The greater danger of 'carry' (Wisconsin barf alert)
Milwaukee J-S ^ | 29 june 2011 | John Ridley

Posted on 06/29/2011 11:20:56 AM PDT by rellimpank

Life would be a whole lot simpler if our omniscient Founding Fathers had left us a Constitution replete with footnotes, references and Cliffs Notes so it would be clear to all concerned how to correlate the intent of their 1776 utterances with the realities of 2011. They didn't, so we are left to speculate.

In regard to the "right to bear arms," I'm willing to concede that under our Constitution, citizens possibly have the right to carry a concealed weapon to work, to the dentist, the hairdresser, golfing, to the synagogue or the movies.

My question is who would want to? With crime rates falling in even our toughest neighborhoods, who besides paramilitary militias could possibly conceive of a clear and present danger that daily necessitates carrying a gun?

Whatever possesses a person to get all obsessed about "carrying" while living and working in ZIP codes where the incidence of violent crime is minuscule? Some say there is a need for concealed carry in these areas because you never know when there might be a need for self-protection from attack by an itinerant vicious assailant.

I do not support carrying a gun on one’s person as one goes about their daily affairs.

At the risk of hurting your "feelings" ... how can I say this nicely .... you're either uninformed, ignorant, or both.

The shoot out at the OK Corral in old Tombstone had as its proximate cause the Earp's going to disarm the Clanton's as the latter were carrying against a Tombstone ordinance.

Once again proving that criminals don't give a rat's ass about any gun laws. Ike Clanton and his "cowboy" gang were known to be cattle rustlers, robbers and murderers. Earp had good cause to go after them regardless.

If I see you getting robbed, raped or worse, I then promise NOT to protect you with MY GUN.

With crime rates falling in even our toughest neighborhoods,

Isn’t it amazing how leftists are supposed to be the brightest bulbs on the block and they cannot grasp the simple idea that it’s the fact that more areas allow concealed carry that is making these areas safer?

What can’t they understand about the concept of deterrence?

“If many people start carrying guns on a daily basis eventually we will be back to Dodge City 1870.

Dodge City 1870 had zero crime.

The Wild West was a figment of the journalists imaginations in the Eastern press. The Wild West is accurately portrayed in “Little House on the Prairie”. Sorry to pop your bubble, but it is so.

If I saw a "clear and present danger", I'd carry this, rather than my puny handgun:

Fortunately, I haven't seen a clear and present danger yet, so ordinary precautions are appropriate.

"... I do not support carrying a gun on one’s person as one goes about their daily affairs..."

...which will most likely be the time you'll wish you had carried one on your person.

"Why do you think carrying arms increasingly fell out of favor?"

Because liberal whiners like you started making up phony "blood will run in the streets" tales and lying with statistics -- and finally got enough leftists in office to get anti-2nd Amendment laws passed.

Americans have now seen the evil in your perfidy, and 49/50 of the States have reversed your treachery.

You are on the wrong forum.

“If many people start carrying guns on a daily basis eventually we will be back to Dodge City 1870.”

Hogwash. There are many states (I think perhaps even the majority) where people already carry guns every day, and these “wild west” fears have always failed to materialize.

Even if you were correct, I would gladly trade Dodge City 1870 for what we have today:

“According to historian Robert Dystra, Dodge City was rather mild in regard to homicides. During the “wild west” years (1870-1885), the average number of homicides per cattle town was about 1.5 per year. For six of those years, Dodge City had zero homicides, and reached a peak of only five in 1878 (from a May 17, 1991 Gun Week review of Dykstra, R., The Cattle Towns, 1968).”

Another liberal who, in professing to lecture, gets a basic fact wrong. 1776 was the Declaration of Independence, of course, not the Constitution, which was 1787. And the 2d Amendment was later still, in 1791.

I was about to post the same information.

the Ignorance of our "betters" is truly astounding.

AEMILIUS PAULUS sadly wrote:I am a firm supporter of the right to keep guns and ammunition at home, one’s place of business and maybe in one’s vehicle. I do not support carrying a gun on one’s person as one goes about their daily affairs. If many people start carrying guns on a daily basis eventually we will be back to Dodge City 1870. It might be wise to remember that even “wild west towns” restricted the carrying of fire arms.

Sad that you can't trust your fellow law abiding citizens.

Sad you can't embace the rights your forefathers gave you.

FYI The Earps were GUN GRABBERS.

Folks, do not buy this crime rate falling nonsense. 35 to 40 percent of all police departments DO NOT report their UCR stats to the FBI, who is generally the go to source on the nations crime rates.

Also some departments are classifying crimes differently in an attempt to keep the stats down. For instance, 15 cars broken into in on one lot. 15 car burglaries right? Wrong. Thats one incident.

Not that it’s an issue here, but if you know a friend that is not carrying, make a serious effort to change their mind.

The whole flashmob phenomenon is most likely here to stay. In fact, it has always been here, it just has not been reported.

I stand by that statement.

I agree with you fully.

I am afraid most people would be a bit bored with old west. Farmers farming, shopkeepers shopkeeping, laborers laboring probably wouldn’t keep them very interested.
