Legendary former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is gravely ill and his family is rushing to State College to be by his side, his family has confirmed
According to Onward State, Paterno was taken off of a respirator earlier today. However, the Paterno family has not confirmed that report.
Facebook and Twitter are flooded with students and fans saying that they are praying for Joe and for the Paterno family.
Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications, spokesman Dan McGinn said in a brief statement Saturday to The Associated Press. His doctors have now characterized his status as serious."
His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time, he said.

Prayers for Joe and family.
So tragic.
Paterno has that on his hands and no amount of "I Love Penn State Football" will wash that stain off.
So you can defend Paterno all you want. He was a willing accomplice to the rape of children whether you want to admit it to yourself or not. That's all I need to know. He shouldn't be dying surround by his family. At best he should be dying in a prison hospital somewhere. Sadly, he's apparently escaped that fate.
"He who would harm a child, better to have a millstone around their neck and be cast into the sea." Mr. Jesus H. Christ.
You do remember Mr. Jesus Christ, don't you?
“Oh I forgot. You’re Catholic. You’re completely comfortable defending organizations that cover up pedophilic rape of God only knows how many kids for decades. “
What a disgusting thing - to imply that any of us Catholics had a part in any cover-up of pedophile priests and that we weren’t outraged or disgusted. I will pray that you remove your head from your rectum & retract that comment.
As for Joe Pa, I am not convinced that he wasn’t a pedophile enabler, but as a Christian I hope he repented, sough God’s mercy & forgiveness, & that God will have mercy on his soul. Hell is a very bad place that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. And, heaven rejoices when sinners repent.
Let us show some class, dear Freeple. RIP.
Wow. I can recall when you were a respected and rational poster. When did you become unhinged?
Now you’re misquoting Christ. Quite a performance by you on this thread.
You wouldn't know a Christian if Jesus himself smacked you across the face.
Go soak your head. You’re getting belligerent.
What are you, drunk??
He has no more will to live—football was his life.
Multiple reports that his fight is over. RIP Joe Paterno.
In fact he gave him unrestricted access to the Penn State locker room where at least one child was raped. That makes "JoPa" (spit) what is legally known as "an accomplice both before and after the fact".
Paterno shouldn't be dying at home, he should be in a jail cell.
“Paterno shouldn’t be dying at home, he should be in a jail cell.”
Not disagreeing with you there. I do believe that JoePa knew what was happening & in order to retain fame & wealth, looked away. Disgusting, and for Paterno’s sake, I hope he realized his errors.
I am not condeming the man; I pray the Our Father & ask Him to forgive me my trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against me. It is up to God to do what is just.
Wow, if true he did fade amazingly fast. He may have lost the will to live. It remains a puzzle to me how someone who seemingly lived an exemplary life in most respects could have turned a blind eye to child rape in his own facilities. Whatever the facts prove to be, his family deserves our prayers, and the dead a slight modicum of respect.
What are you, drunk??A good bet.
Admin, can you update the title to reflect Paterno’s passing?
I would like to point that there are exactly zero facts supporting your view of events.
You may now return to your hateful ranting.
Can someone clarify this for me?
From what I understand JoePA received secondhand information about Sandusky and that he brought this information to the proper university authority. He was not a witness himself was he?
If this is true, why has he been so demonized?
Bear Bryant didn’t last, what 7 months?
Because he say Sandusky walking around free and didn;t say or do anythign about it.
I believe your great grandmother was right.
There will be much more information to come forth. There has been a rush to judgment, part from sincere concern for victims of Sandusky, part from media frenzy, and part from a desire to pull down an icon.
Has he died ?
Call it pedophile enabling or the inattentiveness of a football obsessed old man, thats what we know he was guilty of.

Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things. |
*sigh* Because he SAW Sandusky walking around free afterwards and did not say or do anything about it.
That is what we know to be true. Paterno was not a witness and was never accused of being a witness. He has never been accused of knowing anything prior to the 2002 incident, when he was notified by a graduate assistant. Paterno took this hearsay to his boss and the University police commissioner. Note that the accused was not an employee at that time and had not been for several years, so Paterno had no authority over him.
I personally have yet to figure out why he has been so demonized. The only explanation I have is that the media simply likes to take people down.
Yes
What wrongdoings?? As a PSU fan, JoePa isn’t perfect but if you are aiming the Sandusky scandal at JoePa, you are wrong.
My apologies.
It's pretty common, I guess, that when they finally make you quit doing what you are passionate about, you don't have as much to live for. You either have to come up with something to replace it in your life (travel with your wife, TV commentary or whatever) or else you will be ready for the hereafter. In Joe's case, of course, he had a bad cancer, and no way to know at this point whether he could have lasted longer or whether it was just the cancer. No matter what, an amazingly swift and terrible end to what had been a legendary career. It could be a Greek tragedy.
ML/NJ
The proper thing to do would’ve been pull a shotgun out from under his duster and take care of Sandusky right there.
Oh wait, we have a legal system. “Right to trial by jury” and all that. Who the hell thought of that?
In case you’re unsure, I’m trying to point out the ridiculous assertion that Paterno should’ve said or done something to a man he had no authority over after reporting secondhand information to the proper authorities.
Paterno just died.
Be strong, Sue.
For????
I’m confused?
Anywho, I have the 10 pm hour for Adoration tonight so I’m leaving now. Prayers for you, Narses, & all FReepers. And a Divine Mercy chaplet comin’ Joe Pa’s way.....even though I was absolutely NOT a fan of his.
You do NOT know the facts. What I’ve heard is that JoePa told the president of PSU’s trustees. If anything jhe is quilty of one thing - not following up.
My mouth gets ahead of me sometimes and I fail the test of honest Christian brotherhood. Sadly all too often. If you have time, please remember me in your prayers.
Got link?
That is so terribly sad. All he did was report something that someone else said that he had no firsthand knowledge of.
What else was he supposed to do?
ExCTCitizen... dude, go back to the friggin thread and read my posts. I said a simple prayer for him. I hoped he had made peace with any and all wrong doings in his life. I think my few threads were perfectly clear to anyone who wasn’t looking to pick something apart and try to start a fight. If you want to criticize a prayer and a wish that JoePa has made peace with God then do it with someone else or somewhere else. Have a good night.
Drudge/CBS Sports Cleveland
actually, he’s always been a staunch conservative ... that’s all you need to know. after that, 94% of the media (vote democrat) will vilify him whenever they can.
i’m going out to have a drink to JoePa and remember PSU.
i despise/detest the country that has evolved since then (the 80s)
“please remember me in your prayers.”
of course. Goodnight, Narses.
