The Iowa straw poll results demonstrate that Bachman has a core of committed followers who may become the basis for a strong showing in the caucuses. In addition, her victory helps to gain attention and credibility and spur fund-raising. The nomination process can be nerve wracking and fractious, but this year it will unite and energize the party.

Romney may yet become the GOP nominee. His money, lead in the polls, and national campaign experience make him a contender.

Candidates are not created equal. Behind closed doors, major donors and interest groups discuss the election in unsentimental terms of who has the best chance to win. Polling, fund raising, campaign organization, issues, and candidate quality are key factors.

they just take the fun out of it...I think...just my thought

that social conservatives would be happy one has been consistently winning polls in a primary race for GOP nod

i have not seen that in 27 years...

Palin running or not is not important with regard to the fact that an undisputed social conservative who has not backed down nor parsed anything controversial has been leading polls for weeks now

do youngsters here not realize this is far different than we usually get from GOP establishment?

if Palin enters...choosing tween her and Bachmann would be like choosing tween Eva Green or Mila Kunis for the weekend

or Tom Jefferson or James Madison for your classics tutor

in other words...a great problem to have

“People actually have to pay $30 to cast a vote.”
Actually the candidates pay for a big majority of the tickets. They put on big feeds for the participants who have the tickets and even provide transport.

All these “straw polls” determine is which candidate has the better campaign organization in Iowa. They also provide a candidate some confidence that they should continue the run if they are in the top 3 or 4. This “straw poll” is part of the Iowa State Fair sideshow.

Wow, I’m shocked. How did the Ronulian’s fail to stuff the ballot box?

This gives me a bit of additional faith. Ron Paul showed himself as the barking moonbat he really is when discussing Iran. Glad to see his cult was rejected.

I understand completely he’s a RINO. However I will vote for anyone over Obama. This nation will not survive four more years with him.

Can someone explain to me about these ‘straw poles’ and what kind of weight they carry as far as credibility?

$30 fee for the opportunity to vote. Candidates pay for venue space, with size and prime location going to the highest bidder. Candidates pay transportation for out-of-town supporters and pay admission fees to sway the outcome.

The Ames (Iowa) Straw Poll is a reasonable indicator of early candidate campaign organizational strength and funding. It is not a good indicator of election outcome.

He didn’t participate in the Straw Poll. The others showed up, or had well funded write in campaigns like Perry did.

Thank you for that excellent explanation. Is it the same with other polls?

I'm new to FreeRepublic and I'm a bit confused about something that perhaps you can clear up for me. I see a lot of animosity directed toward Ron Paul and his supporters. Paul's personal life seems unimpeachable and his stand on most issues is solidly conservative. So why the animosity?

RuPaul has many great platforms, he is also a 911 truther. He has nothing to back it up. He blames America for a bunch of terrorist Muslims taking out the WTC.

Great news...Bachmann is the best candidate we have running. Thank God, RINOs lost out in this. No Romney, Pawlenty, Perry, Hunstman or any other RINO should be put in office to ride the wave of socialism we've experienced for the past three presidents.

Time to turn back to real Americanism and constitutionalism.

All you RINO supporters are truly disgusting in your support for the big government socialist elitist candidates. It is exactly your fault we are where we are today, supporting your false idols of American sellouts to one world government with your atheistic secularist roots.

You should go back to your public schools and insist your union thug atheistic secularist socialists actually teach you something TRUE about America and God. Good luck with that...

"Sorry, but none of the top three in this poll has any chance of being the next President of the United States. "

Right out of the libtard playbook...keep repeating a lie often and long enough and it will be accepted as truth. Well, Americans are on to your dubious tactics. Thank you, Lord! And I'll be you really are sorry a real conservative took this poll by a landslide against the RINOs.
