How do you like those ballot restrictions now? [TEA Partyers unite against this RINO fascism!!]

~~snip~~

"A Gingrich campaign official prior to the move by the Republican Party of Virginia said the problem is how the rules are set up, arguing that the party is, for apparently the first time, cross-checking the addresses that signature-givers gave against the electronic voter database file for accuracies. A name without a proper address match was tossed, the official said."

"Romney will be forced to defend the exclusion of his number one rival, Gingrich, and also Perry."

Romney doesn't have to defend this. All he has to say is that the people of Virginia can choose their candidates on any basis they wish.

Of cou8rse we know this is not true as once a state chooses to have an election, they are regulated by a large body of state and federal law.

And precedent.

No, RPV will be defending any court challenge.

Good luck.

There is some interesting commentary at Sabato’s twitter page about the origins of all this and how it puts Virginia in a class by itself. Have lived here a long time and had no idea how restrictive the rules are.

Sabato says that most of the restrictive rules were put in place by rats to stifle competition.

Selective enforcement of the law is the rule of men, not of law.

I’ve worked as a canvasser previously. Let’s see.

6 weeks of canvassing netted me 400 signitures.

You’re telling me that Newt couldn’t round up 20k sigs in VA? Me and about 10 others depending on how we were spread out over the state could do it in a month.

Newt dropped the ball here, which is a pity.

onyx, the news couldnt be any worse. I am so sick. Iowa seems to have been so drawn out and I wasn’t expecting Newt to win in NH but believed he would have a good showing and take VA...how could this happen? Paul is a expert at running for president..what is this? the 3rd time? and Romney ran in the 2008 election so they are familiar with the political machine. The MONEY they both have is mind boggling. Would love to see the list of their contributors. LOOKS like I wont be able to vote for president in this elecion. I am sick, sick, sick.

I bet this has more to do with the 400 signatures from each district rule than, the signatures not being from valid registered voters.

I have not seen a satisfactory explanation of why all these names have been thrown out.

I find it impossible to believe that longtime politicians like Newt and Perry just submitted a bunch of bogus names thinking they could wing it.

It does not pass the smell test.

Now you know how we felt when Cain’s family was getting death threats.

It’s a real pity you didn’t stand behind Cain. I warned you that this would happen, and I’ve been proven right.

The GOP isn’t going to scuttle Newt until it’s too late for anyone but Romney to win, which they are now doing since they managed to destroy everyone but Newt and Romney.

Gator!!!!!! I think you nailed it! Rove has been harping on Gingrich’s lack of organization for weeks. Would not doubt if he was celebrating Newt being eliminated from the VA primary and Newt would have won in VA.

Something stinks bad

Just illustrates the fact that it's not Conservatives vs. Democrats, it's Conservatives vs. Socialists, Marxists, and Progressives.

Something the Tea Party has known for a while.

Now, most on this forum would support a law requiring that before casting a vote a voter must produce a driver’s license or some other document to prove that the voter is who he says he is. Why do you and others now have a problem with requiring the same in the primary process. Can you have it both ways without looking hypocritical? Mitt would be only slightly better than Obama for the next four years, but doesn’t logical consistency count for something?

When you move, RE REGISTER!!

In a perfect world.

Whenever I have moved, re-registering was not high on my list, until election time.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Dale!!!

AND there is plenty of time to get this done!

Frankly, that’s the legal argument. “Your Honor, Joe Jones placed his name on a petition in support of (e.g.) Mr. Perry- and is now being denied his vote because he failed to include his address. The primary is 4 months away. We ask the Court to allow Mr. Jones one week to provide the requisite address. How is the Virginia GOP harmed by such relief, as against the exclusion of Mr. Jones’ expressed will to vote for Mr. Perry?”

I thought I read that many of Newt signatures were completely missing adresses. That said, I think an equal protection lawsuit could at least force the verification of Paul and Romney petitions.

“The Republican party cross-checking addresses against database for the FIRST TIME? Smells pretty fishy to me.”

It stinks to high heaven. The VA gop is about as establishment as it gets. And they’ll likely get away with it. VA courts are not particularly sympathetic to these kinds of challenges.

This is one of those times that having run as a third party candidate probably helped Ron Paul; he knows that you have to dot the i’s and cross the t’s on the paperwork. States are always trying to exclude third parties from the ballot based on this kind of petty BS.

McDonnell has to be behind this. He wants to either vote present in this endorsement cycle or endorse Romney. Having Perry and Gingrich off the ballot gives him cover either way (endorsing Romney over Paul wont hurt Micky D with state conservatives). If it looks like a non Romney will get the nomination on the run up to Super Tuesday, Micky D will simply vote present. Bob McDonnell is fully entrenched in the establishment and is a danger. As a Virginian, I keep trying to warn everyone.

Yeah, onyx. I was just assuming it was bad ground game, but this is really, really fishy.

They’ve NEVER cross-checked signatures before, and suddenly all of these Mitt-backers in charge of the process in VA are requiring every signature be cross-checked with a database for correct addresses? Not even just to see if they are, in fact, registered voters, but they have to have correct addresses?

What constitutes an incorrect address? What if they just left off the zip code? How does having a different address prove you’re not a registered voter?

This was a very well-organized act by Team Romney to disqualify everyone. As I have said before: Virginia is winner-take-all. EVERYONE in VA should vote for Ron Paul now to deny Mitt Romney ANY delegates. These guys should NOT be rewarded for this absolute crock of steaming crap.
