I have never liked listening to Steyn, his accent just bothers me. I always look for another channel and apparently I will be listening to Laura?

I don’t think there was a clear winner, jenny.

Newt did the best he could against Romney’s avalanche of accusations at the beginning. That’s ordinarily difficult to handle given the artificially-imposed time limits of a debate; he’d be cut off. If he tried to ask for more time, he’d probably be denied, and he couldn’t count on audience support since NBC decided to suppress them. I’m curious as to how people will view what Newt said.

Romney’s strategy reminds me of what some NFL players do after they commit a foul and they know it: they raise their hands in the air as if nothing happened and try to move on. You could tell Romney was proud of what he did in the opening topics because he went the extra mile to make his murder smile look extra presidential. This could backfire either because people are repulsed by his negativity OR they changed the channel out of boredom before they got to hear his canned speeches.

Santorum had some better moments, especially with the pro-life stuff. But no matter how good he is on that, the endorsements and support just keep coming in for Newt. Rick did well tonight, but barring an event of significant consequence, I think his campaign is on life support.

Ron Paul...not going to go there.

"I think Newt responded just right on Medicare part D."

That was a very good moment. Romeny was looking maniacally desperate right up to that. Then he might have finally landed a punch, on the "influence peddling" business. I hope most people had probably already tuned him out by then.

RuPaul just lied again. HE WAS NOT DRAFTED.
THe Air Force never in it’s history had a draft.

Your post raised a question for me, which I presume some Freeper can answer. I finally made it to the end of the thread without seeing it answered so I'll post my question back to you.

Dr. Paul served as a flight surgeon. I know they had a "doctor draft" back then as both my father and his brother entered the service that way, although both served in the Army. The way I've been told it worked was physicians to be could sign up and choose when to interrupt their education. If you didn't sign up they could and did draft you right out of school to serve as whatever, but if you signed you were deferred until a time of your choosing. The process was technically voluntary, but a strong enough incentive to provide sufficient physicians, which the army would have otherwise had difficulty securing. It was a good deal for both sides.

What I don't know is, did the doctor draft supply just the army or did it supply all of the services? It was technically voluntary, so technically wouldn't break with Air Force tradition, but it was generally knows as the "doctor draft" so Dr. Paul might be telling the truth here. This might also explain an earlier Dr. Paul statement which then bit Newt. Newt said he wasn't eligible for the draft because he was married with one kid. Dr. Paul responded he went even though he was married with two. The doctor draft might explain why Paul was taken and why he said this but not his many other odd statements.

P.S. I arrived during Dad's service; everything wrong with me comes from being government issue. And although I arrived at Ft. Polk, with parents from IA and MN I doubt I'll ever be considered a "natural born southerner." Dad went in after internship as a general medical officer in the late 50s. His younger brother deferred until after his residency and went in as an Ophthalmologist. Which turned out to be an important job when he was stationed as the only military eye doctor in Korea in the late 60s. The CO there then only had one eye and was understandably concerned about its health!

Newt did a lot of things from the 80’s until he left in ‘99. He made his career by fearlessly confronting the very powerful, left-wing democrats. He took on the dictatorial Dem Speaker Tip O’Neill and actually caused O’Neill to be rebuked on the floor of the House, first time that happened in 200 years. He forced O’Neill’s democrat successor Speaker Jim Wright to resignation over a corrupt book deal that consisted of a huge payoff to Wright for a book that was essentially a bunch of blank pages. He pushed for ethics violations and formal censure of Barney Frank when his young boyfriend was running a brothel with very young (maybe underaged) guys out of Barney’s DC townhouse.

That all happened before Newt became Speaker. Newt electrified conservatives, especially Rush Limbaugh. In ‘94 when he led the conservatives to power, he had already created many enemies on the Left, and the GOP establishment feared him because in those days the establishment republicans were happy to be in the minority and get their kickbacks from people like O’Neill and Wright. Everybody was getting their earmarks, turnover in Congress was very low, and neither the democrats or the establishment GOP were happy with Newt coming in and cleaning things up.

