Its a tough time for hundreds of coal miners across southwest Virginia.

That's because they're getting pink slips from A & G Coal, which is owned by Southern Coal Company.

Mark Whooten is a spokesman for Southern Coal. He told News 5 who made the decision. "These layoffs are a decision by our corporate headquarters. They are market driven due to metallurgical coal market fluctuating violently at the present time."

The company wouldn't tell us how many jobs they have cut, but we do know its sizeable according to the manager of the local employment office, Gary Hale. "On Monday we saw approximately about 92 folks that visited the office."

***The article says it’s metallurgical coal, not bituminous coal.***

I know the difference between Bituminus, sub-bituminus, anthricite and lignite.

But what is metallurgical coal?

The more I see the claim that the country deserves the government they get, the more I believe it. I feel no sympathy or rage now...I know longer feel American either; just some throwback from years ago.

May they all rot in the situation they brought this country to.

My guess is the drop in the demand for metallurgical coal is from China.

"Wait until we can’t even afford our electric bills."

O or his handlers planned all this to happen. It is working perfectly for them and him.

He wanted to end coal power, he wanted to end health care in the hands of individuals, he planned to divide the country and has worked for all those goals.
It is working, and when he wins again and SCOTUS is under his control we are done as a republic the founders wanted and planned for us.

Is the Dairy Queen still around in Pearisburg? LOL My first wife was born in Blacksburg and raised in Ripplemead I think was the name in the 1960’s. When we’d go see her folks first stop was the Dairy Queen in Pearisburg.

I don’t get to Pearisburg often, but I’m pretty sure I saw the DQ on Main St. the last time we passed through there.

Metallurgical coal is low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal. In particular, it should be low in phosphorous and sulfur. It’s usually converted to metallurgical coke by heating in an sealed oven to drive off the volatiles.

The resulting coke is used in blast furnaces as a reducing agent and fuel. The low phosphorous and low sulfur contents are desirable to avoid contaminating the pig iron.

“Virginia was won by Democratic nominee Barack Obama by a 6.3% margin of victory.” Does anything else need to be said?

The stinking blue-bellies in NoVa and Richmond probably don't even know that coal is mined in Virginia, or that they directly benefit from that coal. They just wanna be "green".

***Metallurgical coal is low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal***

What is the average BTU/LB of this coal? We used 8400 Btu Wyoming coal in our power plant. Low ash, low sulfur sub-bituminous.

I use a high BTU Oklahoma coal in my blacksmithing work.
