Jeb Bush calls it an unbelievable scenario. Karl Rove says life on Pluto is more likely.
Still, national Republican Party officials and attorneys are quietly preparing for a prospect that no longer looks inconceivable: By the time thousands of Republicans converge for their convention Aug. 27-30 at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, they will not have a nominee.
"Everybody that says they've got a crystal ball about the 2012 presidential election should have their head examined," said Phil Musser, a Republican strategist supporting Mitt Romney. "There have been more loops in this race than the roller coaster at Space Mountain, so for anyone to say unequivocally that we couldn't have a convention laced with drama strikes me as premature."
Take a tumultuous campaign for the Republican nomination where the normal political laws of momentum aren't playing out. Add in a primary schedule designed to prolong the contest and new campaign finance laws enabling rich individuals to keep financially strapped campaigns afloat indefinitely. It creates the clearest path to a contested convention in decades.
"Everybody keeps saying it's impossible, but we know it's possible," said Al Cardenas, president of the American Conservative Union and former Florida GOP chairman, of the prospect for a wild and unscripted Tampa convention. "It's possible no one has enough delegates to win the nomination and then all it takes is that person not to be able to coalesce with someone else to put them over the top."

But with their chosen candidate Mitt getting little more than 17 to 19 percent acceptance, they have a very BIG problem on their hands. All I can say is, I'm very very happy to see it. Romney is the lousiest 'republican' they could possibly have chosen to support.
It is a mess.
Even if they come to a firm agreement who the candidate should be, they have, at most, two months to sell him to the American people and rout Obama.
All because the establishment didn’t want a real Republican.
Has anybody whispered the name, “Sarah Palin” yet?
I'd like to see her as president, but that's as likely as my walking to the moon by Monday morning.
Sarah Palin might be brought up...but I don’t think she could even whip up a majority of enthusiasm.
This 52-week period of forums and debates....probably has done more damage than people think. Everyone has come to decide that they can’t support fully any of the guys running. I would make a rule after that 2012, that no full-up campaigning should occur until the summer before the primary season, and no debates should occur until September...with a limit of four debates before the first primary.
No, but each day an article appears throwing Jeb Bush’s name around.
I have been saying that I would vote for Mark Levin’s proverbial orange juice can versus Zer0. I would never vote for Zer0 but it would be really hard to pull the lever for Jeb, especially if he is forced upon us.
I think it would be EXTREMELY hard for the average Republican voter to get behind a THIRD Bush. That family has done enough damage to the reputation of the name 'Republican' to last for then next 100 years.
I think Jeb is the best of the Bush Clan, but I can't disagree. Let him be a Florida senator for the next 30 years, cabinet member, or anything else. But not president.
“She is literally ‘political poison’ that media will exploit to the fullest extent to belittle the GOP.”
Let me see if I can put this into words.
As the propaganda wing of the left, the lamestream misleadia create that narrative about every Stupid Party candidate except the weakest one. Parsed, it boils down to this: “If you nominate that candidate we will shriek lies like banshees from every rooftop. We will not be restrained by common decency or any consideration for the truth. No, you had better nominate this other candidate instead, because that one is ‘political poison.’”
The Stupid Party falls for that again and again, like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, but even when they have nominated the weakest candidate, the one who was not called ‘political poison,’ the despicable scoundrels of the misleadia shriek lies like banshees from every rooftop, unconstrained by common decency or any consideration for the truth.
It is long past time for those of us not suffering from leftard disorder to stop falling for that ruse. It is time for us to nominate a good candidate for the first time since Reagan, and figure out how to beat the misleadia and the left at smashmouth campaigning.
“I’d like to see her as president, but that’s as likely as my walking to the moon by Monday morning.”
That’s what they said about Reagan.
I agree. She would be a good president i think but she will motivate the left more than anything else. They despise her because they fear her. Ryan. Daniels. One of them. I can hope, can’t i?
Oh, goody! Can't wait to see the hundreds of fans outside the convention waiting to see white smoke from the chimney.
NEWT = $2.50 PER GAL
Newt is the only one with the qualifications and the power to do anything. The rest will be willing puppets for the Democrats (RINO’s)in the Republican party
Jeb will never be a Fl senator. He has to be top dog.
If conservatives want to win this thing in a brokered convention in Tampa, it's going to mean marginalizing Jeb Bush and other now-come-out RINOs. Jeb was a decent enough governor, but let's be clear: He poses a major threat, a more competent threat to conservative interest than that dish* romney does.
I’m hoping for a brokered convention too.
First reason is kinda selfish; I want the GOP-E to have major egg on their face and see the error of their ways in choosing Romnuts, an unelectable, unethical liberal. Do they not realize that the more people get to know plastic man, the more they dislike him?
Second, a brokered convention could help Newt.
Talk amongst yourselves.
Oh, and for the naysayers like my RNC friend who says that to not support Romney is to reelect Bam..I say Bam will probably be relected anyway and shame on them for trying to shove a crap**y candidate down our throats.
There's that word again.
Maybe the GOPe should just co-nominate Ubama to make sure that their establishment-insider boat doesn’t get rocked.
