It was illegal in New York, but thanks to lax gun laws in other states and Washington, the formidable weapon is a life-threatening commonplace in the hands of violent thugs like Foxworth.
He also had something much worse which he could easily have grabbed if things had played out differently. Cops found in his apartment a sawed-off Ruger Mini-14 military-style semiautomatic rifle.
This weapons killing power is well known. Sometimes called the poor mans assault rifle, the Mini-14 was reportedly the weapon of choice of Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian mass murderer who shot 69 mostly young people to death last summer.
The NYPD said the Ruger is so powerful, it could have pierced the ballistics shield carried by the first officer through Foxworths door.
A firearm this potent should be banned everywhere in the United States. No exceptions. But the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004, and gutless congressmen under the sway of the National Rifle Association have failed to re-up it.

Such BS, and the reader will believe it.
A Mini-14 is an arsenal? Stupid MSM.
LMFAO! Oh My GOD! Where's that media reference graphic where everything is an AK47?
Poor man’s assault rifle my aXX. Cheapest I have seen is $600 all the way up to $1000. Not cheap enough for me.
Where are these Bleeding heart liberals when it comes to prosecuting and incarcerating these criminals?
for 600 bucks you could pick up a brand new sks and deck it out to look like something that would throw the libs into a tizzy....
Sure enough, the .223 is practically a cannon — if you are a prairie dog.
The willful ignorance of the press once again manages to exceed my expectations.
We’ll stick with our pair of AR-15 rifles when the dogs bark in the night. My other option would be the M1A, but I think it is overkill when your range is under a hundred yards.
Your mileage may vary...
Their heads would have exploded if he had been armed with a real rifle.
Before the boating accident, I had a Mini-14. If I had sawed off the barrel, would it have turned into an awesome killing machine? Maybe the .223 would have magically turned into an evil 50 cal?
Isn’t it ILLEGAL to use .223 for hunting? Not sufficient knock-down, or something?
The early 70s version Colt SP-1 I have is exactly like the original AR-15s shipped to the AF for Vietnam in 69. No forward assist or case deflector, semi-only...barrel has a 1/12 twist...slow turner - ammo tends to tumble once it hits vegetation. Meant to incapacitate the enemy forcing them to divert resources... I don’t know what an SS-109 would do with a ‘shield’ or vest, honestly. But, I do know what a 30-06 black tip will do.
Depends on the state. Here in WV, it’s perfectly legal to hunt deer with a .223.
But, I’ll agree to a total ban on firearms as long as there are NO government or military exemptions. NONE AT ALL.
Until then, the Goverment can FOAD.
***Cheapest I have seen is $600 all the way up to $1000. Not cheap enough for me.****
I bought my first Mini-14 back in 1976 ($145.00) when they first came on the market. Nice rifle but needed lots of improvements.
Then you could not find one anywhere for several years as they were being bought by the French for their police force.
Nakwon... is this one of Holder’s peeps?
“A firearm this potent should be banned everywhere in the United States.”
More liberal nonsense from the Daily Snooze. Criminals can find similar weapons on the black market.
