Priceline Kills Off ‘The Negotiator’: William Shatner in “Grief Mode” But $600M Richer

"Save yourself - some money."

Those were William Shatner's last words as Priceline's "Negotiator." The discount-price travel booking site apparently killed off the television and movie legend last week in a TV advertisement.

In the commercial, which has been airing nationally and will also be shown during the Super Bowl pre-game show, Shatner's character saves the lives of fellow travelers as their bus teeters on the edge of a bridge. As the last passenger steps off, Shatner says "Save yourself - some money," handing his cellphone to a woman just before the bus falls off the bridge, bursting into flames as it crashes to the ground.

According to the company, Priceline is moving in a new direction - from negotiating to a fixed-price business model. In an official press release, Priceline's Chief Marketing Official Brett Keller said: "We felt it was necessary to go to extremes to grab the attention of every consumer in America and drive home the message that you don't have to negotiate to save money on a hotel at priceline.com. We know that The Negotiator has a lot of fans, and we hope that everyone understands this was something that just had to be done."

Because he accepted Priceline shares as part of compensation when the contract was signed in 1997, Shatner has reportedly earned $600 million as Pricline's pitchman. (Talk about smart negotiating!)

They haven't dared to tell Shatner's sidekick yet.

I think he made money cause he didn’t take himself serious. He’d take any part that came along. With the money he’s hade and how long he has been on TV maybe he was right in having a big ego....like Rush says it’s not a lie if you can do it....:O)

For those who don't follow the literary side of the Star Trek empire, Shatner co-wrote some Next Generation books where Kirk gets resurrected by Borg nanotechnology, but somehow escapes their influence and is happily living in the Next Gen timeframe.

Yup, and those books he did with the Reeves-Stevenses did a respectable job of tying the new plotlines into the existing canon/continuity. Also, in a retroactive way, explaining a lot of the outstanding questions and unknowns of the Trek universe. One thing was pretty clear tho - while Kirk probably contributed to the plot somewhat, the books were really the Reeves-Stevenses with his name stamped on them.

IIRC Shatner has been trying for years to get Paramount to make his books part of the ST Canon (like the Star Wars books are), and possibly made into movies.

The con man "dad" on Psych is played by Henry Winkler.

No, that's not Psych, that's NCIS.
And that's not Henry Winkler, it's Robert Wagner.

Back in the day, I had one of his records that I would literally put on to get rid of guests that wouldn’t take the hint and leave.

His version of “Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds” got rid of them every time!

this world is so screwed and mixed up....the bulky image of Shatner making $600,000,000 for those stupid commercials is beyond comprehension....

oh sure....its a free market....and people will pay for what they want whatever the market will bear...

but 99.99999% of people don't even get a chance...not an audition...not a tryout....nothing...

its seems the riches keep circling around in the "elite" groups and if you're not part of it, forget it...

He didn’t get paid $600,000,000. He was paid with stock that could have ended up being worth $0. Risk & Reward.

Try Hotwire. You may end up paying a little extra but the secret hotels list amenities and sometimes customer reviews.

The best part of Hotwire is their customer service. I reserved a room for one of our employees through Hotwire and it turned out the hotel actually didn't have any rooms available. A customer service rep called me and told me of the error, found another hotel room for our employee and refunded the entire purchase amount.

The same thing happened with another employee when I booked a room through Price Line. I didn't know about it until the employee showed up at the hotel and they told him there were no rooms available. I called Price Line, was on hold for at least 20 minutes, had to explain the situation to 3 different people, and ended up having to find another hotel with no help from them. All the while my employee had to wait about an hour and then drive to another hotel after he had been working and driving all day. I hate dealing with them and refuse to unless I have no other choice. With Hotwire you deal with one person, they actually care about problems, and best of all English is their first language.
