We are the Free Republic Pre-War on Terror Class of Freepers.
Having been a freeper for over a decade, and having experienced both a pre 9/11 presence here and a post 9/11 presence, having experienced the Hanging Chad Wars of GW's first election, Sore Loserman and all, what stands out for you regarding the growth of Free Republic over the years.
What are your thoughts on the independence of Free Republic, and Jim Robinson's decision to go advertisement free all these years. My first thought is that his financial independence is what has freed him to tell the GOP-E to stick it in their ear this year.
If he had to worry about sponsors dropping him, or well-heeled pubbies supporting him, that might have intimidated a lesser man.
We've been blessed these many years. What stands out for you in your decades plus experience on Free Republic?
Heard about it on Rush during the Clinton Lewinsky events. Started lurking from the Drudge link. Signed up a few years later.
I also miss quidam. ~snicker~
November, 1997, when the internet finally arrived in west flyover. First stop was Drudge, and then started through the links. Spent about 3 hours on Free Republic that night, coming to the realization that I was not alone. Miss the flame wars, the banter, the WH basement corps, close your tags!, and so many long gone. Would probably still be lurking if not for a quick html primer by my TRT bud Labgrade (RIP.)
I send my regrets because I’m too old to attend a reunion this year. You all have a good time and then keep your comments to yourself because I may get a tear in my eye remembering all who have passed on to that great Free Republic in the sky. ;-)
I may even remember a few who were condemned to Zotland Hades.
A long time...
The smell of ozone as the Viking Kitties zot another troll...
Laz hitting everything in sight (”Stand aside, citizen, for I must hit that!”)...
Hugh and series...
SunkenCiv’s GGG and Catastrophism pinglists...
The one thing about this site, aside from the amazing amount of data, that keeps me coming back is the humor.
Wow! 1997.
Welcome home, grandpa!
I agree about the humor.
I don’t brew. I roast.
Some excellent Ethiopian Harar the other day.
:>)
Michael Rivero.
The list of the dear and departed is long indeed.
It seems like we started out wide and thin in interests and views opposing corruption, Clinton and the general left.
We now are deeper, but seeming to ever narrow.
I remember the Free Republic demonstration in Washington that C-Span somehow labeled “pro-Clinton”.
Late to the party but finally here!

It's these purges/self-purges. The kitchen of FR generates much heat....
This primary had nothing to do with that. The unabashed promotion of Mitt the Gay loving, Pro Abortion Candidate had everything to do with it. Fair warning was given if you didn't like it then you should have restrained yourselves and returned to high another day. Nothing says you have to post. I was a lurking reader, long before I jumped in.
Hear Here!
I much prefer the FR of 1998, before there WERE any mods, to the FR of today due to the things you mentioned and more!
Amen! Very much so!
NO!
Not now! Not ever! That is unvarnished HISTORY dear lady!
Thank you for your encouragement, dear Bigun!
ABSOLUTELY!
All points!
Bush v Gore, 2000
Free Republic is an American original.
Simply brilliant.
I prefer the FR I enjoyed years ago to the echo chamber it has become more recently.
I ALWAYS donated to the former but will not to the latter.
What do we accomplish when we are consumed with PREACHING to the choir?
Never mind. It was inappropriate for me to make that suggestion. But, I have not regretted what I have donated, even though I do not agree with all that goes on here. This is the best pplace and the quickest place to find th enews.
—This is the best pplace and the quickest place to find th enews.—
I agree, mainly on the sheer diversity of subjects.
Just checked myself and have been here since February 1, 2001. The best thing about this site is that it is independent as a conservative site.
Ooooh! I do like my coffee, but I refer to beer brewing.
Last weekend I brewed up a batch of what I call “Hearty American Ale” which is a lighter in color than pale-ale, but full-bodied, mildly hopped ale which goes quite well with the Lower Texas Springtime and Early Summer.
Summer is for hefe-weizen and my famous Blackberry Dunkle-Weizen. Oh yeah...
I signed up in Dec. 2000 under an old name. I FELLOW FREEPER. I forgot the password....LOL!
WOW...takes me back to the days of protesting with the likes of Race Bannon in front of Joe Lieberman’s house in New Haven, CT during the 2000 election.
Thank you Jim Robinson for starting FreeRepublic and giving us like-minded people a home to gather in.
please post a recipe with instructions in one of the chat forums
seriously!
” Wondering how much stuff Hillary stole when they carted her ass out...”
Plenty!
Now there’s a name I remember. Just tried going to your website and it was blocked by my company’s DearLeader filter. I’d consider that a complement.

