Romney slams striking Chicago teachers
The Washington Times ^ | Sept. 10, 2012 | Ben Wolfgang

Mitt Romney on Monday blasted the Chicago Teachers Union for its decision to “turn its back” on students in the Windy City after the labor group, representing teachers and support staff in the nation’s third-largest public school system, walked off the job for the first time time in 25 years.

“Teachers unions have too often made plain that their interests conflict with those of our children, and today we are seeing one of the clearest examples yet,” said Mr. Romney, the GOP’s presidential nominee.

The two sides are reportedly not far apart in salary negotiations, but other issues — such as changes to health insurance packages and the implementation of evaluation systems that rank teachers partly based on students’ standardized tests scores — are still outstanding. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, formerly President Obama’s chief of staff, said the walkout is “not a strike I wanted.”

“It was a strike of choice … it’s unnecessary, it’s avoidable and it’s wrong,” he said.

Romney should not have commented, IMO. Local issue. And needlessly pits him as the rich plutocrat against the (media fabricated) poor teacher.

Now we are talking! My exact thoughts! I made this one about a year ago.

I don’t see it going that way. Most of the coverage seems to accurately portray the teachers as what they are, (in some ways, to support Rahm). We hear about the children being disenfranchised and that paints the teachers unions as selfish, greedy hacks.... which is exactly what they are.

Some one who was a Republican stated the following (and I have never forgot it but I am sorry I can not name him/her. This was a while back) which is one of the truest/smartest things I have ever heard stated concerning reforming fixing education in this country.

“Before you can fix the schools, you will have to break the teachers unions.”

Teachers unions and the Department of Education thanks alot Jimmah

back in the 70s if I recall, the head of the NYC teachers union said when students start paying union dues, then we’ll start caring about students....

Weigh in. What the hell. My guess is the mom’s will see him as the savior of free babysitting.

Don’t know what his motivation is. Maybe he’s growing a backbone. Could this have been focus-grouped already?

The quote is disputed (naturally!) But it was Al Shanker, president of the United Federation of Teachers, who was quoted as saying: “When schoolchildren start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.”

Rush was just commenting on how ironic that the NEA members are striking over issues regarding health care. How can this be in Chicago, when 0bama is president and Rahm is mayor, and their brainchild, 0bamacare, is the law of the land?

It’s interesting that the unions tell their members to strike over health care issues. And will continue to do so, even when they will have waivers from 0bamacare, and will also have better health care plans than 0bamacare rations to us.

I agree and same with the Todd Akin debachle. Right or wrong, nobody wants Washington prying into their state and local issues.

Romney should not have commented...

Agreed. Too easy to distort it into a Romney is anti-teacher, anti-student, anti-education, and anti-union attack ad.

I don’t see any political advantage in Romney’s comment.

Respectfully disagree. Collective bargaining is a Federal issue. If Romney wins, The choices Romney makes for appointment to the Department of Labor will affect collective bargaining over the next four years. Thus, it’s fair for Romney to give his opinions on the subject.

As to whether it helps him get elected, I have no idea.

Must not speak the truth. No comments about WI either. The public unions must be treated with kid gloves even though they have endorsed Obama and fund him big time. The teacher's union must not be criticized. It is a local problem./s

In the meantime the teachers are hurting the children and Rahm Emanuel says they made the wrong choice. Easy for him to say because he put his three children into a private school this year.

Al Shanker, President of the American Federation of Teachers

“When schoolchildren start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.”

At least he was in touch with reality, unlike so many liberals who think they’re doing it for the children.

In this case it sends some really mixed signals. Chicago's public school teachers work for one of America's worst employers. It is in fact arguable that all the top layers in the various Chicago government institutions are CRIMINALS or barely concealed madmen.

They should not only strike, they should git out the way and go someplace else as quickly as possible.

Now the chillun', what can I say about Chicago's poor chillun'. They may never grow up given the murder rate there.

What a horrid place.

Note: George Bush didn't do that!
