I realize how rain soaked y’all have been up there this month. But here in eastern VA and north east NC there has been very little rain all summer. There’s a huge swamp wildfire burning on the VA/NC border that they estimate will take a minimum of 6 inches of rain to get under control, let alone put it out.

Y all up there can send your rain from Irene to Texas, we’ll keep enough of it to put out the fire and give a drink to our dry ground, and we’ll send the wind out to sea!

Storm chatter takes our minds off the horrific Obammy Economic news.....
When has the press NOT overplayed any story? (I mean other than any story that involves a Conservative success or Military victory—GOD knows the press would always downplay those!)

I’m going to ask my boss tomorrow if I can borrow one of the battery backups for the computer. If cells go down, I have no way of contacting anyone.....

Besides, I MUST FReep on a daily basis, just not as much as I usually do if we lose electric.

I have an American friend who lives in London. When Londoners whinge about the weather, he tells them to go live in America if they think THEIR weather is strange.

I do think we have wild weather in the United States and that it may have helped form our character - good and bad.

Hope all is well with you and you ride this out in peace.

Your opinion is shared by at least one professional:

The hype over Hurricane Irene is overblown, predicts the CEO of Advanced Forecasting Corporation. "North of Delaware, most hurricane force winds will very likely be gusts, not sustained winds."

Interesting back and forth comments at the link.

Weather Underground (vile name, but ok forecasts) is currently showing it as Cat 1 over DC Sun morning, and 'only' tropical storm strength over NYC Sun afternoon.

That's still 50ish mph winds, but surely not the end of what passes for life in the Rotten Apple.

The f'n enemedia even lies about the weather, as tho no one will notice !

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Pravda . . .

From your posted link, from Dr. Simon Atkins, CEO, Advanced Forecasting Corporation:

The demise of Irene has already begun. There is no visible eye. The storm intensity is down to 99 mph. This would be a low-end category 2 or a strong category 1 storm, while 36 hours ago some predicted a catastrophic category 4 storm. Air Force Reserve aircraft have found that Irene's eyewall has collapsed, and the central pressure has risen -- rising pressure means a weakening storm.

Yes, it will be windy. However, north of Delaware most hurricane force winds will very likely be gusts, not sustained winds.

(your windage may vary)

From discussion at my link:

I had emphasized the flooding and storm surge on the Mark Levin Show, and on the GLG G+ original article. You are correct about the additional risk element of previous soil / ground saturation. And you are also correct (very likely) that most have overstated the amount of damage forthcoming. We will find out soon enough. I respect Joe Bastardi, just his forecast and mine differ at this point. Lots of dry air is being advected into the storm and there is increasing / moderate wind shear causing Irene to be lopsided. The prediction stands that Irene will make "landfall" on eastern-most NC as a high-end CAT 1, not a CAT 4 like most officials had said just this time yesterday (Thu 8/25/11) morning. Best regards, Dr. Simon Atkins CEO, Advanced Forecasting Corporation [AFC] Dr. Simon Atkins Dr. Simon Atkins

Aw thanks!!! Same to you. I’m going to ask my boss tomorrow if I can borrow one of our battery backups for a computer that will not be in use.

If we lose electric and cell, I have no way to stay in touch with the outside world (aka.....FReep).

Had total with drawls yesterday w/out it!

Well, I don’t know about a paper tiger, but I’m past Xolumbia, SC now, still heading east and the rain has stopped. We only had that one little bit. We’re about an hour out of Fayettville, I guess. I’ll check in when I can (son doesn’t have wireless).
