Bakery protest turns violent after clash over cookies

A labor protest at a historic Seattle bakery turned violent Saturday and police were called when demonstrators clashed with patrons outside. More than 80 protestors from the Seattle Solidarity Network, also known as SeaSol, picketed outside of Borracchini's Bakery in the Rainier Valley as part of a planned protest against the owner, Remo Borracchini.

Hundreds of customers arrived in advance of the protest and launched a counter demonstration. Supporters wore red, white and green ribbons in honor of the bakery's Italian roots.

Fights broke out among patrons and protestors after a customer offered cookies to one of the demonstrators, a bakery employee said. According to witnesses, a female member of SeaSol hit the plate of cookies out of his hands then slapped him during an argument, and the man pushed her to the ground.

A spokesperson for SeaSol said the woman was punched in the face, but KIRO-FM was not able to corroborate that statement. She received medical attention at the scene, but no arrests were made.

Seattle Solidarity launched a campaign against the bakery after a former employee claimed she was not allowed to take breaks during her nine years with the business. They have threatened to increase their involvement if the bakery does not pay her $7,901. The group has provided three letters they say are from former employees who describe a similar work environment.

Remo Borracchini and current employees have denied the group's accusations. A store manager showed KIRO-FM surveillance video of the employee taking breaks.

It is RACIST to hold Eric Holder’s people to the same standards of behavior as normal human beings.

It’s all fun and games until someone tosses their cookies.

I think we are entering a period of civil war, between civilization and those who wish to end civilization.

This is why I left Seattle for coastal Georgia last year. Soon there will be armed militias, night riders and conditions similar to the former Yugoslavia.

They are demonstrating because someone wasn't allowed to steal?

This is why the U.S. is essentially doomed. People now actually believe they have the right to steal from an employer.

Just another day of life in the blue states.

The biggest problem with this whole civil war thing is that it will be between people who care little about much versus those who have a lot to lose. Equalization during or after civil war results in those having a lot to lose, losing much or all of it, and those who don’t, not gaining much at all, if at all, but hoping they would. So who wants to start the fight? That’s easy to answer.

How is taking a break stealing? Most jobs allow for it. Usually a 15 minute one in the morning and one again in the afternoon so the employee can use the bathroom, drink some coffee and just rest a minute. Most ever job I have ever held, esp the union ones had 15 minute breaks. The boss even asked you take them because it “renews” or “refreshes” the employee. Some bosses I worked for had the coffee machine full all day just for this.

Now if she was stealing cookies that is another story!

How compassionate of SeaSol to violently step in to protect the rights of workers since there is no Human Rights Commission, Fair Labor Standards Act, Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration (WISHA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Labor Relations Board, state work place regulations, unions (Washington is NOT a right to work state) or any federal state or local agencies, or labor lawyers or favorable legal forums for this poor employee to bring her grievances to. The liberals continue to shriek for more government regulation without mentioning or noticing that all of the past “cure-all” regulation they vociferiousy lobbied for is impotent!
