I like the live threads because you really get a feel for what is happening.

But I do find your info intriguing.

Let’s all try to get along... shouldn’t this thread be big enough for all of us?
:)

I spent about a week this summer digging a “seep-away” near one of my basement trouble spots. Dug a big hole about 5 feet from the house and a trench down towards it, loaded with gravel. This should be a good test to see if it was worth it. (Well, I did get a tan & some exercise, so it shouldn’t be a total loss).

Here in Long Island we now have rain and a few gusts of wind. I expect it to get worse tonight through tomorrow.

Seems like tomorrow is our “dooms day”. Hopefully I won’t lose power and can keep you updated,

"Reports of major #flooding around Norristown, Pa. Schuylkill River expected to reach major flood stage by Sunday evening."

Not surprised. The bottom of Norristown near the river is very low ground and prone to flooding. We're on a creek that drains into Wissahickon Creek, which in turns dumps into the Schuylkill River. The Schuylkill is quick to flood, as it is shallow and drains many local creeks. There are creeks all over this area, and back in colonial times it was known for its many mills, which were powered by those very creeks. Fortunately we also tend to drain quickly once the rains stop. The same can't be said for the Delaware River. With all the rain north of us, flooding on the Delaware could be pretty serious over several days.

Hundreds of thousands of people have evacuated their homes these past two days. Nine people have lost their lives (so far). Power is out to millions of homes. Flooding is destroying many businesses and homes. Trees are falling, and crushing anything in their way.

Nautinurse spent hours putting this thread together for those in harm’s way, before Hurricane Irene even hit land.

Thank you, NautiNurse, and all who have contributed in a logical, factual manner, sharing their personal experiences.

Please show respect, for those worried souls right now, and for the Hostess who has gone way above board, to put this thread together for us....

..............mojitojoe enjoy your evening, and..... have a good life.

Are Shep Smith and Geraldo, of themselves a type of breaking news on the storm? Is that what you are saying?

I just looked out the door. Nasty out there. Internet is getting slower... They are a tag team, occasionally running in a pack. Jackals.

Whatever the weather where they are, it still really sucks here and I'm glad you are in another hurricane free portion of it right now to give everyone else including me the best info out there.

I've got a 15KW turned by a 30HP diesel tractor and I can't carry the whole house. Certain things kick on at the same time and you have a problem. Central air has a big start up surge current by itself, you can hear the diesel load up just with it kicking on.

Lots of people ruin their generators after a storm by trying to power up too much, especially the smaller 5 and 7.5KW units or they ruin the engines by not changing oil every 24 hours (engines without oil filters).
