Following individual meetings this week with school and district administrators, each family waived their right to a hearing and agreed to one-year suspensions from school and regular bus transportation. The Greece Central School District is legally required to provide all students ages 5 to 16 with an education, therefore, during the 2012-13 school year, the students who have been suspended will be transferred to the district Reengagement Center, located in a non-school facility. This alternative education program keeps middle school students on track academically while providing a structured opportunity for students to take responsibility for their actions by completing community service hours and receiving formal instruction related to conduct and behavior that prepares them for a productive future. The program includes a strong parent involvement component.
Each student will be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens and will complete a formal program in bullying prevention, respect and responsibility. In accordance with district policy, if at 30 weeks into the school year the students have completed the conditions of their discipline and are in good standing at the Reengagement Center, they can apply for early readmission to Athena Middle School.
Too much, too little, or just enough? A year’s a stiff sentence for 10 or so minutes of verbal harassment, as nasty as it was, but the school district’s under immense pressure to be strict with the little cretins. And this incident’s playing out, of course, amid growing awareness culturally of how bad the effects of bullying can be. Crack down on this bunch and you send a national message given the spotlight on this case.
Because I know you’re wondering, the donations for Klein now stand north of $668,000. Per the Times, more than 30,000 people have contributed from all 50 states and 82 countries. Two days ago, she finally met the man who came up with the idea. Here’s the vid from WGRZ.
The only tack our ragged individualist Uncle could hope to logically take, is that such a job ought to be boycotted and thus force its masters to change it.
Perhaps our lady was a little naive to think that what it appeared to say — that her presence and a nice kind loving helping hand when needed would suffice — was realistic. But that’s really all. And he’s bent out of shape at $75/hour... for how many hours? It’s a pin money job but not much more than that in this lousy economy.
It’s called charity, bub. It’s been going on in this nation since its founding. Get used to it.

Maybe Uncle has a point, though, about what’s needed to do better. Even though the monitor is forbidden to do anything substantial, the kids do not need to know. Go to the local Hells Angels hall and whoever isn’t a convicted pedophile, offer them this $75/hour gig. Kids won’t dare mock or act up.
Still, this woman struck a chord with so many because she so epitomized the results of the problem with how youth are being brought up today. Which is almost all a parent failure which in turn is a failure of godliness.
He’s just pissed that he probably doesn’t make that much. IMO, $75 hr isn’t worth the crap she or any in her position deal with. He can make all the asinine comments he wants to but like you said, the reality is she is constrained from anything to maintain order. That’s the bottom line.
Because SOMEONE will get that job regardless.
So who is the bigger fool? The woman doing a job as best the law allows or some disgruntled twit on the net with an attitude problem, a case of envy and in inability to reason like an adult?
Should she not do the job as the law demands and be sued/jailed? Or should she quit and be unemployed because Jackwagon has a problem with it?
Uncle and logical thought are the two farthest opposing points of the universe.

What struck me first in the video (aside from the horrific attack) was her stoicism in the face of it. She was calmly sitting there, quietly answering the miserable thugs. I think that’s partly why people rallied to her defense. Plus, Americans do not like to see the elderly abused by wet-behind-the-ears teenage boys.
Those kids are probably mostly going home to empty houses so the time on the bus is considered a free-for-all with no consequences whatsoever.

I agree! This brouhaha did serve a great purpose. It showed there was a limit to how much of this nonsense the brats would be allowed to get away with. It’s part of the solution to the problem... still without godliness it’s like putting more nails in that Jello to try to get it to stay on the side of the tree.
Only thing, I’d say maybe it should be a team of one Hells Angel and one normal citizen, just to be sure that drug dealing doesn’t begin....

She just needed to do her job. She had the power to assign seats on the bus, she had the ability to speak and to correct the kids for their behavior, she had the power to write a disciplinary notice to the parents or the school administrators. Instead, she just sat there and did nothing and the school bus devolved to chaos.
Yeah, I knew them as “Indian Cigars.” Never attempted to smoke one, or anything else for that matter, not that my folks would have been uptight about it (Mom smoked, unfortunately smoking herself to death) but I never cared for the idea. But we had a catalpa tree in our back yard. I think if a brown one was actually lit, it would burn rapidly.
Produce records of the conditions of that position and maybe people will listen to you. Right now you are pulling all of that out your hind end with nothing more than vaporous farty supposition. You’re assuming common sense by the pubskewl, but the Ewe Essay has long abandoned it in that sphere and the evidence abounds. The vastly more probable case is that the attempts to do that would also get mocked at with no consequences to the brats. The incompetence can’t possibly be with her employers could it, if you hate incompetence so?
