agree.
There is no defense for a man doing this to his family. Arnold Shwarzenegger no longer deserves any respect whatsoever in my opinion. He deserves shame.

With regard to the incident I reported in Comment 13, where the husband was unfaithful during 4 months in Europe, this is what happened. The wife said she could understand how he felt a great need after several months away. However, the wife said she might have a great need some day, and if she acted on it, then it was one her husband owed her. In fact I think something like that happened a few years later, but they stayed married.

Also, a man can go 4 months without sex without exploding. That's no excuse. If he cheated like that, he cheated other times, too. No doubt. He just got better at not getting caught.
