Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Joe Paterno is not the police. If someone saw a murder in the locker would they report it to the football coach? How does Paterno know the story is true?

JoePa IS Penn State, don't you think that something like this that could entirely ruin his reputation and the reputation of the university, deserved him looking more deeply into it? Did he ever directly confront Sandusky about it, to even determine if he was guilty or not? I would have moved the heavens and the earth, if need be, to get those answers as soon as possible.

This will be like a death in my family. Rural PA took much of their identity from JoePa and Penn State. They always held their heads up because they might be never-graduated coal miners but they were also Penn State.

It simply amazes me how so many grown adults across this nation place such importance on "their" college football team.

These people base their entire identity in life on a group of 20 year old kids they don't even know that happen to play a sport a few months out of the year.

Even if they don't know anybody that goes to school there or have any form of connection to the school, they seem to think the most important thing in their lives is a college sports team. I'll never understand it.

Lots of people have read the grand jury investigation, which outlines a lot of this. With each day, more and more tidbits have been released, including today a local radio guy talked about an incident in 1998 on the PSU campus where something happened, and a PSU security guard just told Sandusky to ‘stop taking showers with kids’. Then, not long after, Sandusky ‘retired’ but was still allowed access to PSU facilities for his camps.

The DA in 1998 let Sandusky walk, for some reason. He needs to be questioned.

The DA in 2005 disappeared mysteriously. That case needs to be reopened. There are no coincidences.

Whether you agree with what the Board of Trustees did or not, one thing to consider. JoePa, the AD, and the others involved in the scandal should have thought about this before not reporting anything for the past 9 YEARS allowing a MONSTER to continue to destroy kids. Even if you don’t break any laws, inaction like this can lead to firing.

What was a "boy" (or "boys") doing in the shower at Penn State in the first place?

Sandusky (retired coach) worked with the boys from unstable homes and had access to the Penn State athletic facilities (an office and keys to the building). He just brought the boys there under some pretext and used it as a place to groom and assault them.

And one of us has the wrong information regarding who told Paterno.

That's not surprising given all the "reporting" that is going on.

Everything I have read says the grad asst went to Paterno's home, not his father reporting it second hand.

And most of what I've heard on ESPN has the dad telling Paterno. The SeeBS timeline someone linked to above has the dad and the GA going to Joe's house the day after the event.

Now maybe the Grand Jury report has testimony about the conversations with Joe and perhaps the GA and his father weren't pulling punches and telling Joe the straight scoop. But I'd like to know Joe's side of what exactly was told to him before I am willing to throw away everything good he's accomplished. But no one seems to be doing that heavy lifting and that is sad too.

Honestly... ! PSU will forever be thought of in my mind as PCU, among other, much worse things.

FACT: Bear Bryant was serially unfaithful to his wife.

Please don’t hold him up as a paragon of virtue. Imagine the hurt he caused his poor wife.

Based on the outrage over the last few days, I don’t think pedophilia is going to be acceptable anytime this century.

Yeah ESPN.com had a timeline and I had to re-read it and then do a Wikipedia search to verify that the DA dismissed charges in 1998, went "missing" in 2005, declared "legally dead" in June 2011. How damning is that? I don't want to sound like a tin foil hat nut, but when something sounds like a plot in a Hollywood Gangster film, you know something isn't right.

Right now I have some friends going to the protest to take pictures I'm begging them not to I think this is going to turn very ugly.

It is a sad state of affairs that anyone is supporting JoePa.
Evil entered that program in the form of money and power and it was held up as more important than the devastation of young lives.
Anyone still supporting those involved in this ugly situation is blinded to what is really important.

You’re exactly right. The grand jury report says the grad asst. and his father went to meet with Paterno the very next day and “told him what he saw”. Didn’t say it was specific but didn’t say it wasn’t either. But judging by how upset the report said the grad asst. was my guess is he told him all of it. The grad is certainly culpable, moreso, but so was Paterno. The information as it was passed up the chain became less specific to the point where it was concluded that it “wasn’t that serious”. It was people covering their own asses and turning the other cheek at the expense of at least 8 kids and probably scores more.

Except it wasn’t after a “wrestling practice”. It was after attending a penn state practice , or after shopping etc.

I'm a Michigan State alum. My boss is a U of M alum. And we had a very heated talk today about all this- heated because we were in complete agreement that had this happened at either of our schools, and had been handled as poorly, etc. we'd be protesting every single day on campus and never wear a single school color again. I went a step farther and said I'd chuck my framed diploma at the admin building and tell them to burn in hell.

It IS that bad out there. And Big Ten people are probably now going back wondering why and the hell PSU was allowed entry to the Big Ten when all of this shit was going on!!!!!

It makes the Big Ten look absolutely foolish.

On a side note, if you want something to bring the conference realignments to a screaming halt, here it is.

If this happened at Florida, you can bet I wouldn’t be “dfwgator” anymore.

So why doesn’t Joepa come out and make a statement to calm the situation?
