"Morning, y'all." Romney seeks acceptance in South

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is laying it on as thick as a syrupy Southern drawl as he tries to court the South, a region that has been unkind to him in the past and may soon turn its back on him again.

"Morning, y'all," Romney told a campaign rally on Friday in Jackson, Mississippi. "I got started this morning right with a biscuit and some cheesy grits," he joked.

The former Massachusetts governor is admittedly the underdog in Mississippi and Alabama, two stalwarts of the Old South where Republicans vote in primaries on Tuesday to decide which candidate they think should challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

-snip-

"I realize it's a bit of an away game," Romney told Birmingham radio state WAPI on Thursday, referring to his chances in the South.

His troubles in the South reflect lingering suspicions about the depth of his conservative views. As a former governor of a heavily Democratic state he is seen as more of a moderate.

Texas accent....that’s something I’ve always had trouble with. No disrepect, I have scads of deep south Georgia relatives that have accents that would shame the posers in Driving Miss Daisy, but I’m clueless on the Texas differences...Can you elaborate? Thanks.

Can you imagine what it would be like if some real Southerner tried to campaign in New England with a faked Bostonian accent??

Mitt might as well have worn a hat with the price tag hanging off of it and greeted the crowd with a big “How-dee!”

Let’s face it, everybody has “y’all” envy...

When I’m trying to remember a Texas accent, I just imagine Joe Bob Briggs, Tommy Lee Jones and that guy from Slingblade, (also has three names, Billy Bob Thornton?) all having a conversation about the band Tres Hombres.
I imagine Mitt sounded something like: “Good morning .. you-all” (beep beep beep) .....

Ain’t nothin wors’n a dang carpetbagger comin down South’n try’n to sound Suth’n.

Whether it’s “No waze tired” or any other attempt, if’n you ain’t Suth’n any try’n to speak Suth’n will sound FAKE.

Gosh—it’s hard to put in writing the way we tawk!

We certainly use the pronoun “Y’ALL” (pronounced YAWL)—a lot. Many times, we drop the last letter in a word—we say “puddin” instead of pudding or “nuthin” for nothing, for instance.

Of course, there are regional accents within the state. My accent is mostly southeast-or Piney Woods Texan.

Maybe some other Texan will chime in here to add somethin’....LOL!

Well, I’ve certainly had to use words like ‘mater’ for tomatoes, and drop the ‘g’ from ‘ing’ words with my relatives and where I now live. I was just wondering if there were any specific regional peculiarities re: Texas that we Georgians don’t use.

Not germain, but something I like to reckon to Texas is guns and civilians....an online video about a store in Texas and a bunch of shoppers hearing a car backfire outside. Before you know it, they’ve ALL drawn their big caliber weapons lookin’ to smoke the perp.....anything like that?

"Hi there y'all. My name is Mitt Romney and I'm fixin' to be y'all president. Now Ann and I, we jus' plain ole folks from over up yonder in Massachusetts. Don't y'all be confusing us with all them city slickers up there. No sir! When I was governah up there, I went ahead and set those yankees straight. Why I was jus' tellin' Ann at the Waffle House this morning the story of how I almost run Ted Kennedy over with my pickup truck..."

My dad’s second wife grew up in Texas. She never said “y’all”, but I got to know and love that accent. Met a guy on a plane once, we spoke briefly and I said to him “you’re from Texas, aren’t you?” He was, LOL.
