See #278.

I still don’t see what the big deal is. So the man isn’t perfect. Neither am I. NO politician ever will be. He made a gaffe with an off the cuff statement. Whatever. I’m still voting for him.

Do what I recommend and move on. Winning is goal. Whining about an imperfect candidate is pointless and counterproductive.

If we can’t let the left with Obama and Biden’s moronic gaffes get away with it we shouldn’t either.

Perhaps you can state exactly why what Aiken said is a moronic gaffe, on par with Obama and Biden.

AT BEST, this shows that the guy’s public speaking chops and judgement are badly lacking and he likely will say more moronic things in the future.

I will grant you that he could have stated his point more artfully, and some ways he could have done so have been pointed out earlier in the thread by others, but if that alone is why you think what he said is moronic then it is not on the same level as Obama and Biden because his point was factually correct. It is not the sort of racist or psychotic lunacy as the other two are prone to utter.

Cordially,

I think sometimes that Todd Aiken is a little naive in some of what he says because he has been a Congressman in a pretty safe district for a decade. But he better get up to speed quickly.

He is running for Senator now in a statewide race. More pressure, more interviews etc... He does need to get up to speed. What Dem spoke against Biden this week? What Dem spoke about what is is???? None or very few. We are quick to throw ours overboard as the media and Dems want us to. Akin is a fine man with military experience, an engineer, and a US Representative. We all learn as we go up the ladder and sometimes the lessons are quick and fierce. We must understand the fierceness or our enemy and defend instead of eating our own.

Why do only our Senate candidates say stupid things? Losing a House seat isn’t a big deal....this is.

Can the party force him out?

It's a common error; it did not occur to me that he felt rape was legal. Who would think anyone would legitimately feel that way anyway? Whoops, that would be "actually." :)

Baloney.

Sarah Palin endorsed the most liberal candidate in the Republican primary who was supported by the trial lawyers and the public employees unions.

Sarah Palin has her flaws and failings and her endorsement of Sarah Steelman in this race was one of them that the conservative voters in Missouri saw through.

He should.. whether he will is another story. This is about as classic a case of handing away a sure win as possible .

McCaskill got her campaign $ worth with this clown.

Nate Silver just said he went from being up 6-7 to likely being down 20 points once this goes mainstream and it has already begun. At this point, there’s no way he’s getting elected, what he said was egregious, regardless of how people try to defend it.

The best thing that can happen is that this guy gets completely disowned/exiled by the GOP and his supporters. Cut off the cash, cut off the funding, force him to step down, its not too late for another candidate to step in and take what should be an easy victory over an empty suit like McCaskill, but Akin won’t do it, not with this, and having him on the ballot will result in Republicans nationwide being hounded by questions about rape and pregnancy, changing the discussion from the economy and Medicare to own that essentially benefits Democrat’s.

What he said can’t be defended, it was idiotic in any sense, scientifically, politically, you can be sure that MSNBC and other outlets will be trotting out women who were raped and became pregnant, what an absolute buffoon, how do mouth-breathers like this still wind up getting into these spots?

Totally self-inflected wound, the best chance Republicans have now is for Steelman to step in after Akin steps down and shuts his mouth for the long haul. For those who can’t see why a comment like this plays worse than anything Biden has said, you need to put down the Kool-Aid and realize how this plays politically, another aging, white Republican sounding clueless about a woman’s reproduction that will be endlessly parodied over and over in countless televised skits and cartoons nationwide.

The king of gaffe’s that will be amplified endlessly by the more than eager left-wing media. If this guy doesn’t step down, his comments just helped to re-elect Claire McCaskill. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, what an absolute tool.

I’d love to know what he would consider “un-legitimate” rape.

So dumb, he could have said nothing for the next few months and won by default, instead he creates an instant controversy through some brief idiocy.

He was asked a question. He answered the question. What's wrong with that? Would you rather that he evaded answering the question?

I'd rather see people running for senate to answer questions properly. "It's not the baby's fault" would have been a proper answer. Doctor's say it's rare without using a term like "legitimate" which is bad. He's probably trying to differentiate between statutory and forced.

It's a shame, but I'd say a brain cramp (not to be confused with whatever goes on with Biden). Athletes have them all the time (well maybe not Usain Bolt), so surely politicians do too. Why help the liberals out by jumping on the guy as well? He has apologized, correct?

"It's not the baby's fault" would have been a proper answer.

Guess what! He more or less did. Hype, in this case, seems to rule.

Todd Akin, GOP Senate candidate: ‘Legitimate rape’ rarely causes pregnancy
“But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

How something is written matters. Partial write ups, or "Twitter" write ups, tend to leave important things out and that's usually on purpose.

A "media firestorm", indeed.
Dance, children, dance.
Burn, baby, burn.
