Drudge tips Condi Rice for Mitt Romney veep pick. But is she too moderate and too tied to Bush?
The Telegraph ^ | 7/13/12 | Tim Stanley

On Thursday night, Mitt Romney sent out an email to supporters promising news on his Vice President selection “sometime soon.” A few hours later, the Drudge Report announced that Condi Rice – the former Secretary of State under George W Bush – was “near the top of the list.” I quote: “It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.” That’s it. But from small acorns are great headlines made.

Condi Rice would be a risky veep pick for Romney. It’s true that she’s experienced, respected and liked by establishment Republicans. But she has never won an election and she is associated with George W Bush – a man mildly less popular than arthritis. Her selection would widely be regarded as a desperate bid to reach out to both women and African-American voters, while probably not making an impact upon either.

Worst of all, Rice might split the base. There was some speculation in 2008 that she voted for Obama, and she can be best described as a libertarian on the moral issues that matter to religious conservatives. On abortion: “I don't like the government involved in these really hard moral decisions … While I don't think the country is ready for legislation to overturn Roe v. Wade, certainly I cannot imagine why one would be in favor of partial-birth abortion. I also can't imagine why one would take these decisions out of the hands of the family.” On gay marriage: “I don't ever want anybody to be denied rights within our country.” Selecting a woman with these views would only confirm the suspicion that Mitt is himself a Massachusetts moderate. He doesn’t need that kind of bad publicity.

I would still vote for Romney/Rice, but there is no way I would work for it or campaign for it. I consider a Romney/Rice ticket a sure loser so I’m not flushing any money down the toilet.

Romney picks Rice and he can eat shit and die, as far as I’m concerned, even though I will still vote for him over the Kenyan Commie.

"My fear is that Mitt is going to go for the race/gender card and sell out everything to be able to play that."

Yup. Tactical blunder. The campaign will be reduced to defending the Bush years. I respect and admire Rice, but if she's selected, that will be the tripwire comfirming it's all...

Drudge poll has her at 65% yes, 35% no. Surprising.

Bad choice. Not too moderate, too liberal.

Too moderate (a/k/a liberal): absolutely.

Boy let’s just make it REALLY hard to differentiate the different parties. It is bad enough that Romney and Obama share the same beliefs but not throw Rice in the mix and it really won’t matter who wins as they all are the same. Our country is a disaster and it is because of both parties. Vote Virgil Goode.

Most likely a Lesbo (lightly closeted)

I agree with all you said except this. I am not sure that we can or should say this type of thing. FIrst of all I like the fact that she would keep her mouth shut if she is and the last thing I want is rumors going around about her if it isn’t true.

I think the headline is misleading. No one has said that this was the final selection. In fact, most believe this is a head fake.

No thanks.

Fodder for Obama who is still blaming Bush for everything.

With Rice on the GOP ticket, Obama would green-light running against Bush [policies] again. And he would tout his foreign affairs accomplishments — he got Osama bin Laden; she didn’t.

Surely, Team Romney isn’t that stupid.

Are you romney supporters feeling the love yet? Are you happy and giddy and flying high these days? Go read rice's pre 2008 election interviews... read her words carefully and then come back and tell me that she is the best person to represent the GOP and act as backup for the A Team.

At least colon powell admitted that he voted for obama... when you think about it... romney/rice... figures.

No. Condi Rice is a go-along, get-along, politically correct apologist bureaucrat. She has never displayed the fortitude capable of casting a pro-Constitution tie-breaking U.S. Senate vote.

A potential commander-in-chief of the greatest military force in the world, she is not

Her potential Supreme Court selections would be drawn from the only circle she runs with - academic muttin-heads who would view their appointment to the high court as an opportunity to control the masses.

I have no confidence in Mitt Romney, let alone Ms. Rice, as capable of keeping a thumb on the 'new world order' or the hate-America's Constitution commies in the NSA, DOD, DOJ, Homeland Security, FBI, IRS, and both Houses of Congress.

If that political chameleon from the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts doesn't pick a rock solid Constitutional conservative as his VP, he will not get my vote, and I will urge everyone I know to take a pass on the GOP presidential candidates.

So far, he and his neophyte blockhead handlers are doing everything they can to give this election to the pretender-in-chief - which actually may be the 'screw America' FED's game plan.

"She will get the same Media attention as Sarah Palin."

....but not the same 'Main Street' attention Governor Palin got.

Rice wouldn’t be able to dent into the black vote. She brings only a few liberal Republicans still balking that Romney isn’t liberal enough to the table. A really poor choice; not even Laura Bush would favor her selection.

I saw her in a tough interview once, during the Bush years...I think it was on Nightline.

Anyone who saw that interview whould know not to pick her.

She was absolutely terrible.

Now, a rabidly liberal RINO has been redefined as a "moderate"

It's nothing new. Liberal Republicans are always referred to as 'moderate'. While any Democrat who doesn't want to implement full-blown communism while killing all babies with forced-unionized government doctors after getting rid of our military is a 'Conservative Democrat.'
