It’s just starting to heat up here, a little wind, but steady rain. Nothing close to bad, but it’s been soooo quiet all day. I’ll give a quick check with WU.

This one has a lot of folks scratching their heads. Large area of dry air entrapment on the south side.

Shep Smith and the Fox weather girl were discussing this about 20 minutes ago. They claim there's *some hope* that perhaps Irene could start to break up - but that it's "not likely"...

“I live on one of - if not, the smallest inhabited islands in NYC. We are 1 1/2 miles long by 1/2 mile wide at the widest point, comfortably nestled in the throat of Long Island Sound.”

How high are you above the ocean? The estimates are for 5-9 foot storm surge. If that happens, much of lower Manhattan could get flooded.

It looks increasingly extra-tropical. Not much of an eyewall at all.

Wow .. you were born there. I bet you could
tell some stories.

There you are .. #7. Never had the frame of
reference for it.

http://newyorkcity2005.web.infoseek.co.jp/information/maps/images/maps/bronx_map.jpg

What do you have to do to prepare for the surge?
Have a rooftop terrace? Have you ever been thru
anything like the type of flooding predicted?

I’m sure you’re stocked in with essentials.

God bless you and guide you. You’re surrounded by
water.

With the power off we didn’t want our steaks to spoil, so I was out under the covered patio grilling in the storm.

After losing power at one point for three days, when it became time to replace our stove, we switched to a gas stove. It still works when the power is off (although you need a lighter to ignite it then) and allows us to cook and keep the house at a livable temperature in the winter when we lose power.

New episode of Dr Who on in 15 minutes.

What is "Dr Who", a show? I'm sorry, FRiend... I'm not familiar with it.

I'm buzzing around doing chores (when I'm not on FR). Hubby has been watching baseball, Fox News, Weather Channel, whatever. The Red Sox tried to get in a double header today at Fenway in Boston, they're currently in a rain delay.

Game 1 started at noon today, and didn't finish until after 6pm. That included two rain delays totalling 3 hours. Game 2 was supposed to start at 5pm. I don't know when it started, but they were in the top of the 5th when the tarp went back on the field. Only 3 outs shy for it to be a "legal game". Grrr

Discussion and 48-hour outlook

at 900 PM EDT...0100 UTC...the center of Hurricane Irene was located
near latitude 36.9 north...longitude 75.6 west. Irene is moving
toward the north-northeast near 16 mph...26 km/h...and this motion
accompanied by a gradual increase in forward speed is expected
during the next day or so. On the forecast track...the center of
Irene will move near or over the mid-Atlantic coast tonight...and
move over southern New England on Sunday. Irene is forecast to move
into eastern Canada Sunday night.

Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph...130 km/h...with higher
gusts. Irene is forecast to remain a hurricane as it moves near or
over the mid-Atlantic coast and approaches New England. The
hurricane is forecast to weaken after landfall in New England and
become a Post-tropical cyclone Sunday night or early Monday.

Irene is a large tropical cyclone. Hurricane-force winds extend
outward up to 85 miles...140 km...from the center...and
tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 290 miles...465 km.
A wind gust to 76 mph was recently reported at the Williamsburg-
Jamestown Virginia Airport. Tropical storm conditions will
gradually spread northward into northern portions of the Delmarva
Peninsula and southern New Jersey.

A storm surge height of about 5 feet has been observed at Oregon
Inlet North Carolina...and a storm surge height of about 4 feet
has occurred thus far at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The
preliminary water level at the Chesapeake Bay bridge Tunnel has
recently peaked near the record level that was established during
Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

Rainfall amounts of 10 to 14 inches have already occurred over a
large portion of eastern North Carolina and extreme southeastern
Virginia...with the highest amount of 14.00 inches reported at
Bunyan North Carolina thus far.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 951 mb...28.08 inches.

The storm should be pulling away now, I hope we have no other problems, but I think it’s going to be a long night.

Yes,it's going to be a long night - we're in northern Accomack County. Still have poweer, but still have a couple hours to go before I can be in your position of saying it is pulling away.

Stay safe.
