Angry John Boehner rallies GOP troops on debt limit
Politico ^ | July12 ,2011 | JOHN BRESNAHAN & JAKE SHERMAN & JONATHAN ALLEN |

Speaker John Boehner told a closed gathering of House Republicans on Tuesday morning that he was “pissed” over being unable to reach a “grand bargain” with President Barack Obama to make sweeping entitlement changes in return for an overhaul of the U.S. tax code.

But Boehner also accused Obama of failing to lead on the impending crisis over boosting the $14.3 trillion debt limit, according to people inside the GOP meeting.

But while Boehner was trying to rally his Republican troops Tuesday morning, he did warn them that they will quickly lose leverage in the debate as the country grows closer to the Aug. 2 debt default deadline and Wall Street and business leaders pressure them to cut a deal.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who opposed Boehner’s efforts to cut a “grand slam” deal with Obama, was just as blunt as the speaker. Cantor told rank-and-file Republicans that unless Democrats drop their insistence on tax increases as part of an agreement to raise the debt ceiling, there may be no compromise possible with Obama and Democratic congressional leaders.

“If the Democrats continue to insist on tax increases, there is no viable path forward,” Cantor warned, according to sources.

The overwhelming sentiment from House Republicans, according to those present in the room, was that even $2 trillion in cuts over 10 years — roughly what is being discussed at the White House meetings — isn’t sufficient. Republicans want even more cuts, and they want them immediately. Moderate Rep. Cliff Stearns of Florida, a 22-year veteran of the House, stood up and said $2.5 trillion wasn’t enough for a deal.

Florida Rep. Allen West emerged from the meeting to say that he didn’t want “fairy dust spending cuts” that are projected over the next decade.

I totally support the tea party reformers.

Boehner isn’t going to try raising taxes.

That aside, the war against Michele Bachmann by Palin supporters here on this site...now posting material generated by the Left against Michele and her husband and screaming “see, see, Bachmann can’t win because the media will destroy her and her husband (while themselves helping the media destroy her)” makes me sick.

I am for that. The borrowing has to stop first. If they are allowed to borrow they will and they will spend it faster than they can borrow it. I agree with shut it down. Then let the House dole out the money for the right things. We could eliminate the root of the problem.

Of course it would international trade INCREASES jobs in both of the trading partners. American are paid far too much to produce much of the products which are being made above. That is part of economic life. Even China is facing the problem of rising wages making some production unprofitable there.

Besides international trade is still a small part of the overall economy. Removing Obamacare costs will make labor much more attractive to corporations. Now they refuse to take on new employees or keep present ones because of the escalation of health care costs.

Nor has the GOP backed down on ObamaCare. It has to increase its forces to be effective.

It cannot attack everything at once and must concentrate on one or two interests since the average voters can barely put 2 and 2 together.

You could generate a list of a hundred critical issues but forget about it they cannot get to them all at the same time.

Above all KISS.

Something like that is bound to happen. Right now the GOP wants the Marxist to present their plan so that when the Marxist media starts crying about the cuts in the GOP plan the GOP can at least point to a Marxist plan that would be even worse for the USA.

I do not expect the Marxists to present a plan. I expect them to demigod the issue all the way. If I am correct then the GOP must send something reasonable and let the Marxists kill it. I think the Marxists want a shutdown-default to demigod into the next election, been saying that for some time now.

Its time to play hardball people. Call their bluff, then the democrats OWN it and we can batter them with it until November 2012!!!

Other than Cantor,West and a select other few tea partiers they are all going backwards and playing ring around the rosey. Obama canned the only good thing Clinton did; welfare reform. The democrats make us class warfare communists and the GOP toddle along and they all vote themselves payraises.NONE of them mean business until they delete the CRA amendments that destroyed our economy. Until this is and ObamaCare defunding and abolishing the current ways of the IRS,EPA,DOE and get all the corruption out of the ATF,FBI,DOJ it is nothing but the same ole dems get control blow it then the pubs get control blow it dog and pony show.

Sorry but Boehner compromising this for that on the golf course just ain’t doing it for the independent voters.Clean it all up like the majority of the people want and stop spending money on Chinese hookers and field mice garbage.

Well that is laying the cards on the table face up.

” Well, I, for one, haven’t ... but I still think Boehner is a weak, GOP elite (with a drinking problem). He got the leadership position because it was his turn.”

Yep. Just the “good ol boy network” propping up other fellow members of the “good ol boy network”

These “back stabbers” are the same ones who would let Obama win re election by staying home if we cannot nominate the next Ronald Reagan.

You “think” he has a drinking problem?

Prove it.

My point is, the rap on Boehner is that “he will cave on taxes...mark it, he will cave”. Wrong. But will they admit it? They will double down against the man because he’s someone they like to verbally abuse.

Would we all like a more perfect leader? Sure. But there isn’t one. Stylistically, there are better ones than Boehner, but they would raise our ire sooner or later one way or another. That’s life.

Is he an elite?

Based on being in Congress a lot of years, yes, but based on his life in how he got there, no.

He was one of I think it was 9 children whose father ran a bar. By age 10 he worked there, sweeping floors, etc. He worked to help put himself through college and went to night school to get his degree. He started his own small business. He was elected president of a homeowner’s association where he lived, and he began to fight city hall, so to speak, and to care what the state and federal governments were doing as well that hurt people like him...small business owners. He then ran for the House.

I don’t see that as elite.

If you do, I can’t help it.

They are doing enough to hold the class warfare crap to a mere blurp but I want true reform I am tired of the games. The left gets power and blows it the right gets power and blows it and sits back (Bush) and allows their good name to be Alinskyized. I want America back.Enough of the games they have gone far enough. Let the left that still whines about vote counts in Fla. have Gore and Obama and all move to a liberal state and go broke protecting their warped ideals on their own.The left love and protect terrorists rights let them go play elsewhere I am sick of it.

Sorry, Boehner isn’t a dictator...that’s Obama’s gig.

He didn’t give this for that on the golf course. No deal has been reached.
