Undefeated is coming to Pay Per View.
Yahoo ^

Posted on 07/26/2011 11:14:14 AM PDT by GreenvillePatriot

The Undefeated," the documentary about Sarah Palin, appears to have suffered box office defeat.

The film opened in 10 locations last week and upped its exposure to 14 cities this weekend. But Reuters today reports that even as the number of screening venues increased, box office revenue has declined by more than 63 percent. It grossed only $24,000 this past weekend.

Victory Film Group and distributor ARC Entertainment announced Sunday that the doc about the former Alaska governor will be available via video on demand and pay-per-view starting Sept. 1. "ARC will continue to expand the limited engagement theatrical release nationwide throughout August and September as demand across the country remains high," the companies announced in a press release.

But reports such as the one in Reuters suggest lagging sales and attendance prompted the hasty pay-per-view push.

The film was largely panned by critics, despite invoking cheers from Palin supporters. Reports prior to this weekend indicated a per-screen average of $7,500, a figure Atlantic Wire editor Gabriel Snyder (former box office reporter for Variety) said last week was "not a number that anyone should brag about."

The companies backing the movie said in their release Sunday that per-screen averages were "above $11,000 in top markets."

Supporters hoped the film (which was made without Palin's participation) coupled with Palin's bus tour (which is currently stalled) would boost Palin's popularity ahead of her official 2012 decision. The potential candidate has stated she will announce her 2012 plans this August or September.

Maybe if they played it in theaters that we can get to. I wanted to see it but I'm not traveling 60 miles and then getting home after midnight only to get up the next morning to go to work.
Just not happening.

“she will announce her 2012 plans this August or September.”

August 1st would be good.

I have NEVER paid for video on demand or pay-per-view , but I will the second this is released.

They’re still not getting it-—the point of the film was NOT to make money, but to get the truth about Sarah Palin’s record out into the general public and expanding her support base. By taking it to Walmart and Pay-Per-View, Bannon is doing just that. Youtube will be next.

Consider the source, the same story is being bounced around since yesterday. Yet, I've also read that the documentary is being further expanded to new markets.

It is what it is, a low budget documentary with no advertising other than social networking. It will probably have a fairly decent life on pay per view and on DVD.

I suspect Bannon will still make out nicely and (from what I've read) the film does help Palin with her image.

I actually don't think we disagree on the success of “The Undefeated”.

This story was already debunked yesterday I thought?

The facts are not correct, in that it will not come to ppv etc until October?

Am open to correction for sure

Yep, I’ve really been wanting to see this movie, but an 8 hour round trip is not worth it. I will wait until it’s closer to home or buy it on pay per view, but I absolutely will watch it.

Most of the mainstream media is misreporting on The Undefeated. It is not going straight to pay-per-view and video as some have claimed; it will remain in theaters until September. It will be shown in four new cities this week. The cities are Cincinatti, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, Charleston, South Carolina, and Salt Lake City, Utah. You can purchase your tickets here. It is important that you find a way to go if you can and bring as many supporters and skeptics as possible to the theaters this week. The media has written the film’s obituary but we have the opportunity to write its week 3 comeback.

Bring the movie to someplace halfway close to me and I’ll see it — if not, I’ll rent it later — but I want to view it!

Heard on radio about two weeks ago that Bannon reported standing ovations at most showings that he heard about. But where WAS this? I’m in L.A. and finding anything other than far left garbage is impossible, and I can’t drive to Bakersfield to see a movie.

The Undefeated is playing at the Ontario Mills 30, showtimes are: 10AM, 1:55PM, 4:50, 7:40 and 10:30 thru this Thursday.

RonDog was there Sat., I went yesterday, and both of us and hopefully a few others on Thur. at the 1:55 showing, and plan to greet those for the next showing.

First, the point of ANY movie is to make money unless you are a socialist.

I know Steve Bannon and he hopes/intends to make money on this.

Second, as I told everyone and as Fantail 1952 correctly pointed out, this movie had a very mediocre opening given that it opened in 10 "pre-screened" Palin-friendly cities and how has had a 66% dropoff from week 1---which is higher than the average movie of any kind (50% is the norm).

Third, it is possible to make a profit on Wal-mart and PPV---but NOBODY wants to go there this early. Your profit margins at WM are razor thin, and the film will likely retail for $9.99 rather than that "normal" $19.99. So even if you sell 100,000 copies, the producer's cut will be something like $20k. Remember, this is a million dollar production.

Finally, don't kid yourself: this was just another test gauge of Palin's popularity and I'm sure this was not what her camp wanted. I'd bet you a dollar that ever since the bus tour she has been running polls and focus groups designed to see if she is overcoming her very high negatives with women and indies, and I'm sure that at any time if she had seen what she hoped, she would have announced.

It was up in the air before, but now I’m ready to stake my claim that she won’t run. Why? She was waiting on the public reaction to this movie before deciding, and it basically confirms her worst fears. I mean after the opening weekend, only a few thousand Americans saw it and she needs to convert literally millions of us.

According to IMDB pro, which I just checked, the movie played to an average of 52 people per showing on the first weekend, 15 per showing on the second. With a revenue of about $100,000 even if there was NO “P&A” (Bannon says there was no advertising, but even getting to showings and getting stuff out by word of mouth costs money), the movie cost $1m. So it will have to have a supercharged ppv and DVD sale to break even, let alone make money. “Atlas Shrugged,” also a disappointment, made back about half of its production costs

... but now I’m ready to stake my claim that she won’t run.

I doubt you know anything about her life, much less her decision to run. She has millions of supporters, and this movie is no measure of her eventual chances of success.

I, like many others on this board, have been saving our dimes for her run, and I'll take any bets you wish to make. It will make my "war chest" larger. I know how to bundle, and I'll take your money and add it to the $43k I have already line up.

Do you feel lucky?

I saw the movie in Orange and met RonDog later. Here is my review. I also agree with this review at Hot Air (thread). I gave the movie 6 out of 10 at IMDb.

I was not trying to find fault with you in any way, was only commenting on the article which btw was on another thread here yesterday.

Yahoo I think was siting Reuters, I believe everybody was siting Reuters, who claimed that the Undefeated was a failure. They tried to make it sound like the film had done so poorly that they where shutting down and going straight to ppv etc.

It was a misleading article, nothing to do with you!

C4P said it was misleading , and they have taken issue with the article, a very negative hit piece without question
