Santorum on Obama Pushing College for All Americans: "What a Snob"
Townhall.com ^ | February 25, 2012 | Erica Johnson

Well said, Santorum -- well said. At a campaign stop in Michigan on Saturday morning:

Santorum On Obama 'What A Snob'

"Not all folks are gifted in the same way. Some people have incredible gifts with their hands... and want to work out there making things. President Obama once said, he wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob. There are good decent men and women, who go out everyday to put their skills to test that aren't taught by some liberal college professor trying to indoctrinate them. Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college -- he wants to remake you in his image. I want to create jobs so people can remake their children into their image, not his."

...so President Teleprompter has nothing to be snobbish about.

It's called "high self-esteem for no apparent reason."

I can go a step beyond this to evade most of college, and its debt, for many people.

Have major corporations and even industries create a curriculum for their employees. It is simplicity itself.

They advise all applicants that there is a *limited* number of specific courses that they must take and pass to apply to work for them, and that they hire for these *courses* only, not entire degrees. The rest of the degree is on their time and dime if they want the whole thing.

And, if students take the courses they demand and are hired, the percent of those loans they took for just those courses will be paid back by the company over the course of years employed.

Importantly, there is no guarantee of employment by a particular company, but a good likelihood of employment by somebody in the industry.

Since universities demand a lot of worthless lower division classes and prerequisites, the industry can subcontract for a few classes that fill in those blanks.

Accreditation agencies like North Central assume students must take entire majors and earn degrees, but corporations can be indifferent to accreditation, as long as students can pass the industry tests.

Microsoft already does something like this, to get MS Certified Engineers. Even if a person has just graduated from elementary school, if they can pass the MSCE, they *are* an MSCE.

Bottom line: this kills off much of the “paper chase”, and saves students a huge amount of money, as well as letting them get two more years of gainful employment right when they are most productive.

I agree. It has bugged me for some time that the GOP and their candidates basically ignore blue collar workers anymore. They always seem to focus on Big Business issues 100% and just think that these voters will just follow along. At least Rick is addressing issues like manufacturing and traditional values that matter to these voters. From what I can see, his message is resonating opening up a whole new source of votes to the GOP.

Are you a Newt, Paul or Romney supporter?

“From what I can see, his message is resonating opening up a whole new source of votes to the GOP.”

That is my take as well and one of the reason I believe Santorum to be a much stronger General Election Candidate than Gingrich.

As a former academic, I say. But of course. Colleges now sucker parents to send their kids to college expecting to fleece the parents of a year of expenses and/or leave the kid in hock for ten thousand dollars or more in federal or other loans. They do this in full knowledge that the kids has about as much change of graduating as he does playing in the NFL. Vocational education has been shortchanged, largely because so few in public education have any idea of how to make it work. But apart from that, the shop classes that used to teach suburban kids which end of a hammer to hold has disappeared. This despite the need in an age where simple repairs cost a minimum of $50.00 an hour.

If someone studies engineering or some other technical topic in college, are they really being "indoctrinated"?

Other than that I agree with a lot of what Santorum is saying.

Don’t forget, people who are essentially in debt bondage to the Government are far easier to control...

An excellent point. The Obama Administration no doubt looks on college employees (especially public ones) as a key constituency. Nudging more people into college keeps that constituency afloat. And (as RS said), it serves to indoctrinate the students. It also loads them down with debt, which makes them all the more radical and angry when they can’t find jobs with their Sociology degree. For the Libs, its a win/win all around.

Depends, I see a lot of beginning "eco engineering" type stuff going on at our local community college but more of the technical stuff is good. We'll always need good college educated people to help advance us into the future but we need builders too.

Just about anything that “everybody” has, is by definition, devalued. The value of a college degree was that it set the person apart from “everybody”. Give everybody a million dollars and it won’t mean much to be a millionaire. But we don’t expect Obama to understand basic supply and demand.

Yes because they get attached to lefty college girls if they are guys. Ask me about my engineer son who married someone who hates America and whose mother is a big deal in the ACLU and who just recently decided he was not exciting enough for her and so she is going “home” to the Bay Area of California, leaving him wondering what happened.

Anybody who wants to go to college and willing to do the school work there can probably find a way. Not all want to nor should those people be hectored into it. There is room for all kinds. In high school one of my social studies teachers actually said he had an ethical problem advising someone how to become a millionaire, because it might well involve dropping out of school!!

College could be valuable were it not for the mandatory courses where tenured leftists get a crack at indoctrinating you. Having run that gauntlet in pursuit of a hard science degreem I’ve come to the conclusion that a college education today isn’t nearly all it’s cracked up to be.

Could it be an attempt of elitists to turn America into the white college utopia described in Mega Trends, a best seller in the 80s?

It happened much sooner than that.
I remember commuting with an avowed communist in the early 60s, not too long before all smokestack industries and manufacturing of everything that was excellent began to move overseas.
I recall replying in many discussions that I could not conceive of the U.S. (or any country, for that matter) existing very long as a totally "service" society.

We have confirmed in the worst way possible that an economically healthy society cannot exist without the actual creation of wealth and useful manufactured products.

Of course, the unions couldn't care less, being the new privileged economic aristocracy.

Just goes to show us that even having the brains and expending the effort required for achieving a useful degree does not prevent human beings from choosing poorly...

a snob?

yes he appears to be a snob....he acts the part well....

when he refuses to show his grades...and the only reason he passed his classes is because the leftist professors would NEVER FAIL A BLACK MAN!

so President Teleprompter has nothing to be snobbish about.

If my information about the origin of the term “snob” is correct - and I admit that I have seen it contradicted - it derives from "s. nob” which was an abbreviation for “sans nobility” i.e., without title. Commoners who gained admittance to elite institutions had an inferiority complex because they were thorn in with children of nobility - and tended to compensate by putting on airs precisely because they had nothing to brag about.

I went to Bowdoin in the '60's. UMass was a joke even then. Not that Bowdoin didn't turn into one, but yeah, the east coast needs a flush with Drano.
