(RTTNews) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's surge in support in national polls has extended to the early primary state of South Carolina, according to the results of an American Research Group survey released on Tuesday.

The poll showed that 33 percent of likely South Carolina Republican primary voters support Gingrich, with support for the former House speaker up sharply from 8 percent in a survey conducted in October.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney comes in second at 22 percent, down modestly from 25 percent in the two previous surveys.

Well, here you go. I still think this primary in particular is "fluid", meaning these numbers will change significantly until the day of their primary.

Why not add to more essential paragraphs from this unnecessarily excerpted article?
Gingrich seems to have benefited from a drop in support for former Pizza magnate Herman Cain, which has plunged to 10 percent from 26 percent.

Support for Rick Perry has also tumbled to 8 percent from 15 percent, with the Texas Governor now in a tie with Congressman Ron Paul, R-Texas.

Looks like Newt picked up most of his gain from Cain and Perrys supporters ... two of the more conservative candidates in the race. Therefore, Newt is attracting conservative support and should be considered the conservative alternative to Romney.

Is that the South Carolina in the movies? In this one most people I know support Cain. We’ll take Perry if we have to. A couple want Romney although they don’t matter much. Nobody I know wants Newt.

Sort of like how Romney was considered the "conservative" alternative to McCain last time.

sorry to say but Cain is DONE. Newt is a weird candidate but in this year that may be what it takes to win. He has a lot to like but baggage too. If Perry could put two sentences together he would be the man

Considering Goldwater lost to LBJ 486-52, I’d say the last thing we need is another Goldwater.
