Skip to comments.Krauthammer: Rick Perry could be our next president

Right after their big splashes into the fray as candidates, the numerous Republican hopefuls enjoyed somewhat of a bump in their polling data, but ultimately their numbers did settle. And that phenomenon seems to apply to Texas Gov. Rick Perry at least thus far, who after his announcement earlier this month has seen his stock rise. However, could Perrys prominence be here to stay?
On this weekends broadcast of the syndicated program Inside Washington, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer argued that in the case of Perry, he is here to stay and has the right message for electoral success.
Look, it could be a fluke a Trump phenomenon, but I think it is deeper than that here, Krauthammer said. I think [New York Times columnist David] Brooks is right in his column. He says he has a simple message which is, Smaller government, I made it work. I created jobs, which is a powerful force in the country today.
And unlike Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan who said he would not be a candidate in 2012, Perry has a message that is simple, which makes him formidable in not only the GOP primary, but also the general election.
It is what powered the Republicans to their astonishing success in 2010, he continued. It is sort of Paul Ryan without the numbers and the nuance. And its a message that if he keeps it simple, I think that could be a winning message, in the primary and even in the general election.
“Make available” does not equal “required”
That seems very obvious to me. He can couch it as a benevolent act of some sort, but if that were the case he would not have required it to be given.
And “opt out” based on religious reasons is not a simple opt out provision.
Obimbo thinks he can just do executive orders. It may matter very much to get rid of him.
Well if you are implying that my friend has a criminal record...tattoos or piercings you'd be dead wrong...
I am from TX and have supported Perry through 4 elections and will support him for GOP President nominee. He is a conservative and certainly the people who are trashing him on this site for the most part appear to be liberals who are terrified that Perry will beat Obama. These same rantings are showing up (almost word for word) on several conservative web sites. Apparently a lot of uninformed conservatives are falling for this tripe.
Both Will and Krauthammer seem to be getting on board for Perry. Will Rove be next?
“You are either high...” could be taken as an offensive comment.
Or maybe I’m just being sensitive about the severe drought we’re having, and the devastating consequences.
You know, if your circumstance is unappealing, you can change it by moving. Maybe that is too Conservative of an idea for you.
Nobody’s stopping you from staying in rainy country either.
Would it be too conservative of you to pray for a little less rain?
I have wipers on the cars and umbrellas. It is depressing but not the end of the world. What is your deal?
Longest drought in New Mexico history. Biggest forest fire in New Mexico history. Some of the most beautiful country on the planet completely destroyed. Water shed ruined for generations. The Rio Grande runs black if it rains a half an inch from the runoff.
We’ve had some rain in my area, which was not affected by the Los Conchas, but I watched it from my house for over a month. I personally fought two small lightning strike fires in one week with our local volunteer fire dept before we started getting a little rain.
Not fun at all at my age, but we’re OK here. My neighbors up north, around Los Alamos, Santa Clara Pueblo, and all over the Jemez, not so much. Cattle ranchers in Texas and southern New Mexico, not so much.
So yes, we pray for rain.
I agree 100%. Plus, I want the interviews and debates to ask better questions. Perry was on Laura Ingraham on Thurdsay and she asked zero questions about immigration!
They're trying to get out in front of the obviously unstoppable EXPRESS train coming across the country from Texas to DC.
The politics section of The Daily Caller is now “blog” material?
As a Texan, I find your comment offensive. If the anti-Perry crowd is going to be allowed to call Texans traitors, FR will lose the support of many Texans. Vetting a candidate's record is acceptable. Attacking a candidate's supporters to the extent of calling them traitors is unacceptable.
FR is supposed to have a policy of "No personal attacks." Lately, I and many others have seen a small crowd of Palin supporters escalate the vitriol against Perry supporters. The "No personal attacks" policy is enforced on Palin threads but not on Perry threads.
I support both Palin and Perry. A few days ago, I reported abused on a vanity thread attacking Palin supporters. The thread was pulled. Friday night I reported abuse on a vanity thread attacking Perry supporters. That thread was not pulled.
Everyone understands that FR is "Palin Country." No one is asking FR to become "Perry Country." However, the vitriol against Perry supporters says to them that no matter how long they've been FReepers, how much money they've contributed to FR, or how dedicated they are to conservative values and FR's goals, they are not valued FReepers.
If that isn't the case, I'd ask that it be made clear.
Well, I support them ALL, Cain, Bachmann, Perry, Palin, I also like Rick Santorum, I even like Newt, except you can’t trust him with the money. And I’m not going to let republicans trash my governor just because THEY prefer just one of the above. And thank you, Buckeye...being called a traitor and a troll is offensive.
Since Sarah Palin hasn’t declared yet, and Rick Perry seems to be a threat. The democrats are pumping out Rick Perry attacks, smears, lies and propaganda faster than republicans on this site can pick them up and DECLARE them to be truth. The democrats are laughing like hyenas!
It’ll certainly be interesting when and if she declares to see if all the Sarah Palin supporters on this site pick up all the democratic attacks, smears, lies and propaganda the democrats can pump out about her and DECLARE it to be the truth!
I like Cain too. It doesn’t look like he has a chance at this point, but I like him.
I don’t dislike Bachmann, but the underhanded attacks from her staff against Sarah Palin turn me off. Sarah has displayed unequaled grace in the face of such intense hatred from the left. I can’t abide it from a fellow Republican.
Post 55 is a clear violation of the posting “rules” - but, what’s new about that?
I’ve pretty much accepted the stacked deck that’s dealt from here. There’s all kinds of stuff that used to be forbidden that is now allowed. Soon will be required.
The posting rules were mostly lifted on eligibility threads, but JR made that very clear and stated his purpose for his position. I accepted that and rolled with it. I’ll do the same with Palin v. Perry threads if he says that’s the way it’s gonna be. Until then, I’d like to see some enforcement of the rules in order to raise the level of discourse. Getting down in the gutter won’t help us win the country back from Obama and his thugs.
(Courtesy ping to JR.)
I hear that! Bachmann made some mistakes with her staff, some of whom think this is good strategy. If she intends to run to win, she’s going to have to do some house cleaning.
Knock it OFF!!
We could do a whole lot worse than Rick Perry.
I just can’t believe America would put Hussein in again for 4 more years.
Of course, I really didn’t believe they’d vote him in the first time either.
Honestly, he is the WORST. EVAH.
“Well if you are implying that my friend has a criminal record...tattoos or piercings you’d be dead wrong...”
But that’s what they all say. Even housewives that we were shocked to learn what they’d been up to. Trust no one at their word. Verify.
