With Mitt in the lead, anti-Romney Republicans weigh their options
The Hill ^ | February 4, 2012 | Niall Stanage

Those who continue to believe that Romney can be stopped are focused — as is the campaign of Newt Gingrich — on the possibility of a long delegate fight. They have largely given up hope of anyone winning a knockout victory over Romney, hoping instead that some other candidate can prevent the former Massachusetts governor from wrapping the race up before the Republican National Convention, which is set for Tampa, Fla., in late August.

“We have never gone through a delegate fight like this,” said Bob Vander Plaats, an influential conservative and the head of the Iowa-based Family Leader organization. “You need around 600 delegates to win, and I think that will be very difficult for Gov. Romney.”

Vander Plaats added that the reason Gingrich has been emphasizing that there are 46 states to go in the contest is because “he can do the math”.

Similar themes are sounded by prominent conservatives in the media. Erick Erickson of Red State wrote Thursday that the fact that many states award their delegates proportionally, rather than on a winner-take-all basis, could play to Gingrich’s advantage.

“If Gingrich is serious about staying in till the convention, he could deny Romney a first ballot win and spare the base from the man they don’t like, even if Newt himself cannot get the nomination. He is more of a long shot today than he was a day before Florida, but he can still be the nominee,” Erickson wrote.

If Romney is the Republican candidate, I will stay home on election day. There is no difference between him and Obama.

Don't stay home. If you want to leave the selection for president blank, that is your privilege. However think about that we must not just take the Senate back, and not just by a majority, but the Super majority, plus adding more seats to the House. Think about what we can do

Fascinating strategy...

Since conservatives are unable to coalesce around a single candidate, why noy just vote for Gingrich, Paul or Santorum (take your pick) for the purpose of denying Romney the needed number of delegates heading in to Tampa?

Staying home won’t solve the problem, neither will it prevent Romney from steamrolling to the nomination. However, VOTING AGAINST HIM will atleast improve our chances of forcing a floor-fight at the convention.

What say you?

I think it’s ridiculous to ask for Santorum to drop out. We still have a long way to go.

You have to be registered to vote in TN period. I did one time a write-in vote for a candidate for a local office and I registered in Tennessee as Republican in 1979

The party is much more than splintered already, it is almost balkanized.

Amen, that is where the last election left us.

What you think is possible and having Rick Sanotrumon the ticket could persuade some Freepers to reluctantly vote for Romney.

I’m of the opinion that we need to deny Romney a majority of delegates before the convention. If the convention deadlocks, someone else will have to be chosen. Newt Gingrich can’t do this alone, but if he, Santorum, and others can garner enough delegates to deny Romney a majority, we can shape things in our direction.

"The makers of our constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness... They sought to protect Americans in their beliefs, their thoughts, their emotions and their sensations. They conferred, as against the government, the right to be let alone -- the most comprehensive of the rights and the right most valued by civilized men."

Justice Louis Brandeis, Olmstead v US, 1928.

Regarding VA, some display of contempt for excluding Newt and Rick by voting for Paul would send a good message.

You have a great point there. Being a no-show would not be good, and we need to make some local changes, too.

No it would not and if everyone would think like that, not only would that arrogant, lazy lying pos occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave get reelected, the rats the House back and increase their majority in the Senat

I don’t think Romney would be a bit better than what we already have, but changes in Congress could make a world of difference.

Because only Romney and Paul are on the primary ballot in Virginia. Hence, the vote for Paul.

I WILL NOT vote for Romney even if Palin was his veep.

Ditto. The VP does NOT change the fact that Slick Willie Romnuts is still pro-sodomite and pro-death. No vote for Romney under my roof...death before dishonor.

You obviously haven't the slightest idea what Obama is.

I guess you'll have to educate me. On what issue would Mitt Romney adopt a position that is substantially different than Obama? As governor, Mitt Romney was a liberal governor, in other words, a Rockefeller Republican. Rockefeller Republicans occupy the liberal end of the spectrum, not the moderate portion.

Great! Get back to me if you find out more about the petition. Perhaps a link I can ping VA Freepers to. In TN they can write in and the votes are counted.

In Tennessee they are and some other states also

Not so. In Tennessee a candidate must be pre qualified to be eligible for write in, in the primary. In the general election , you may vote for Mickey Mouse if you like

I don’t know why Newt would not be on the ballot in some counties. In Tennessee one must be pre qualified to be written in ,in the primary. Newt meets that requirement as far as I know
