GM recalling Chevrolet Sonics to check brake pads

DETROIT — General Motors Co. said on Friday that it is recalling more than 4,000 of its 2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars to check for missing brake pads.

The possibility that some Sonics could be missing an inner or outer brake pad was discovered during warranty service for a rental vehicle customer. GM said the problem “is expected to exist in very few cars,” and there are no known crashes or injuries related to the issue. A missing pad could require longer stopping distance, and contribute to a crash.

Dealers will inspect the front brakes for missing inner or outer pads and, if a pad is missing, install new pads. If needed, a new brake caliper or brake rotor, or both, will also be installed. Affected customers will receive dealer letters beginning Jan. 14

Gummit Motors quality problem. I don’t even think Commie cars were typically infamous for this level of oversight.

Anybody would stick their family into one of these toilets on wheels needs their head examined.

I once had an aftermarket brake pad delaminate from the metal backing plate.

This was on a rear wheel. There was an immediate and significant loss of pedal and braking ability - and I still had a good size metal plate as a brake pad to rub against the rotor.

It’s hard to imagine a vehicle with missing pads even stopping, much less not making all sorts of noises as the caliper assembly and piston grinds itself away on the rotor.

I’m surprised the piston didn’t pop out of it’s bore with all the extra clearance.

I’m pretty sure you can punch out the floorboard of one of these tin cans and use your feet, Flintstone-style.

These are the results when quality control is handled by union labor overseen by democRAT managers with gubment ownership.

This shows what government and Unions working hand in hand produce!

Perhaps the brake modulation system on these very new vehicles tells the still functional pair of brakes to kick in harder. But it ought to also turn the instrument panel idiot light on. Being found in a rental car, the average customer probably isn’t going to care if the instrument panel lights up like a Christmas tree, as long as the car still goes. A person who purchased the car would care more.

Cars may be missing brake pads, and GM is going to send them a letter on January 14?
“Dear Chevrolet Sonic owner; if you are still alive, please take this letter and your car to the nearest Chevrolet repair facility.”

These new smart systems may be so smart that they would not even try to apply pressure to a brake unit with that kind of egregious slack. Instead you’d just get the best possible braking out of the other wheels and a discreet little red light on the instrument panel.

Always look for the union label. Means quality does not exist.

I suspect the fault is more from a supplier than than from GM or their employees. I seriously doubt that any automobile assembly line installs brake pads. They are a very small component of much larger components (wheel assemblies) that arrive at the assembly plant.
That said, I wonder how those assemblies got into the GM plant. How those assemblies got installed on the automobile. And last how those assemblies were missed at the final inspection.

America is really dumbed down, if it takes a RECALL for owners to find out all that noise, squealing and shitty uneven braking isn’t normal.

This was no accident. The redundancy in quality assurance alone makes this suspect. This reeks of union sabotage

The piston in the caliper is probably not metal and wouldn’t make much noise. I can’t imagine someone not noticing the poor braking though. The omission of the pads during assembly though, almost has to be intentional

Bingo.Your questions are right on the money and can’t be answered with just an every day human error. This had to intentional on someone or several someones part. There needs to be a criminal investigation
