Being in the media, I have no friends, as it should be. If I did, however, 3 of 10 Republicans would surely take offense to this column, since it points out what is increasingly obvious to everyone but Mitt Romneys 30 percent base of support: Mitt wont beat Barack Obama.
Should Romney become the GOP nominee - likely, but not certain - he will have a difficult time unseating the President. Can he win? Given the stagnant economy, high unemployment, and skyrocketing gas prices, yes. But will he? No.
Since many Republicans are calling this election the most important in history, its worth a look at why Romney will fall short:
1) He cannot relate. Nominating Romney would be par for the course for a GOP that likes to elevate stiff, out-of-touch pols who cant relate to most Americans. John McCain, Bob Dole, and George Bush I (after he acted like he had better things to do than campaign for reelection) are prime examples.
Of course, it is rare for an incumbent president to lose, which occurred only four times in the 20th century. But in those instances, sitting presidents lost to charismatic leaders articulating bold visions. Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton achieved success over Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush, because, more than anything, they were extremely effective communicators, speaking from the heart rather than a script. There was a widespread perception among Americans that these candidates were talking directly to them - that they were leaders who innately understood what the problems were, and how to solve them.
On a scale of one to 10, Romneys ability in this regard is zero. Not only is he unable to relate, but when he tries, things gets worse...

I’d rather vote for President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho than Romney.
I encourage all to write to their congressman, state and national GOP chairs and tell them that you will not vote for Mitt Romney under any circumstances.
Ditto that...but most people are too busy keyboard-grumbling to get around to that. Might want to try a gimmick: "Submit a brief essay entitled 'Why I Won't Vote for Romney' and win a week's subscription to the pay site of your choice!" Contest rules require a copy to be sent to the GOP poobahs.
I'll vote for Romney too, but first I gotta wait for the monkeys...
It’s ok. Obama would love to have him as VP.
Mitt may not be our panacea, but “O” and his czars and federal regulators could get totally out of control in a 2nd term.
Maybe a few weeks ago. Not today.
Mitt to 0bamao ” I got your back, bro”
Who is your alternative?
Its Obama or Romney at this point. Choose your poison.
Not by me. I plan to do the same thing.
If Holder shuts down the voter ID laws (he's got 2 already), election fraud alone would be enough to re-elect Obama, so why should we be blamed for his malfeasance?
Camacho would do a better job than Zer0.
If Mittens gets the nomination, I’m leaving the Republicant party and going elsewhere. They push no-win candidates down our throats, so I’ll shove it back up their @$$.
Its too late at this point for that to do any good. Its a numbers game and all they care about are the totals. Perhaps if 2 million people wrote it would help. A few thousand doesn’t even make it on the radar.
Right with you. When it comes down to it, Anybody but Obama! I like Santorum, but I will vote for Romney. Do we want to completely destroy this country with another 4 years of B.O.? It seems to me the liberal nuts are starting to feel very uneasy. It is quite evident on facebook. This article is another hit piece, as far as I can tell. Let us try to turn conservatives off Romney. No, will not happen. ANYBODY BUT OBAMA!
“I dunno. FR can be a bit of an echo chamber at times. A lot of folks that I talk with, work with, are friends with, that lean right have an ABO mantra: Anybody but Obama.”
Here in the blue part of Ohio, Romney is a very viable alternative to Obama. They like Obama, they don’t like Romney. But, people are hurting, and when it comes to competence, Romney is seen as significantly better.
Sorry folks, Romney is the heir apparent. Either get on board, or enjoy the next train to Obamaville!
Romney or Gingrich either one will win easily, the only shot we have at losing this thing is Rick Santorum.
Since it is all about your inflated sense of selfish “Pride”, you would then be proud to watch Obama complete his mission, unchecked and unopposed, since the Dems will likely take back the House and increase their grip on the Senate. (Which always happens when a decisive party victory wins the POTUS)
ENJOY! You can say you helped make it happen!
Take the early GOP Primaries away from the Northeast. The likelyhood of them endorsing a Conservative is rather low. Imagine the media having to report a Conservative winning for the first 10 Primaries.
It's worse than this. Obama's disastrous administration is quickly approaching the disastrous administration of Lyndon Baines Johnson, a man I regard as the worst president this country has ever produced. Like LBJ before him, Obama's policies will continue to bring catastrophe on this nation for generations, long after he has left office.
If I had my choice, Rick Perry would be steamrolling across the country right now. This didn't happen. If I had my second choice, anyone but Romney would be steamrolling across the country right now. This is not happening. But I do know this: Obama has got to go. This man is an absolute disaster.
