No, M 7-8s are pretty common in Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean from a historical perspective. The 1999 Izmit quake in NW Turkey was a 7.6.

A wide variety of earthquakes of this magnitude have struck Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Syria etc. particularly about 800-1,500 years ago.

The Greek reporting undoubtedly was based on the metric Richter scale.

Exploring the area via google earth, seems to indicate this is the site of an ancient super volcano

Yes, one can identify a supervolcano by looking at Google Earth for 10 seconds.

Sigh.

There are a number of volcanoes in the region, but Lake Van itself is not a caldera. It was formed from a lava flow from one of the volcanoes blocking drainage in the region.

They had a huge one in 99, near Izmit (one hour from istanbul, east). It leveled a lot of stuff.

Every day another earthquake. The quake gods are not happy and are demanding a sacrifice. Perhaps they’d be ok with RATS out of D.C.

Reuters is reporting there are no deaths. Hard to believe in that rubble.

That may be the Turkish gov't attempting spin.

Prayers for folks in Turkey, the dead, injured, and all in harm's way.

I guess that I’ll need to go to the toolbox and get out the metric adjustable wrench. I think it used to be called a crescent wrench.

Greece had it right as shown on the USGS site. The AP must have been measuring it from OWS using the bongos as a calibrator.

Her personal religion , whatever it may be, is not the problem. The ideology which calls itself “islam” is attempting to destroy whatever freedoms Turkish people may have had at one time in that country. For a brief time in history, Turkey had become a nascent modern society, with beautiful tourist destinations, requesting membership in NATO, and, for all intents and purposes, a secular approach to government. If, however, the MB has its way, your friend will find herself in a misogynist Medieval, backward and violent society that frowns upon Sweet Women Who Like To Sing. My heart goes out to nice, normal people who find themselves suddenly thrust into such situations. It might be good to pray for your friend!

I’m guessing 30-50,000 killed or so.

Or maybe the AP number was after its IMF haircut.

The other day she “liked” my Reagan quote “Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid.”

Sunday morning.... mid-day earthquake

Apparently the international press has abandoned the use of editors, as well. (Other reports indicate early afternoon)

Now why did you do that? It just screwed up the game to see how the AP stunningly got it wrong again. LOL!

Well replace it with another game: How soon and how many billions will the US give to Turkey.
