Twenty-two passengers on Carnival Splendor were robbed at gunpoint Thursday while on a ship-sponsored tour in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
At least one Mexican media outlet said the passengers were returning by bus to their ship at approximately 5 p.m. after spending time in El Nogalito, a tourist area known for its lush natural setting. Masked assailants stopped the bus and robbed the cruisers of their money, watches, cameras and other valuables.

If you ever get the chance, the smaller islands of the Bahamas are heaven.
Haiti would be my #1, because you certainly don't want to roll through there without your column of USMC AmTracs and LAV-25s if you go out of sight of your LHD.

My sister and her husband and occasionally the grown kids go to PV frequently. She thinks she knows everything, when I once asked her about the safety issue now in Mexico, she says “oh, its’ perfectly safe where we go”........keep thinking that sweetheart.
As a follow-up to my previous post, my brother-in-law is from Honduras and they would usually vacation there once a year. Honduras has now become so dangerous that they won’t ever go back. He even has a half brother whose family finally left and is now living in Texas (legally).....
Visited Lake Chapala/Ajijic several times and it was like paradise, never felt threatened. However, there were armed federales in the heart of Guadalajara and the town of Tequila — but no problems.
Been to Bahamas twice on Carnival and had wonderful time. Going to Cozumel and the Caymans in May on Carnival and not worried in the least. I always avoid the planned land tours, just don’t like traveling in herds.
Shoo the free range chickens off the beach and it ain't bad.

Just book an ALASKAN cruise. I’ve never been, but everyone says the scenery is SPECTACULAR and far and away better than Carribean cruises
There are cruises that do the islands of Hawaii too. We do not cruise but have friends that do. They say that cruise is magnificent.
Have been all over the Hawaiian islands but not cruise style. We own property just south of Hilo on the Big Island.
Wow, you have to read through all the comments on that story at msnbc. I’m amazed that they’ve left them up. Nearly all are scathingly against Mehico and jug ears Obumba. I would have thought that NBC would have filtered or pulled almost all of them.
Some NBC website worker is going to get canned for not pulling the conservative comments.

You don’t have to wait 5 more years, a lot of cities here are already like Mexico. Here in Northern California we have East Oakland, South San Jose and Stockton to contribute to the list. Black or Mexican ghetto, take your pick.
We chose this particular cruise because it’s a Christian music themed cruise. It’s a good fit for both the adults & teens in our group. We may still go, but I’ll just be quite firm that none of my kids will be going into Mexico. I’ve traveled in Mexico and I’d like them to be able to see first hand what I’ve described. Not now, though.

Totally, but it depends.
I went on a Hawaiian cruise with my Dad and his two sisters. It was wonderful. But rather than go on those expensive, silly tourist junkets at each stop, I had a rented car either waiting at the pier or take us to the main office. We all had such a wonderful time doing “our own thing” outside the expensive tourist crap.
We were well-read on what we were going to see at each stop.
Kingston was the only place I ever went that the ship's company wanted to leave 30 minutes after arriving and no one had stepped ashore. Some of us seriously considered raiding the landing force locker for side arms, shotguns, and Tommy Guns to make it to the end of the pier alive.
The place our DD had tied-up was in the worst area of Kingston — and that was saying something based on Kingston's already seedy and dangerous reputation. A group of us actually went ashore, but we rented a taxi to go to a bar in the mountains overlooking the port. At least we were relatively safe there and the beers were cold. The crew was very relieved to get underway at 0630 Monday morning.
That's the one we want. Looking in to it right now.
I want to stand at the end of the runway and feel the jet blast hurl me into the ocean. :^)
I just got back from a week in PV, and watched the ship sail in that day.
I think the ship’s tours are targets of opportunities. Make your own arrangement, and fly under the radar.
