STILWELL, Okla. -- In my understanding of the Judeo-Christian religion, the concept of heaven and hell is the destination of everyone after they die. Heaven is reserved for the people who, among other things, lived their lives in a civilized and caring way and had respect and understanding for their fellow man. Hell was intended as a place of confinement for the devil and his fallen angels; even though it wasn’t intended for man to be there, sadly many narcissist humans will be confined there also. A couple of days ago I watched a news clip where Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) suggested that all of the Tea Party activists should “go to hell.” If she is going to make such a statement, she needs to make the case for condemning the Tea Party groups to such a horrific punishment.

After the debt ceiling was increased and the stock market took a downturn, there were many left of center politicians who blamed the Tea Party for the downturn and even called it the Tea Party downturn. I am not a member of the Tea Party, but I am a conservative Republican and for many years we conservatives have been telling the American people that excessive spending on a federal level will destroy our economy. What is the big sin that has Maxine Waters in such a tizzy?

I doubt that Maxine Waters had detailed biblical (or other) theology on her mind. She doesn’t deserve to be taken as such. She just wants the Tea Party to be gone, because they are hell (on earth) to Democrats.

More or less, the damned segment of humanity is to be told to depart into the “eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Evangelicals differ on the exact meaning here (especially in the fervent bible belt) but a commonly accepted reading is that hell had been prepared for Satan and his co-rebels before man had ever fallen. An abode for men lost in their sin was a later purpose for hell, not its initial purpose.

This sort of ignorance is so sad. By grace you are saved through faith in Jesus Christ, not by good works. (Paraphrase of Eph. 2:8-9) We are all sinners naturally condemned to Hell - doing a few 'good deeds' or 'being civilized' is nonsense as a criterion for reconciliation with an absolute, holy, just God and sharing eternity with Him.

Another PERFECT example of why legislatures (state and federal) should be part-time jobs with 1/10th pay, NO retirement, NO medical insurance, NO perks and NO benefits. These POS politicians can get a job doing something productive not “progressive”.

How I live my life comes under the category of law. That "caring" and "respect" stuff is part of the "law" that Brother Paul writes about. How many pounds of "caring" or volts of "respect" will get me into Heaven? How about my neighbor who has just a small amount less than me?

Faith alone, available to all, is the price of Heaven, of eternal life in the presence of my Creator. Good works flow from that. Not the other way around.

I imagine someone clever could come up with a sermon on how one “gets” to heaven and tie in that part about the “debt ceiling” of Congress.

When reading, JOSEPHUS'S DISCOURSE TO THE GREEKS CONCERNING HADES it sounded eerily similar to Christ's story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16.

In Peter 2:4 the angles that sinned were imprisoned in Tartarus. A place where wikipedia had this In The Iliad (c. 700), Zeus asserts that Tartarus is "as far beneath Hades as heaven is high above the earth.

I'm not sure you go to heaven or hell when you die but then I don't think time functions or is perceived to the dead like the living.