The Contract With America was essentially a plan to clean things up. Newt brought 57 new conservatives into the House in ‘94, and forced spending cuts, reforms and things that the establishment didn’t really want. They were content with their old corruption. From the time Newt became Speaker, a gang of democrats formed a hit team and started creating ethics violations against him. Over a few years there were 84 violations, and the GOP establishment really didn’t come to help Newt - they wanted him out, too. Also, this ethics nonsense started to heat up during the Clinton Chinese Donations scandal, BEFORE Monica.

Anyway, the ethics committee took up the 84 ethics claims and threw 83 of them out as baseless. The one that stuck was a vague, tax-related disclosure issue that was so unclear it took months to figure out. In that time, nothing got done, so Newt agreed to accept it so that things could move forward. The establishment used this as a reason to turn on him and they got enough votes for Newt to step down as Speaker. When he left, the GOP was strong in both houses of Congress. In a few years the GOP leadership had squandered it all and in came Pelosi. Reid took the senate before that.

By the way, the one remaining ethics charge was proven invalid.

Andrea Mitchell was remarkably fair to Newt. My impression is that she is very disappointed in Romney. The angle she took relative to Ron Paul and Newt was interesting. Grandpa Ron basically acknowledged that his is a vanity campaign, and Newt managed him very well tonight. I was holding my breath every time Grandpa Ron spoke, waiting for another anti-Newt bomb to come out, but nothing really bad ever materialized. In all, Newt had a good night.

No, there was talk of recruiting some foreign born people for the military with specific skills like language, but they would be coming here legally. I don't know if the program was ever implemented but the numbers were very small.

During the Vietnam war we did allow Canadians and some others to join our military, but that was in time of war. Technically, even illegal aliens are supposed to register for the draft and could be drafted in time of real emergency.

Agree, but what do you expect from MSNBC? They want the GOP candidates to tear one another apart while ignoring the real problems, most of them due to Obama’s policies.

class of 1999 and zotted, we sure are losing a lot of long time freepers.

On the bright side, it should ease the load on the FR servers in what is sure to be a high-traffic election year.

Maybe Newt should have his opposition research look into how many and how much mittens paid his lobbyists at Bain capital. Hiring a lobbyist is just as bad as being a lobbyist.

Then he could have given his answer. Reiterated that in his case, he was never even a lobbyist as proved by the contract, but Mittens on the other hand ,actually did hire lobbyists. If lobbyists are so bad, how come mittens hired them?

Then he can point out that he has never been a lobbyist, has only been a consultant. Since Romney has also been a consultant, he knows the difference, and is just trying to mislead and muddy the issue.

Then when Romney comes back at him, just laugh at him: There you go again with those unfounded and untrue accusations. It never happened, it's been explained numerous times, mention the web site to fight the smears..

After that, if mittens keeps going just repeat, It never happened, but you used lobbyists. Use the broken record technique. Just keep repeating it. This leaves the opposition little else to pounce on.

If you have to repeat more than twice. Then you just say it's been answered, and the American people know that you are deliberately trying to mislead on this issue.

They would probably rather hear if you have any plans and policies to solve problems, instead of rehashing things that happened 16 years ago. If you continue to go on about this they are going to think you don't have a any.

Maybe at some point, ask mittens Don't you have any plans, policies or vision to talk about? Or ask him what proposals he has to stop lobbyists or something.

The humor he used in Iowa was a great way. He told mittens if he didn't stop telling lies about Newt, he would be forced to tell the truth about mittens

I think Newt was tired and off his game, but he still did well. I hope he gets some rest before the next debate.

here in Manhattan my guide says Fear Factor: “Leeches and Shaved Heads.” Perhaps they could introduce that into tonight’s showdown to give it some pep. :)

LOL!

Ugh, tonight's debate really DID need some pep - I want that two hours of my life back! >:-(

True but that is a fraction of the total result if Gingrich is up as much as polling implies, and he was trending up. I am still confident he will kick Romney’s ass, though it will be a little less than if the results of SC and the debate had been up first.
