Animal Rights Activists Calling For Ban Of Horse-Drawn Carriages In NYC June 5, 2011 9:30 AM

Reporting Sophia Hall

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Animal rights activists want horse-drawn carriages to ride off into the sunset.

Dozens rallied Saturday at Central Park to protest what they call safety hazards and animal cruelty.

“It really isn’t a safe environment for anybody and we have to use our powers of human empathy to relieve horses of this grinding work,” said assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal.

Rosenthal said she feels sick inside when she sees the horses and carriages on the side on the road. “The horses have to work in the heat, in the winter,” she said. ”I was looking at them today, their feed was filled with pigeons.”

She said places like Biloxi, Mississippi and Beijing, China have banned horse and carriage rides and because the city council refused to act on the ban, Rosenthal said they will fight for the ban on a state level.

Horses are VERY EXPENSIVE.

Just to keep them alive you need more than just native grass (at least west TX grass).

If you live in an area where there is plentiful local feed, the price goes down...

unfortunately, we have had all these fires (less grass, less feed.)

Loons is too kind....maniacs is more like it. I wonder if this “loony maniac” has ever watched a western movie or TV show? I mean, how was the west settled?......uh, by station wagon....by semi trucks.....by rental vans?? These horses are doing what they were designed and created to do. I would be the first one to complain if I saw one underfed or abused but so far I haven’t seen it.....in pics or in person. Some people have entirely too much time on their hands and too little brains in their heads!

“We need to kill all domesticated animals to save them”.

That is exactly what will happen to horses, cows and all domesticated animals if they are not used for their intended purpose. I am not in favor of mistreating any animal but animal rights whackos are nuts!

Exactly. People have this fantasy about horses frolicking around a pasture chasing butterflies. Maybe they should go out and look at how non-domesticated horses (mustangs, for example) live: on the verge of starvation much of the time, fighting with each other to stay alive, and constantly pursued by predators.

Horses are expensive to keep and feed, and if they didn’t have any use to human beings, they’d have disappeared by now.

In addition, I can tell you (as a horse owner) that horses actually like to work. They like the attention, they like the stability, and some horses even take training as a sort of challenge (good race horses and dressage horses are not being “abused,” but actually have enough smarts to enjoy doing something well).

The carriage horses here in my little town spend most of their days being fed carrots and being brushed by the drivers while they wait for fares, broken up by 20 minute trips around town. Their worst threat is probably that of having their noses rubbed off by the friendly tourists...

I grew up in New York and used to love to go down to pat the horses on the edge of the park when I was a kid. When I was back there a couple of weeks ago, I was happy to see kids standing next to a horse and giving him little shy pats while the Irish driver told them something unintelligible about how to take care of a horse.

But once the Greens have banned automobiles, how are we getting to work?

Maybe PETA will pull the rickshaws. Could be interesting in a foot of snow...

If cows weren’t used for meat and milk do you think anyone would keep them for pets? There might be the odd pair in the zoo... but wait...... zoos are cruel!

This really hits home for me. I don't have a carriage business but I do show my Shire drafts which are on the endangered list. Without a purpose or a job, animals will become extinct which is exactly what these whack jobs want. As you can see, I also abuse my horses from birth to maturity....

My two daughters pose even a more serious threat. They like to kiss them on their noses. Not sure if the horse minds or not. I’ve done all that I can do to sway them from this cruel behavior to no avail /s.

Wild horses live in the hot summer and cold winter, without even the shelter of barns - and fear of being eaten by predators. Shall we ban wild horses for the hardship of their lives?

People have this fantasy about horses frolicking around a pasture chasing butterflies.

That's not a fantasy. In my former job as an Undercover Horse looking for illegal salt-lick trafficking, most of the horses I met did, indeed, frolic, and many chased butterflys. If a horse catches one and eats it, they crap skittles for a week, so it is not only entertaining, but profitable.