LOL!
I’m A+bert.
Although I’m not of the class of 2001, or earlier as far as membership I was lurking in that era, regardless I wanted to add some food for thought for everyone on the matter of the advertisements on site.
The advertisers do have clout as to what will be presented at the site they advertise, and I do mean language, metaphors, pictures, etc.
If FR goes with advertisements the advertisers will demand their own code of language governing metaphors, innuendoes, pictures, etc.
In other words I fear we lose some of the personality that is FR if advertisers are accepted to the site.
Just a thought.
Me Too!
I think, that was THE DAY Drudge first posted about the "Stained Blue Dress"....
Best political site on the net. Period.
My story too! I subsequently joined under a different name, then dropped out after I graduated college in 2000. Lurked off and on for many years, but didn’t seek to post anything because I didn’t feel I had anything worth saying. Couldn’t recall the password to my old name and couldn’t find it anywhere when I rejoined, so I figure it must have been purged along the way.
I used to read all of Coyote’s posts. They were usually very long, but always were very educational. A lot of history about the left. I miss him.
And Michael Rivero’s tin foil threads were... Interesting. I bet he’s a 911 Truther these days.
I also miss the Smoky Back Room chat room here. It was awesome, there was a core group there, not many of us left now. :(
Whatever Jim wants for the site, I support it.
I agree. Advertisers will stink the place up and clutter it with junk and pop-ups.
No thank you!
I’m posting to see when my sign-on date was.
Funny. Moose bit my sister was one of my first thoughts too.
I'm good.
Besides the serious threads, I've especially enjoyed the fun ones, in particular, PJ-Comix's DUmmie FUnnies (of which I am the co-host), as well as the ongoing give-and-take with martin_fierro and mikrofon.
I fully support FR's "pro-life, pro-family, pro-limited government" conservative philosophy. At the same time, I recognize how good conservatives, equally holding to that same philosophy, may differ on strategy when it comes to the presidential election this fall. I believe it's a difference in strategy, not philosophy, that is at the heart of the recent difficulties here.
I used to browse Ldot at work (it always got through the internet filter where FR didn’t)...until the lovely morning when one of the ads on that site uploaded a virus (a phony virus-scanner, ironically) to my work PC. I was out of action for a day and a half until it could be cleared.
After that, it was FR all the time, filter be damned.

Good post, Charles.
I don’t know that we’ll all agree, but I do think we’ll survive.
Some pipsqueak like BarryO isn’t big enough to kill the spirit of this freeperland haven.
He’s a nerd, a doofus, a teleprompter ninny, a 57 state scholar, and Mooch lives off our dollar.
Nothing to fear there.
Don’t tread on us!
25 Sep 1998
Turned onto FR by Drudge;to Drudge by Mary Matalin.Recruited by Canteen and was active there for many years. Mostly lurk now.Went to DC with FR in Dec 98 where I was proud to meet JR.
A local friend of ours told us to look up Free Republic in ‘98 or ‘99. He was a lurker back then so we lurked until 2004. My husband printed out the Sore Loserman sign then enlarged it for use at local Freeps (Omaha)during the 2000 election. We got lots of comments and the occasional ‘bird’. Good times, good times.
I learned to post on FR and to this day, I can barely work any other board because they don’t work ‘right’ ;-)
